II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

In this lesson, you will have a review of the previous discussions on


argumentative essay, its characteristics, and elements to further deepen your
understanding of the concept and eventually apply what you have learned by writing
your own argumentative essay.

What is an argumentative essay?

An argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to


investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position
on the topic in a concise manner.

The structure of the argumentative essay is held together by the following:

● A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first
paragraph of the essay.
● Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and
conclusion.
● Body paragraphs that include evidential support.
● Evidential support (whether factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal).
● A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis but readdresses it
in light of the evidence provided.

III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Task 1. TRUE OR FALSE?

Carefully read each statement and determine if the sentence is correct or not.
Write TRUE if it is correct, otherwise, write FALSE.

1. Thesis statement is not a part of the introduction of an argumentative essay.


2. Conclusion is the part of an essay that leaves the most immediate impression
on the mind of the reader.
3. In writing a persuasive essay, it is enough that a writer includes only his
opinions.
4. A good argumentative essay writer persuades his readers to understand and
support his point of view by stating reasoning and providing evidence to back
it up.
5. The body restates the thesis and summarizes all the arguments made in the
argumentative essay.
