Future Tenses

USE OF FUTURE SIMPLE
The Future tense is a verb tense used to talk about something that will happen or
will be true in the future, spontaneous decisions, predictions and promises:
He’ll be here soon
I think I’ll have a drink
I promise I will study a lot!
It will be sunny tomorrow.

We can often also use going to with an infinitive to talk about the immediate
future, our future plans or predictions:
He’s going to miss the train.
It’s going to take about half an hour.
I think it's going to rain this weekend.
FUTURE SIMPLE FORM
To form the affirmative, we use the following formula:
[Subject + Will/'ll + Verb]
I don't feel like studying today. I'll do it tomorrow

To form the negative, we use the following formula:


[Subject + Will/'ll + Not + Verb]
That restaurant was awful: I'm sure we won't come back

To form the interrogative, we use the following formula:


[Will/'ll + Subject + Verb + ?]
I'm almost ready. Will you wait for me a moment, please?
EXERCISES
Put the verbs into the correct form (Future Simple).
Jim asked a fortune teller about his future. Here is what she told him:

1. You (earn) will earn a lot of money.

USE OF FUTURE CONTINUOUS
The Future Continuous tense is a verb tense used to talk about an action in
progress at a certain future time

We won't be travelling anytime soon


On next Monday I'll be staying home buried in blankets
Will they be coming next Christmas?

We can also use Future Continuous tense to make predictions about the present:

She will be getting ready for school.


Don’t call them now. They will be having dinner.

Useful expressions: At this time tomorrow, next ..., on Thursday, in the next
decade, in a near future...
FUTURE CONTINUOUS FORM
To form the affirmative, we use the following formula:
[Subject + Will+ be + Verb + ing]
I can't make it next friday: I will be working

To form the negative, we use the following formula:


[Subject + Will + not + be + Verb + ing]
You can be sure she will not be studying

To form the interrogative, we use the following formula:


[Will + Subject + be + Verb + ing + ?]
Will they be coming next Christmas?

USE OF FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE
The Future Continuous tense is a verb tense used to talk about an action
completed by a specific time in the future:

They will have run out of food by then


John will have gone arround the world by October
Will you have eaten by 2 o'clock?

Useful expressions: By this time next week, by 2 o'clock, by the end of..., by
then, by July, in five months...
FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE FORM
To form the affirmative, we use the following formula:
[Subject + Will have+ Verb + ed*] *if irregular, 3rd column
5 o'clock? I will have already eaten by then!

To form the negative, we use the following formula:


[Subject + Will not have + Verb + ed*] *if irregular, 3rd column
I get home at 3. I hope we won't have run out of hot water by then,

To form the interrogative, we use the following formula:


[Will + Subject + have + Verb + ed*+ ?] *if irregular, 3rd column
Will you have finished your swimming lessons by next summer?
