Also hosts visiting exhibitions.

Balestier

Balestier, Newton, Novena and Toa Payoh are in central Singapore. Strung along the North-South
Line just north of Orchard Road, these four rather dissimilar districts serve to absorb Singapore''s
urban sprawl and house its inhabitants. None are particularly attractive from a tourist''s point of view,
but they are popular for short and longer-term stays in Singapore, quiet and reasonably priced, but
close enough to be convenient. Balestier offers one of Singapore''s largest clusters of cheap hotels,
second only to Geylang.

Reach

Botanic Gardens

Botanic Gardens features trees and plants from tropical climates around the world. Walking and
jogging trails are throughout. Outdoor sculptures dot the gardens. Look for the girl on the swing that
appears to hang from an invisible chain in the air. The main entrance is on Bukit Timah Road.

Reach
Bugis and Kampong Glam

Bugis and Kampong Glam are districts of Singapore, just to the east of the city center. Bugis has a
colorful past. Originally named after the bloodthirsty race of pirates who prowled in the Straits before
the arrival of the British, the area where Bugis Junction now stands was the original home of
Singapore's small Hainanese community, famous for their large contribution to Singapore's culinary
culture, before they moved to Beach Road in the early 20th century to make use of the docks and
seafront. Neighboring Kampong Glam, also known by the name of its main thoroughfare Arab Street,
was where Singapore's Arab traders settled in the founding days of the colony. But here too, the
original inhabitants fled in the 1920s as real-estate prices drove through the roof, and today the heart
of Muslim Singapore beats in Geylang Serai on the East Coast.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

At 166 meters this is Singapore"s highest point — if you don"t count the city"s skyscrapers. It is also
one of the last places in Singapore that is home to the original primary tropical rainforest that used to
cover the entire island. You can scale the hill in 15 minutes if you follow the paved road (boring) or 45-
50 minutes if you do it the long way around (more interesting).

Reach

Carlsberg Sky Tower

Asia"s tallest observation tower. It takes you up to a height of 131 m above sealevel and offers a 360-
degree view of Sentosa, Singapore and the Southern islands. On clear days the outlines of Malaysia
and Indonesia can be seen.

Reach

Changi Beach

Changi Beach, near Changi Village, Right next to Changi Airport, you can watch (and hear) the

eventually pass by Bedok Jetty and arrive at East Coast Park

Reach

Changi Chapel and Museum

Singapore's memorial to the notorious WW2 Japanese POW camp, the setting of James Clavell's
King Rat. The current site is a reconstruction and in a different location, but contains a replica of the
original chapel and informative exhibits about the squalid conditions of the prison.

Reach
Chinatown

Singapore's Chinatown evolved around 1821 when the first Chinese arrived from Xiamen, Fujian
province in China. The passengers, all men, set up home around the south of the Singapore River
which is known today as Telok Ayer. Chinatown’s local name - Niu Che Shui (Bullock Cart Water)
arose from the fact each household at that time had to collect fresh water from the wells in Ann Siang
Hill and Spring Street, using bullock-drawn carts. Jamae Mosque Jamae Mosque is one of
Singapore's oldest mosques, built in the 1830s by Tamil Muslims in Indian style. Outside one can find
the stepped minarets. Mariamman Temple Singapore's oldest Hindu temple is an impressive structure
in Chinatown. Dating back to 1827, the brick bones of the present building were built around 1843. A
profusion of deities carved all over its walls, bell-decked doors and frescoes on the ceilings have been
included later. The gopuram or the tower over the entrance of the temple is covered with figu

Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden

Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden, next to Lakeside MRT. Otherwise rather lacklustre, these are
only worth a visit during the Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival, when the garden is lit up with tens of
thousands of lanterns, including complex installations with moving figures based on themes ranging
from Hello Kitty to Chinese folk tales.

Da Bogong Temple

Da Bogong (Tua Pekong) Temple, Kusu Island. An unassuming little Taoist temple dedicated to the

East Coast Park

Basically 20 km of free beach on Singapore"s southeastern coast, very popular on sunny weekends.
The water is on the murky side, but the (imported) white sand, palm trees, and skimpily clad
rollerbladers zooming past on the promenade make up for it. Bicycle and skate rental available

Esplanade Theatres

Singapore's equivalent of Sydney's famous Opera House, except that the two-lobed spiky
Singaporean version deliberately bears a striking resemblance to the durian, a tropical fruit related to
the jackfruit which is notorious for its sharp odour. Opera, dance, classical concerts and similar
entertainment is offered daily.

Reach

Fort Canning Park

The former HQ of the British army during World War 2, now turned into an air-conditioned museum
complete with animatronic figures retelling the events of the days before surrender. Nearest MRT
station Dhoby Ghaut, but it's a steamy hike up the hill.

Reach
Fort Siloso

Formerly the largest British naval base in Fortress Singapore, its guns staring balefully out towards
the sea in preparation for enemy attack. The Japanese rode bikes down the peninsula instead; after
your visit here, be sure to visit the Battle Box at Fort Canning Hill to find out what happened next. Now
turned into a museum, you can follow a tour through the area (complete with lots of wax figures) to
find out what the life of a recruit was like.

Reach

Haw Par Villa

Formerly the Tiger Balm Gardens, this is the former site of the villa of the Tiger Balm brothers, Aw
Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, now packed with an incredibly bizarre assortment of statues illustrating
Chinese legends and moral values. The most famous bit is the Ten Courts of Hell, which demonstrate
in gruesome detail how sinners get punished in the underworld: for example, ingratitude is punished
by grilling on a red hot copper pillar, while cheating in exams merits having your body dismembered
and your intestines pulled out.

Japanese Cemetery Park

The largest Japanese cemetery in Southeast Asia, this is the sole reminder of what was once a
bustling ethnic Japanese community prior to World War II.

Reach

Jurong BirdPark

A 20.2 hectare open-concept park dedicated to, you guessed it, birds in all shapes and sizes. The
Park specialises in birds from Southeast Asia and the more exotic and colorful tropical birds, and its
collection of more than 8,000 birds from 600 species is among the largest in the world. The park is
attractively presented and quite enjoyable even if you aren"t a hardcore ornithologist. To ease the
pain of slogging around in the tropical heat, you can circle the park with the Panorail monorail.

Jurong Island

Jurong Island is a man-made island located to the southwest of the main island of Singapore. It was
formed from the amalgamation of several offshore islands. The seven main islands are Pulau Ayer
Chawan, Pulau Ayer Merbau, Pulau Merlimau, Pulau Pesek, Pulau Pesek Kecil, Pulau Sakra and
Pulau Seraya. This was done through land reclamation. Jurong Island is linked to the main island by a
2.3 km causeway known as the Jurong Island Highway. Jurong birdpark. The Jurong BirdPark has
9,000 colourful birds of 600 species with various shapes and sizes. There is an African-themed exhibit
with African huts and a body of water. It houses endangered birds like the Shoebill, the African
Crowned Crane, the Saddle-Billed Stork and more. There is a bird show, which has the largest
collection of live birds in a show performance.

Kim Choo

Housed in an old Peranakan shophouse, Singaporeans know this shop best for its dumplings (kueh
chang), but they"ve opened up their second story for visitors and also operate a Peranakan restaurant
and gift shop with pottery, beadwork, kebayas and more. While most of what you see comes from
China (as it did even back in the old days), some of their wares are still made in Singapore, and they
conduct regular cooking and arts classes

Pictures  Reach

Koon Seng Road

A section of this short street, between Joo Chiat and Still Rds, has what are probably Singapore"s
prettiest shophouses. Houses on one side of the street are multicolored, while the other has more
soberly decorated shophouses with elaborate flower-themed curlicues.

Labrador Secret Tunnels

It runs on guided tours every hour on the hour. Opened in May 2005, there are two ways of looking at
these two restored British-era bunkers: either they"ve done a pretty good job of making a tunnel
interesting, or even if you dress it up with spot lights and recorded bang sounds, it"s still just a bunch
of tunnels.

Reach
Little India

Little India is, as the name promises, the center for the large Indian community in Singapore. While a
rather sanitized version of the real thing, Little India retains its distinct identity without degenerating
into a mere tourist attraction and is one of the most colorful and attractive places to visit in Singapore.

place in Singapore to exchange any currency you can think of (and many you can't) at competitive
rates.

Night Safari

A part of the Zoo but located on completely separate grounds that are closed during the day, this is
the world"s first wildlife park built to be viewed at night. The grounds are in fact larger than the main
Zoo and only parts are accessible to visitors on foot, so most people opt for the guided tram tour
instead. There is a 30 minute show at the amphitheater with trained animal displays three times per
night. The tram tour is highly recommended unless you have the time to do a lot of walking and it
brings you the eastern part of the park which is not accessible by walking. Lighting throughout the
park is minimal, but sufficient. Stopping at the second tram station is a must as there is a walking path
(The Leopard Trail) for viewing giraffes, flying squirrels, lions and others.

Reach
Omni Theatre

Just beside the Singapore Science Centre. 10 AM-8 PM Tue-Sun. OMNIMAX movies and
Planetarium shows can be viewed on a 23m and 5 storeys high screen, tilted at a 30 degrees angle to

Orchard Road

Orchard Road Orchard Road is named after the nutmeg orchards that used to line it in the 1830s, one

top museums. Orchard road is a shopper's aradise. Battle Box The former HQ of the British army

colorful culture of the Peranakans, the Malay-Chinese and Malay-Indian traders who had a major

food with the latest in audiovisual gear. The building itself, a 1912 pastel blue wedding cake originally
built as a school, is also impressive

Pulau Ubin

Singapore"s flashback to yesteryear, a little island off the northern coast where people still live in
fishing villages on stilts. The island is covered in biking trails and is an excellent spot for a little steamy
jungle offroading; bike rentals go for as low as $3 a day. Access to the island requires a bit of effort
though: take the MRT to Tampines, then ride bus 29 to the bus terminal in Changi Village, find the
jetty and hop on a bumboat ($2 each way) for the 10-minute ride to the island.

Reach

Raffles Statue

This statue of Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, is built on the (supposed) exact spot where
he first landed. Second only to the Merlion as most popular place in Singapore to take a picture of
yourself, and having the skyscrapers and the shophouses of Boat Quay in the background helps to
explain why! The statue here is actually a replica; the original can be found in front of the Victoria
Theater.

Reach
Reflections at Bukit Chandu

Small but well-implemented commemorative museum for the last stand of the Malay Regiment in
World War II"s Battle of Bukit Chandu. Nearest bus stop Pasir Panjang Community Centre, but it"s
still a bit of a hike up the hill from here. If visiting here, make a short detour to the free Canopy Walk
next door, an elevated footpath through the jungle offering nice views of Singapore"s heartlands.

Riverside

The Singapore River forms a central artery in Singapore's densely packed Central Business District.
The north bank of the river is where Raffles originally landed and founded his colony, and to this day
many central government buildings can be found in the area. The newer south bank, laden with
skyscrapers, is where Singapore's bankers make (or break) their fortunes. Between the two are the
bulk of Singapore's nightspots, found along the riverside streets of Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and
Robertson Quay.

Sentosa Luge

Up the hill in a ski lift and down again in a steerable bobsled. Kid safe. Good attraction for younger

inclined to go, resist temptation to purchase multiple trips until trying it the first time.

Reach

Sentosa Merlion

A stretched-out 37-metre version of the statue by the Singapore River, which is lit up at night and

real deals can be found.

Reach

Singapore Flyer

Singapore's newest tourist trap, this 150-meter-tall observation wheel modeled on the London Eye is
no less than the world's tallest. One rotation takes about 30 minutes, and for an extra $22 you can sip

unless you stump up a cool $1,000 for a private ride.

Reach

Singapore Science Centre

Set up to promote interest and learning in science and tecnhology through assortment of exhibits.
There are more than 850 exhibits in the various exhibition galleries and it is not possible to view all
exhibits in one visit. There is also an interesting outdoor display where children can spend their time.

Singapore Zoo

One of the best zoos in Asia, if not the world — it was endorsed by the late Steve Irwin and Animal
Planet uses it for some of its documentaries. The animals are kept in spacious, landscaped
enclosures, separated from the visitors by dry or wet moats. To spare yourself walking under the hot
tropical sun, you can board a little train that trundles through the park, but it"s still best to get there
early. Kids will love the Jungle Breakfast daily at 9 AM, where you"re joined at a buffet breakfast by a
host of critters from orangutans to otters and you can even try feeding the elephants; very popular, so
book ahead.
