“No one is bigger than the team. You’re going to be on time, you’re
going play hard, you’re going to know your job and you’re going to
know when to pass and shoot. If you can’t do those four things you’re
not getting time here and we don’t care who you are.”

Always have a plan and honor your practice schedule. If you want maximum effort,
01 stay true to your time frames. Players get lazy when they don’t know when a drill
will end. Stick to your word. If you say “we’re doing this drill for 5 minutes” end it
in exactly 5 minutes.
02
Make it a team rule that when players walk in the gym, they must say hello. Use
this opportunity to read their eyes and determine if they are facing some kind of
emotional turbulence you’re not aware of (school, family, relationship etc.)
03
Incorporate an athletic development program into your in-season schedule.
Include exercises for strength, agility and speed. Have your players work out twice
a week, preferably on days without practice or games.
Before practice, form a circle and tell the players what you are going to work on
04 that day and what you expect out of them. After the circle, line players up and
talk about why you won or lost the previous game. Walk through certain plays and
explain why the execution was good or was not good.
05
When teaching a new play, concept or drill, align the players in an “L” in a baseline
corner so they all can easily see.
06
Scale down practices as the season progresses. For example, you may do 2 hour
practices to start, then on Jan. 1st you scale back to 1.5 hours, then on March 1st
you go to 1 hour. This will help keep legs fresh for the playoffs and avoid burnout.
