DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN EARTH SCIENCE

I. Objective
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 Illustrate how rocks are formed
 Identify and classify the types of rocks

II. Content
Topic: Rock Cycle

and Extrusive Igneous Rock Types

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Routinary Activities

a. Prayer
b. Checking of Attendance

2. Review
Teacher shows a picture of “different
rocks” and ask students to define a rock
based on the previous lesson. Teachers
also confirm the answers and give them
the correct definition. Rocks
- is a relatively common aggregate of mineral
Rocks grains.

Teacher asks the students to pick and

observe the different rock sample Students pick up a rock samples provided by the
provided. teacher.

B. Developmental Activities
Few students are called and shares their
1. Activity
observation towards the rock.
Teacher asks students:
a. What do they’ve observe about
the color and texture of rock?
Teacher compliments the students who
participated.

2. Analysis
Teacher explains that due to the rock cycle
process the color and texture of a rock can
help to determine/classify of what type of
rock does it belong.

3. Abstraction
Teacher explains that today, she will help
the class understand more about rock cycle
and its classification.

Teacher introduces the new lesson:

Rock Cycle
In this lesson we will know how rocks are
formed and their classification.
Student reads slide #1:
Let’s first discuss the rock cycle and

-is a cycle is a concept used to explain how the
three basic rock types are formed and how Earth
processes, over geologic time, change a rock from
one type to another.
Teacher shows slide #1 and ask a student
to read it.

Teacher compliments the student.

illustration.
3 Classifications of Rocks
1. Igneous Rocks
-are rocks that have undergone cooling and
solidification from a molten condition. These have
a coarser texture, composed of masses of larger
crystalline grains of varying sizes. There are two
kinds of igneous rock:
Teacher then shows slide #2 and asks a  Intrusive Igneous Rocks
student to read it. - crystallizes below Earth’s surface, and the
slow cooling that occurs there allows large
crystals to form.

 Extrusive Igneous Rocks

- erupt onto the surface, where they cool
quickly to form small crystals.

Teacher compliments the student.

Student reads slide #3:

Rock. - are rocks that are formed by the accumulation
of sediments. There are 3 kinds of sedimentary
rocks:
 Clastic Sedimentary Rocks
- are form from the accumulation and
lithification of mechanical weathering debris.
 Chemical Sedimentary Rocks
- it is form when dissolved materials
precipitate from solution.
 Organic Sedimentary Rocks
- form from the accumulation of plant or
animal debris.

Teacher then shows slide #3 and asks a

student to read it.
Teacher compliments the student.

Student reads slide #4:

3. Metamorphic Rock
- rocks that are modified by heat, pressure, and
chemical processes, usually while buried deep
below Earth’s surface. There are 3 kinds of
metamorphic rocks:
 Foliated Metamorphic Rocks
- it is layered or banded appearance that is
produced by exposure to heat and directed
pressure.
 Non-foliated Metamorphic Rocks
- do not have a layered or banded appearance.

Teacher then shows slide #4 and asks a

student to read it.
Teacher compliments the student.

The teacher compliments the class for their

participation.

4. Application
The teacher invites students to give their
insights about the importance of rock cycle to
human daily lives in real life scenario.
5. Concluding Activity
Teacher and students illustrates together
the rock cycles and its classification.

IV. Evaluation

Teacher announces a quiz and instructs students to prepare ½ crosswise of intermediate pad.

Teacher shows slide #5. Then warns the students not to copy answers to their seatmates.
Answered papers will be pass after 15 minutes.

Slide #5:

Direction: In a ½ crosswise, illustrate the rock cycle by drawing a diagram.

V. Agreement

Teacher tasks the students to have an advance study on Rock Minerals.
