Priesthood in the Old Testament

The priest was a go-between or an

intercessor between man and God. Such
a person was necessary because of the
Holiness of God.
Priesthood in the Old Testament

Holiness means God is totally

separate from fallen man and, in a real
sense, unapproachable.
Priesthood in the Old Testament

For this reason, God ordained that

certain men who were ritually cleansed
in a special way should approach him on
behalf of the people.

THREE POINTS TO
REMEMBER: 1. Priest give sacrifice to God and

These points are (5:1).
briefly stated in 2. Priests must be cleansed in a
Hebrews. special ritual way (5:3).
3. Priests are chosen for the office
by God (5:4)
MELCHIZEDEK

With the first rays of Divine Revelation appeared

the mysterious and venerable personage of
Melchisedech (see Gn 14:18), priest and king whom
the author of the Letter to the Hebrews sees as a
prefiguring of Jesus Christ (see Heb 5:10; 6:20; 7:1-
11, 15).
MELCHIZEDEK

It is interesting to notice that the name Melchizedek

comes from one Semitic root which means "king,"
and another, which means righteousness. His name
literally means King of Righteousness (Heb. 7:2).
Also, He was the King of Salem. Salem is the word
from which comes "Shalom" or peace. Therefore
here is also the "King of Peace" (Heb. 7:2).
All these prefigurements of the priesthood in the Old
Testament find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, "the Only
Mediator between God and mankind" (1 Tm 2:5) The very fact
that the Old Testament priesthood prefigures that of the New and
Eternal Covenant confers upon it its majesty and glory.
Saint Paul illustriously summarizes the dignity and the
functions of the Christian ministerial priesthood with the
following phrase: "People must think of us as Christ's
servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God"
How did Jesus carry out his priestly ministry?
1. Priesthood of Aaron and Christ Contrasted.
In this epistle significant contrasts are made between the priesthood of
Aaron and the priesthood of Christ.
2. Christ is Man's Only Mediator. As the perfect High Priest, who has made a
perfect propitiation for the sins of His people, Christ is now at God's right hand,
applying to our lives the benefits of His perfect atoning sacrifice.

3. The Conflict in the Garden. It is our belief that in the Garden of

Gethsemane He really accepted our place, and became deeply conscious in a
special sense of the burden of the world's sin.
4. Christ Both Priest and Sacrifice. Here in the Garden, and later on the
cross, He was both offerer and offering; both priest and victim.

5. Ancient Sanctuary Service an Object Lesson. While Adventists believe

that the Mosaic tabernacle, or sanctuary, with its sacrificial services, as a type,
was to meet its fulfillment in the perfect offering and priestly ministry of our
Lord, yet we also recognize that important lessons can be learned from the
study of the tabernacle and its services.
6. Absolute Redemption by the Victory of Christ
This becomes all the more meaningful when we realize
that Jesus our surety entered the "holy places," and
appeared in the presence of God for us.
7. Jesus Becomes Our "Surety" (Christ became our
surety (Heb. 7:22),He not only bore our sins and carried
our sorrows on Calvary, but from the throne of grace
dispenses He blessed and intercedes on our behalf.

8.The Perfecting of Our Characters

Perfection is God's aim for His people.

Start of ministry of Jesus.
