Activity 3: The Job Interview

Now that you know the main elements of a bio-data and application letter, it is time to discuss and practice
being interviewed.

We will start with a fun quiz to see how much you already know about interview techniques. This is
not a test. Just give quick responses by putting after good interview behavior and  after bad
interview behavior.

Interview Behavior or 
a. If you do not like a question at an interview, you should act as if you did not hear
the question. 
b. You should prepare to aggressively defend your thoughts and show some arrogance
so that your leadership stands out.
c. If you cannot answer a question, it is better to give a vague answer than admitting
that you do not know. 
d. If you are nervous at an interview, it is helpful to look away from the interviewer as
much as you can.
e. Keep your mobile phone on vibration mode during the interview. Occasional
vibrating sounds show that you are busy and active.
f. If you stop by a possible place of employment to ask if they have job openings, you
should behave as you would in an interview.

Let’s Reflect
a. What was it like approaching the employer to obtain the informational interview? Were you
nervous? Confident? What was the reaction of the employer?

It felt as if you were conversing with a stranger when approaching the employer for the interview. Yes, I'm a
touch self-assured and I am confident on my answers on the interview. I believe he is as nervous as I am.

b. What are some highlights that you learned during your interview?
Employers are seeking for applicants that are upbeat and have a can-do attitude. Attitudes are
contagious and have a direct impact on business morale. Allow your optimist side to peek through during
the interview process. These are the key points I learned during the interview.

c. How did this person get started in his/her career? What roles did he/she have which led to his/her
current position?

First and foremost, you must have a goal and hope. He/She might be in any condition, rich or poor, and
he/she solely cares about his /her education, future, and profession. Your thinking must be calm and
clear. Make a detailed strategy for your academics and future. Choose a topic that interests you.

d. What do they value in an employee? What behaviors lead to success?

Their hard labor or efforts, as well as their personality or characteristics. Employer’s reward industrious
employees because they boost the productivity of the firm or institution with which they work. Employers
often pay attention to their employees' personalities because they want a disciplined employee who will
obey their commands. These are the necessary behaviors for success; we must work smarter and have a
positive personality to attract optimism and advancement.

e. Based on what you learned, are you interested in this type of career? Why or why not?

The recruiting manager is interested in learning about your career objectives and how this position fits
into them. Make certain that you are genuinely interested in the position and that you will be driven to
perform if hired. Find out what you know about the firm, industry, and job by doing some research. I
feel I have the expertise to thrive in this job and at the organization since I am ready to step outside of my
comfort zone to discover and experience new things.

Session 2: Appropriate Workplace Behaviors

& Attitudes

 4.11: Workplace Behavior Scenarios

Scenario A

Grace has been working at Alnor Hotel for 4 months as a receptionist. She greets guests and answers any
questions about the hotel. Grace lives a bit far from the office, so it takes her one hour to get to work. Her
supervisor noticed that over the last month Grace has been arriving half an hour late and is often on the
phone quarreling with her aunt. The supervisor has given Grace two warnings now.

One day, Grace arrives 20 minutes late due to traffic. When she arrives, she sees her supervisor helping a
customer. Once the customer departs, the supervisor informs Grace that she will no longer need Grace to
work for her. She needs someone who can be on time and responsive to customer needs.
Reflection Points
What happened in the scenario and why?
Grace got fired in the scenario because she was late for work.

What behaviors led Grace to losing her job?

Initially, I thought it was a bad decision to terminate an employee for being late. However, it is possible
that this is the best option because it will be difficult to be absent from work for such a short length of
time.

Do you think the supervisor made the right decision to fire Grace? Why or why not?
I believe it is critical to keep work and family apart since they may conflict.

Is it important to keep work and family life separate? How does one do this?
I believe she should avoid being late for work by not worrying herself the day before, and by getting up
early and sleeping soundly. As stated in the article, she must travel one hour to her workplace, which may
be due to her failure to sleep early, as previously stated.

What could have Grace done differently so that she would not have lost her job?

Grace's actions led to her dismissal since she was late again and again. I believe she was stressed because
she was arguing with her aunt on the phone, which is why she was late.
