    John the Baptist was a man sent from God to be a witness. He had a godly character and stood in the gap for others. His name, given by God, announced his character. As a man sent from God, his highest calling was to please God by fulfilling the mission and message God had for him. His mission was to witness and his message was to believe in Jesus Christ as the light. This would bring others into relationship with God and give John something meaningful to say through the word of reconciliation.
