CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings and conclusions derived in the conduct of

the study which is to probe on the effects academic performance of BSCT students in

flexible learning. It also provides recommendations that can be pursued for the

improvement of the present study.

SUMMARY

The study entitled, The Academic Performance of BSCT Students of Bicol

University through Flexible Learning, this was initiated by the researchers to

know the academic performance of BSCT students in flexible learning, and the

challenges encounter that affect in their performance. Specifically it answered the

following questions: First, What is the profile of the students of BS Civil

Technology of Bicol University in terms of: gender; type of learner based on the

accessibility instructional material; availability of gadgets. Second, What is the

performance of the respondents: before the flexible learning (pre-pandemic); with

the flexible learning (during pandemic).Third, What is the relationship between

the profile and the performance of the respondents through flexible learning.

Fourth, What are the challenges encountered by the CT students by flexible

learning and lastly, What are the intervention may be proposed to enhance the

performance of the Civil Technology students to cope with the challenges of

flexible learning?. The respondents of this study are BSCT 3 rd year and BSCT 4th

year. The study utilized the descriptive method of research using checklist

questionnaire as the instrument in the data gathering. The data taken from the
survey through online and present in tabulated and interpreted statistically using

frequency count, weighted mean and percentage formula.

FINDINGS

1. What is the profile of the students of BS Civil Technology of Bicol

University in terms of:

a. Gender,

b. Type of learner based on the accessibility instructional material,

c. Availability of gadgets?

1. The researcher study has the following findings in terms of gender, there

are more numbers of male respondents than female respondents. There are

more 48 or 72.7% male respondents with only 18 or 27.3% female

respondents. In the type of learner based on the accessibility instructional

material the respondents answer that most of them are use there are 37 or %

asynchronous learner, 29 or % synchronous learner and none of the

respondents were used modular in their study. On the other hand in

availability of gadgets the data showed that 58 respondents used mobile

phone, 5 respondents used laptop, 4 respondents used desktop, and none

used tablet.

2. What is the performance of the respondents:

a. before the flexible learning(pre-pandemic)

b. with the flexible learning(during pandemic)

2. The researcher find out on the data gathered which is that 3 rd year students

have got high average in flexible learning than face to face learning. The total average

is 1.927 in face to face and 1.826 in flexible learning. This means that the 3 rd year

students are able to adjust in this kind aspect also it improves their academic

performance in flexible learning. On the other hand the 4 th year is got high average in

face to face than the flexible learning. The total average is 1.807 face to face and 1.850

in flexible learning. There was a change in the 2 total average of the 4 th year students,

when in flexible learning 4th year students are reduced and showed that the

respondent’s affects also have changes in their academic performance in flexible

learning with positive and negative impact to the respondents. This also revealed

3.) What is the relationship between the profile and the performance of the respondents

through flexible learning?

Based on the data gathered in the academic performance of BSCT students in flexible

learning, it showed that the male is more 48 or 72.7% percentage higher that the female

with only 18 or 27.3% percentage, means that the male is higher chance to have a

better grades between on them. Therefore the researchers find this that the most

excellent in performance is male in flexible learning, which is based on their GWA and

performance rating that gathered. On the other in the face to face it showed that the

female is more excellent performance than the male, with % for male and female % .

4.) What are the challenges encountered by the CT students by flexible learning?

4. Based on the data gathered by the authors, the usual challenges that most of

students encountered in flexible learning are; poor internet connectivity, power

interruptions, insufficient mobile data load funds, poor time management and family

obligations. While some others said that experiencing side hustles on allowances, doing

modules of their younger siblings and experiencing stress and anxiety are the problems

that they encountered by flexible learning.

5.) What are the interventions may be proposed to enhance the performance of

the Civil Technology students to cope with the challenges of flexible learning?

5. The respondents have given various suggestions of ways on how to cope with

the challenges they experienced in flexible learning. These are the following; improve

internet connection, request financial assistance from LGU’s and NGO’s, schedule

tasks and deadlines, allot more time to study lesson where struggle, attend webinars

and trainings, avoid depending too much on others, focus on the study, learn how to

prioritize, and having an understandable and good professors in all aspects. These

ways are what they seem that can help them enhance their performance in a flexible

class and/or learning.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the indicated findings, as to profile students in terms of:

In terms of profile, the BSCT student respondents are mostly are males and only
few women. In terms of type learner of the respondents, and as revealed in the findings,
BSCT 3rd year and 4th year there are 29 synchronous learners, 37 asynchronous and
none student are in modular. The BSCT respondents generally used mobile phone in
the flexible learning. This showed that the BSCT students are more appropriate of using
mobile phones in the flexible learning.
In terms of the performance of BSCT students in the pre pandemic and during
the pandemic,
RECOMMENDATIONS

This study revealed the academic performance of BSCT students in Bicol University

through flexible learning. Thus, the following recommendations are hereby presentend:

1. Maintain the quality instructions of all subjects for BSCT program.

2. The researcher recommend for the students that should be more maximize the

use of online learning’s and develop their motivation in self study since they are the

college students that need more time and effort initiatively.

3. The professor must try others strategies for the students different learning

styles, in order for them to know if it effective or not base on the learning outcome of the

student and also deal with the emotional, physical and mental health of the students.

4. The researcher recommends that the school must provide or consider to helps

by given any kind assistance to those students that in needs and lack of resources. Find

and maintain relevant methods for the skills learning of the students.

5. Based on the findings in this research, there are some recommendations for

the future researchers. Related to the topic of this research, there are still many topics

which can be developed and analyzed. Although this thesis was still far from perfect, it

can be the basis sources for the next researcher.
