SCIENCE (CODE 086)

Time: 2 Hours Max. Marks: 40

General Instructions:
1. All questions are compulsory.
2. The question paper has three sections and 15 questions. All questions are compulsory.
3. Section–A has 7 questions of 2 marks each; Section–B has 6 questions of 3 marks each; and
Section–C has 2 case based questions of 4 marks each.
4. Internal choices have been provided in some questions. A student has to attempt only one of
the alternatives in such questions.

Section A

1. Account for the following :

(a) Although hydrogen resembles halogens in properties yet it is placed in group 1 of the
Periodic Table.
(b) Elements of group 18 are called zerovalent.

2. (a) Name an element you would expect to show chemical reactions similar to sodium. State
the reason in support of your answer.
(b) Write electronic configuration of the element belonging to 3rd period and 13th group of
the Periodic Table. Predict whether it is a metal or a non-metal. Give reason.

3. Name those parts of a flower which serve the same function as the following do in the animal :
(i) Testis
(ii) Ovary

4. What are sexually transmitted diseases? Name few of them.

5. How do organisms, whether reproduced asexually or sexually maintain a constant chromosome

number through several generations ? Explain with the help of suitable example.
o
Write one main difference between asexual and sexual mode of reproduction. Which species is
likely to have comparatively better chances of survival—the one reproducing asexually or the
one reproducing sexually? Give reasons to justify your answer.

6. Compare the pattern of the magnetic field around a solenoid with the magnetic field around a
bar magnet.
o
A magnetic compass needle is placed in the plane of paper near point A as shown in the
figure. In which plane should a straight current carrying conductor be placed so that it passes
through A and there is no change in the deflection of the compass? Under what condition is the
deflection maximum and why ?

7. Define trophic levels ?

 o
What are the first order consumers ?

Section B

8. The position of three elements, A, B, and C in the periodic table are shown below:
Group 13 Group 15
.......... ..........
.......... A
.......... ..........
B C
(a) State whether C is a metal or non-metal. Name it.
(b) State whether A is a metal or non-metal. Name it.

9. (a) How and why does the size of an atom vary on moving from left to right in a period ?
(b) Why does the chemical reactivity of metals increase on moving down a group ?
 o
The elements of the second period along with their atomic numbers in parentheses are given
below:
B (5), Be (4), O (8), N (7), Li (3), C (6), F (9)
(a) Arrange them in the same order as they are in the Periodic Table.
(b) Which element has the (i) largest (ii) smallest atom ?

10. (a) Draw a flow chart to determine the characteristics of the progeny of a cross between tall
pea plants with short pea plants showing :
(i) F1 Generation
(ii) F2 Generation
(b) List the dominant and recessive characters.

11. Express joules law of heating mathematically. What is the resistance of 12 m wire having radius
2 # 10-4 m specific resistivity 3.14 # 10−8 Ωm ?

12. Suppose a 6 volt battery is connected across a lamp whose resistance is 20 ohm through a
variable resistor as shown in the given Fig. If the current in the circuit is 0.25 A, find out the
resistance.

o
A piece of wire of resistance 20 Ω is drawn out so that its length is increased to twice its original
length. Calculate the resistance of the wire in the new situation.

13. Define an ecosystem. Draw a block diagram to show the flow of energy in an ecosystem.

Section C
This section has 02 case-based questions (14 and 15). Each case is followed by 03 sub-questions
(a, b and c). Parts a and b are compulsory. However, an internal choice has been provided in
part c.

14. Answer given questions on the basis of your understanding of the following paragraph and the
related studies concepts.
A scientist removed some cells from the growing point of a plant and placed it in a suitable
medium leading to the formation of a shapeless lump of mass X . X is then transferred to
another medium which stimulates it to develop roots. When X with developed roots is placed
in a yet another medium, then it developed shoots to form tiny plantlets. These plantlets can
then be transplanted in pots or soil where they can grow to form mature plants.
(i) What is the shapeless lump of mass X known as?
(ii) What name is given to this method of producing new plants?

Name this jelly.
(iv) What is the general name of chemicals used to stimulate the growth of plant cells and
development of roots and shoots?

15. Two coils C1 and C2 are wrapped around a non-conducting cylinder: Coil C1 is connected to a
battery and key and C2 with galvanometer G . On pressing the key (K ), current starts flowing
in the coil C1 . State your observation in the galvanometer :

(i) When key K is pressed on ?

(ii) When the current is passed continuously through coil C1 ?
(iii) When current in the coil C1 is switched off ?
 o
Name and state the phenomenon responsible for the above observation.
