Strategic Plans for Improving University Students’


Motivation

PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT: UNIT 8

In my opinion, motivation is very important in the learning process for every


individual because learning is influenced by feelings of encouragement, serenity of
the environment, desires, or aspiration to be fulfilled in life. To learn faster and
increase in knowledge irrespective of any area of specializations in the changing
world, students will require several motivational factors that will encourage their
interest in studying, reading, research, trainings and gathering experience as well
as positive exposures in schools. Arguably, the time dedicated into this learning
process is very important in every stage of human development and growth, and its
tremendous impact can never be over emphasized, thereby creating an exceptional
and distinctive qualities, skills, and talents to actualize their goal in any facet of
life. Motivation allows students to be focused, encouraged and perform their
respective homework (Silver,2020)

As a management consultant in an educational sector in the western African


country, who is interested in improving the internal operations within the
university as well as specialized in engagement and productivity, I will write to the
best of my ability the necessary motivational factors that will enhance students’
performance as well as strategies to help them reach their goal completion in the
western African university.

However, as motivation being the state to maintain students’ attention and


behaviors as well as provides them more energy that is needed to lead tasks to
completion, it’s effects and efficient on students’ performance and results can
never be over emphasized. The following factors therefore should be considered to
motivate students towards their degree completion.

1. Learning Environment: Academic environment or school climate explains


different norms and regulations that determines the operational activities of
the school. As a motivating factor, the school environment has to be safe,
free from distractions, and also meets students’ basic needs such as the
availability of socio amenities, cafeteria to feed, library, workshops for
Engineering students, hostels to accommodate students, sport centers and
laboratories for different research works etc. It must also be an optimal
environment to build healthy and social relationship within their peers.

2. Guidance and Counselling unit: The university should also encourage a unit
specifically set aside for guidance and counselling of students. This can help
students relate with not only instructors but also counsellors on what is
really affecting their personal lives, health or family issues that may cause
instability in their academic. This will serve as additional supports to help
student deal with their issues by the schools.

3. Teaching methods and university curriculum: The teaching style of the


instructor should be very impactful, practical, and real time experiences. The
instructors should be encouraged to use different teaching methods that will
creates diversity and prevent students from being bored. Real life experience
on Enron scandal, Tyco’s International scandal, Volkswagen emitting
scandal and British petroleum explosion that caused loss of lives, damaged
to the marine life and several other properties are good experience to learn
from.
4. Instructor Behavior and Personality: Students in the tertiary institution can
also be motivated when the instructor is gracious and kind. This has to do
with the timely delivery of information, grades consideration, review of
students’ assessment work and providing a constructively criticism in
feedbacks. The university should allow instructors and lecturers to be trained
in different skills on leadership, empathy management, communications, and
people’s managements. Etc. This can be easily noted when students
communicate to one another about instructor’s characters during of a
particular course.

5. University Integrity and supports for the Alumna: The university integrity
and code of conduct should be strictly adhered to, and building the Alumna
network to supports undergraduates and graduating students should also be
encouraged. This could be achieved through provision of networks for job
placement, sponsors for scholarship and investors to support research and
development in the school projects. Information like this will encourage
students to be focused academically, having in mind that there’s supports to
actualize their dream in life.

In conclusion, I strongly believed that education brings enlightenment to


every individual that crave towards it, and motivational factors needed to
enhance students to reach their degree completion should be constantly
reviewed as the world changes. Think of the achievement in the late
sixteenth century compared to the twenty-first century, the technological
advancement in Internet of a Thing (IIOT) , the improvement in food
production through genetically modified organisms, increase knowledge in
management, Operations and supply-chain management, the concept of
Corporate social responsibility, ESG , green energy and environmental
sustainability etc. We all need motivation to achieve our individual goal in
life.
