• Bachelor's degree in Architecture, 1st class 2nd


(1964).
Master's degree in Town and Regional Planning ,
1st class 1st (1966) from B.E. College under
Calcutta University.
• He is an architect whose 'designs for the future'
are inspired by the brilliance of the timeless,
vernacular architecture of the past. Having
started his journey with small interior projects,
that nevertheless had the Dulal Mukherjee
hallmark, he moved on to architectural projects
of varied dimensions, including landscape and
urban design.
PHILOSOPHY
• Dulal Mukherjee grew up amidst the lush green rural settings
of the Dooars in North Bengal which infused in him a deep
sense of reverence and inspiration from the unconquerable
majesty of nature. An artist, at heart, his dream was to pursue
a career in art or art related disciplines.
• His intrinsic sense of aesthetics and balance, individualistic
philosophy helped him to excel in architecture.
• Greatly inspired by the powers of nature, his design have
always striven to be embellishments in the wide canvas of the
Earth's natural beauty. The multi-hued range of his designs
include housing, office and commercial complexes,
institutions, interior works, resorts and restoration and reuse
projects. Landscape designing is a niche area which he has
delved deeply in his various projects.

Tollygunge Club, Kolkata
ABOUT TOLLYGUNGE CLUB
• The Tollygunge Club, Kolkata, is the only Country Club of
its kind in India and ranked amongst the top 20 Clubs of
the world. It is spread over a hundred acres with a Club
House that is over 220 years old.
• Tollygunge Club, the oldest and most unique country club
of India, spreading over 100 acres of land, with one of the
rarest collections of Flora & Fauna, started its journey
in 1895. But for the club house, the nucleus of Tollygunge
Club, the journey started much before, when Mr. Johnson,
a British businessman brought a Garden house amidst the
vast Greenland of Russapagla, far from the turmoil of
Calcutta.
• In the course of time, Russapagla transformed into
Tollygunge and the club house has also undergone many
additions & alterations according to the changing needs of
its owner. This heritage structure, which bears the brunt
of 230 years of history, needs some care and attention.
The objective of this project is to restore the lost glory &
to modernize it as much as possible.
VICTORIA MEMORIAL HALL,
KOLKATA
• Dulal Mukherjee & Associates was asked to develop a
modernization master plan for the Victoria Memorial Hall,
Kolkata. The grand edifice was a brainchild of the then
Governor General of India, Lord Curzon and was built in
homage to the memory of Queen Empress Victoria. It was
also intended to be a museum mainly exhibiting Royal
Memorabilia. Today, with a collection of over 27,000
artifacts, Victoria Memorial Hall is a complete museum with
numerous galleries showing different aspects of history and
culture.
• Apart from its importance as a museum, the edifice is one of
the finest examples of late colonial architecture in India and
is a landmark synonymous to the city of Kolkata.
• The edifice attracts millions of visitors not only for its
collections but simply for its architectural magnificence and
enjoyment of its beautifully laid out grounds.
• The edifice along with its precinct requires a complete re-
organisation and modernization to sustain the pressures of
its ever increasing footfall and function as an `Edutainment
Center' where education and entertainment are entwined
sensitively for the benefit of the educated society.To
accommodate the growing requirements of a museum, the
Kolkata Tercentenary Trust has decided modernize the
existing galleries.
• AIM OF MODERNISATION
• Modernising the display systems , the illumination,
climate control, security surveillance, the storage
systems, the archives and the laboratories in tune with
international best practices.
• Rationalising and optimizing the space within the
monument to provide for an enhanced educative
experience for visitors and improved working
environment for facilities services providers.
• Projecting the museum building as a repository of
unique artefacts as well as an architectural marvel by
incorporating and highlighting spaces previously closed
to visitors.
• Re-patterning the flow of visitor traffic within the
museum to follow a chronological sequence of Indian
history covering imperialism, nationalism, and the
postcolonial era.
• Branding, promotion , and sale of merchandise through
creation of a state-of-the-art museum shop.
Park Mansions, Kolkata
• Located on Park Street, Park Mansions is a building of heritage and
commercial prominence which was degenerating with age and
negligence.
• Its revitalization was an attempt to bring back the antiquated
Colonial grandeur and also introduce an additional mass within the
inside courtyard as a new attraction. Inaccessibility in almost half
of the spaces within the building due to tenant occupation resulted
in a challenging restoration job.
• RESTORATION & REJUVENATION OF PARK MANSION
• Park Mansions, developed by Armenian jute merchant
T.M.Thaddeus in 1910 at the intersection of Park Street and Free
School Street is getting a major makeover.
• The Rs.45 crore project undertaken by the Apeejay Surrendra
Group include reversing the ageing effect of the building,
correcting the stress imbalance caused by a fire in the early 1990s.
Creating a two level parking facility in the central courtyard and a
steel and glass destination zone above the parking lot

• Dulal Mukherjee & Associates is currently engaged in


reversing the ageing process and reinforcing the
sections devastated by fire. Escalators and overhead
water distribution system will be modernized, the
drive and lighting arrangements will be upgraded.

Chandravarkar and Thacker

• The first architectural firm in Bangalore, founded in 1947 by Narayan
Chandavarkar, Chandavarkar and Thacker is currently under the directorship of
Prem Chandavarkar and Sai Shankar Bharatan. Prem Chandavarkar has also given
the firm a new intellectual edge by confronting Bangalore's new urbanity, and as
such is a role model for many younger‐generation architects. The practice's
current work represents thoughtful and reflective responses as architecture finds
itself at a critical juncture in this city of a euphoric present.With the practice's
60‐year history.
• Chandavarkar and Thacker speak of an ‘aesthetics of absorption’ and a
‘negotiated practice’, both of which should inform a much needed criticality of
the exuberant conditions today. ‘A building does not convey meaning as much as
it slowly absorbs it,’ declares the practice, and so the test of a building is not the
initial impression of its spectacular presentation.

NITESH CENTRAL PARK, BANGALORE

The idea here was to introduce a sense of relation with the


ground by introducing green spaces adjacent to the living
spaces. An open space like a verahdah which becomes a
common space for interaction is also introduced adjoining
the landscape region. Contrasting materials were
introduced to segregate public-private zones. The heavy
opaque inner skin in the inside divides the lobby and living
spaces within the units. It defines the directionality and
the scaling of the surfaces. Whereas the light transparent
glass in the outer skin gives the openness to the exterior
and acts as the source of light.

The site for a local commercial center was to
form the first series of projects that heralded
the entry of a prominent builder into that
neighborhood. Given this and the context of a
triangular site at the junction of major roads,
the architectural proposal for a new mixed use
tower consolidates the design program into an
iconic configuration. The triangular podium
houses retail and restaurant spaces, connected
to public plazas along street edge, forming a
complete Pedestrian Plaza. The upper office
tower is divided into segments that twist as
they rise, creating an iconic and dramatic
addition to the neighborhood skyline.
