1.1 SCOPE This Standard sets out a method to measure the leakage of cold and warm

ew
smoke from one side of a door assembly to the other under the specified test conditions.
The test can be applied to door and shutter assemblies of different types intended for
purposes of controlling the passage of smoke in case of fire and of providing fire
resistance.
sN
1.2 APPLICATION This Standard applies to situations where there is a need to
quantify the smoke leakage passing through a wall opening that is protected by a door or
shutter assembly.
rd

1.3 OBJECTIVES The objective of this Standard is to provide a method of test for
da

determining the smoke leakage through doors and shutters.

1.5.1 Door and shutter assembly — an assembly comprising a fixed part (the door
frame), one or more movable parts (the door leaves) and its hardware. The purpose of the
yr

door assembly is to allow or prevent access of persons or goods. The term hardware
includes such items as hinges, latches, door handles, locks, keyholes (excluding keys),
letter plates, sliding gear, closing devices, electrical wiring and any other items that may
p

influence the performance of the assembly being tested.

Co

1.5.2 Smoke control door — a smoke control door is a door assembly that has the
additional function of restricting the passage of smoke, when in a closed position, to
prescribed limits.
1.5.3 Ambient temperature — an air temperature of 25 ±15°C.
1.5.4 Medium temperature — an average air temperature of 200 ±20°C.
1.5.5 Leakage rate — the rate of air flow, in cubic metres per hour, under specified
pressure differential across a closed door corrected to normal temperature and pressure
conditions (20°C, 101,325 Pa).

COPYRIGHT
5 AS/NZS 1530.7:1998

1.5.6 Pressure difference — the static pressure difference between the test chamber and
the atmosphere outside the specimen. It is written as ∆Pm and expressed in pascals
(1 Pa = 1 N/m2).

*
1.5.7 Test specimen — a door or shutter assembly on which leakage measurements are to

d
be made. It includes all the components necessary for the use of the door when installed
in a building, the seal between the frame and the wall and any associated construction that

n
may be provided.

ala
1.5.8 Associated construction—a specific form of construction in which the test
specimen is mounted, which is identical to that which the door and shutter assembly is

specimen and the associated construction is specific to that construction and forms part of

Ze
the construction being evaluated by test.
1.5.9 Supporting construction—a form of construction with adequate strength and
stiffness, which is used to support the specimen and to fill up the difference between the
size of the specimen and the opening in the test chamber in an impermeable manner.

ew
NOTE: The seal between the test specimen and the supporting construction should be
impermeable and withstand the test temperature. The seal is not part of the test.

sN
1.6 SYMBOLS The following symbols are used in this Standard. See Figure 1.1 for an
illustration and an outline of the test chamber and the specimen:
(a) Qa — apparatus leakage rate The leakage rate, in cubic metres per hour, of the test
chamber corrected to the standard reference conditions for temperature and pressure.
rd
(See Clause 3.1.2.)
(b) Qt — total leakage rate The leakage rate measured in the test and includes the
da

leakage rate of the test assembly and the test chamber corrected to the Standard

door types; however, a smaller apparatus is feasible if its use will be restricted to smaller

Ze
doorsets.
A fan system shall be provided to create a pressure differential across the door specimen
of at least 55 Pa. Provision shall be made to heat the circulating air to test temperature of
200 ±20°C.

ew
NOTE: Appendix B (informative) provides outline specification for a suitable apparatus but
other designs may be used, provided they achieve the same objectives.
The test chamber shall be well sealed and the apparatus rate (Qa) shall not exceed 7 m3/h
sN
at ambient and at medium temperatures. The fan and the heating system shall be able to
replace air at medium temperature to compensate for leakage rates through the test
assembly up to 55 m3/h.
rd
2.3 INSTRUMENTATION
2.3.1 Differential pressure A suitable instrument shall be provided to measure the
static pressure difference between the inside and outside of the test chamber. The pressure
da

head shall be mounted in the test chamber at a height of 1500 mm ±50 mm above sill

level. The pressure measuring equipment shall be capable of measuring differential

pressures with an accuracy of 5 Pa or 10% of the measured value, whichever is the lower.
an

2.3.2 Air temperature For the medium temperature test, 12 thermocouples shall be
used to monitor and control the temperature inside the test chamber. The thermocouples
St

shall be arranged in four horizontal rows, with three thermocouples in each row. The end
thermocouples in each row shall be in line with the door frame or jamb and the middle
thermocouple at the central door axis. The top row shall be 150 mm below the edge of the
free opening and the bottom row 100 mm above the sill level. The other two rows shall be
ht

equidistant between the top and the bottom row. The hot junctions shall be positioned
100 ±5 mm from the door face.

The thermocouple shall be of bare metal type with a wire diameter of 0.5 mm or steel-
sheathed type with the overall diameter not exceeding 1.0 mm. The temperature-
yr

measuring equipment shall be capable of measuring temperatures up to 250°C with an

accuracy of ±5°C.
p

2.3.3 Airflow Instrumentation shall be provided to measure the volume (Q t') and the
temperature (Tm') of air supplied to the apparatus to compensate for the total leakage. The
Co

apparatus shall be able to measure leakage up to at least 55 m 3/h to an accuracy of 1 m 3/h.

2.4 TEST SPECIMEN

2.4.1 Number As doors are usually of asymmetrical construction, leakage tests shall be
carried out from both sides for full evaluation. For medium temperature tests this will
require two separate specimens. One specimen may be sufficient if the door is absolutely
symmetrical in design or in the special case where information on leakage from one side
is required for limited application. The test report shall make the basis for the use of a
single specimen clear.

COPYRIGHT
7 AS/NZS 1530.7:1998

2.4.2 Size The door and shutter specimen shall be full size, or the largest size that can
be accommodated in the test frame to be mounted on the face of the test apparatus,
normally 3 m × 3 m. If an associated construction is used, on the sides or overhead, each

*
panel shall not be less than 200 mm in width.
2.4.3 Construction Test specimen construction and finish shall be fully representative

d
of that intended to be used in practice. Any seal used in the door or between the door

n
assembly and the associated construction shall be identical to that intended for application
in practice.

metal, glass, and the like, do not require any conditioning.

Ze
2.4.5 Pre-test analysis The physical characteristics of the door assembly, such as size,
thickness, material specification, shall be determined before the test to check the
construction of the door against the manufacturer’s specification and to allow adequate
description of the tested assembly.

ew
All gaps through which smoke can leak shall be measured and recorded. Generally these
are gaps between the edge of the door leaf/leaves and the door frame, between door
leaves, between the face of the door leaf and the door stop and at the sill level. A full
sN
description shall be given of the conditions prevailing at each edge and the presence and
the nature of any seals.
The forces required to open the door leaf or leaves and the closing moments shall be
measured and recorded together with the method used. If any latches are fitted, they shall
rd
be disengaged during the pre-test analysis.

2.5 TEST PROCEDURE

1541158
203.161.138.78

2.5.1 Setting-up procedure The setting-up procedure shall be in accordance with the
following:
an

(a) Specimen mounting The test specimen shall be mounted as in practice, in an

associated or supporting construction, in accordance with the manufacturer’s
St

instructions, with appropriate gaps and clearances between the fixed and movable
parts.
Door assemblies with plastered or back-filled frames shall be mounted in the
supporting construction so as to prevent gaps between the frame and the associated
ht

or supporting construction.
Where the installation of the door frame in practice does not involve complete

plastering or backing with mineral mortar, the intended installation condition shall
be simulated when mounting the specimen in the supporting construction.
yr

All gaps between the supporting construction and test frame shall be tightly sealed
with an impermeable material.
p

(b) Operation After installation of the assembly into the associated or the supporting
Co

construction, but before it is mounted in front of the test chamber, each door leaf, or
moving element of a hinged door assembly, shall be opened to an angle of 30° and
closed at least 10 times, using the automatic closing devices, if provided, to ensure
the assembly operates normally. With other types of doors, such as folding, sliding
or rolling shutters, the opening and closing operation shall be carried out as far as
practicable to check the operation of the assembly. This procedure is not a
durability test for which special procedures are available. If the door assembly is
required to comply with the maximum opening or closing forces these shall be
recorded and reported.

COPYRIGHT
AS/NZS 1530.7:1998 8

(c) Measurement The measuring equipment described in Clauses 2.3.1, 2.3.2 and 2.3.3
shall be installed and verified.
(d) Preparation After checks and verifications, the test specimen in its associated or

*
supporting construction shall be mounted and sealed in front of the test chamber
preparatory to performing the air leakage test. The door shall be in its final closed

d
position, unlocked and the key, if any, removed.

n
2.5.2 Air leakage test The air leakage test shall be in accordance with the following:

ala
(a) Determination of the apparatus leakage rate (Q a) The leakage rate of the apparatus
shall be established prior to each test series.
Masterspec (1541158) subscribers are licensed to temporarily download this document and may print
it but not more than 10% of the documents subscribed to may be held in printed form at any one time.

(b) Determination of the total leakage rate (Qt) After the setting-up procedure,
leakage tests shall be performed on the test assembly specimens following the

Ze
appropriate protocol for the information required as set out in Table 3.1.
The effect of the sill leakage shall be determined by conducting the leakage test
with the sill sealed, removing the sealing mechanism and re-establishing stable

ew
pressure conditions and then re-measuring the leakage.
For medium temperature tests, the average air temperature, as measured by
thermocouples specified in Clause 2.3.2, shall be stabilized at 200 ±20°C in
30 ±5 min with no individual thermocouple exceeding 200 ±40°C. During the
sN
heating up period the pressure in the chamber shall be progressively increased to not
more than 10 Pa.
The leakage rate through the test specimen shall be measured at pressure differences
rd
of 10 Pa, 25 Pa and 50 Pa or, for special purposes, at the pressure difference
specified by the sponsor. During measurement of the leakage rate the pressure
difference shall be maintained for 2 min and the value of Qt established at the end
da

of the 2 min period.

1541158
203.161.138.78

(c) Leakage rate for the test specimen (Qd) The leakage rate, in cubic metres per hour,
shall be calculated for each condition examined as follows:

TEST PRINCIPLE
(Informative)

n d
The test procedure in this Standard represents, in a simplified way, the exposure of a door
to the effects of a fire when the smoke travels along various routes and comes across a

ala
door in its movement. As part of the fire safety system, the door may be required to
restrict the passage of smoke in order to ensure that conditions on the other side of the
Masterspec (1541158) subscribers are licensed to temporarily download this document and may print
it but not more than 10% of the documents subscribed to may be held in printed form at any one time.

door do not become unacceptable. If the door is at some distance from the seat of the fire,

Ze
initially, the smoke reaching the door would have lost much of its heat in its travel.
Consequently, it will be less buoyant and at a lower temperature but, nevertheless, capable
of adversely affecting the safety level due to its effect on visibility and it ability to cause
smoke damage. Even where doors are not too distant from a fire, the exposure conditions

ew
alter progressively.
The test procedure identifies two exposure situations, in relation to either the distance
from the fire or the stage of development of a fire, a condition where there is no
noticeable rise in temperature and a condition when the temperature has arisen to a level
sN
at which ignition of combustible materials does not occur but heat damage may be caused
by deformation or by failure of seals. These conditions are termed as follows:
(a) Ambient temperature exposure conditions with air temperatures around 20°C.
rd
(b) Medium temperature conditions with air temperatures around 200°C.
In both cases it is assumed that there is no stratification of smoke.
da

Pressure is, however, developed on the exposed side and the pressure between the two
1541158
203.161.138.78

faces forces the smoke through all available gaps and openings. The pressure differences
of up to 50 Pa may be developed during this early stage which are sufficient to cause an
an

unlatched door to be forced open.

The test procedure measures the leakage of air from one side of the door to the other, the
smoke leakage rates are likely to be almost the same as smoke is particulate material
St

transported by air.
Most doors are of asymmetrical construction and, therefore, leakage characteristics will
depend on the side that is exposed to higher pressure. Therefore, full assessment tests
ht

need to establish the leakage rates from both sides by reversing the door installation. For
special conditions a single exposure may be sufficient but such a test will have restricted
ig

application.
The test does not specify a classification procedure or an acceptable leakage rate as this
yr

will depend on the needs of the controlling authority. In a number of countries a leakage
rate of between 20 m3/h–25 m 3/h is used where life safety is the main consideration.
When the need is to protect goods or the fabric against smoke damage higher rates may
p

be acceptable.

TEST APPARATUS
(Informative)

n d
B1 TEST APPARATUS The test apparatus consists essentially of a well sealed box,
termed the test chamber, which has an open side, provision for the supply of air to the

ala
inside of the chamber and a provision for heating the air to a temperature of 200°C. A
schematic arrangement of the test apparatus is shown in Figure B1.
Masterspec (1541158) subscribers are licensed to temporarily download this document and may print
it but not more than 10% of the documents subscribed to may be held in printed form at any one time.

Ze
B2 TEST CHAMBER The test chamber may consist of a sheet steel construction with
a layer of insulation on the inside to prevent loss of heat from the circulating air. The
permissible leakage rate for the chamber is not more than 7 m 3/h, measured at 50 Pa. The
front opening of the chamber should be designed so as to accommodate the largest size

ew
assembly on which information is required. In general a 3 m × 3 m opening will allow
tests to be undertaken on the majority of construction as this is also the recommended size
for fire resistance furnaces for vertical elements. If a laboratory is only likely to be
interested in testing single leaf doors of sizes found in normal buildings even a smaller
sN
opening may be feasible. As the test door has to be mounted in an associated or
supporting construction the actual size of the door that can be tested is smaller than the
size of the opening. The frame containing the test door assembly and the associated or
supporting construction is fixed and seated against the test chamber opening.
rd
The chamber may have provision for the following:
(a) A fan system capable of producing a pressure differential across the specimen of up
da

to 50 Pa and of circulating air in the chamber such that the pressure difference over
1541158
203.161.138.78

the height of the door is small.

(b) A piping system for the supply of air.
an

(c) Equipment for measuring the volume of air flow supplied to the chamber to
compensate for the air leakage.
St

(d) An arrangement to control the amount of airflow.

(e) Provision for fastening and sealing the test frame to the chamber.
ht

(f) A heat exchanger capable of heating the air supplied to the chamber.
(g) Adequate insulation for the walls and the piping to minimise heat loss from the
apparatus.
