Chapter number : Poetry : 05 Title of Chapter : The Ball Poem

Objective :

To enable students to comprehend the poem thoroughly and appreciate the central idea of the
poem.

Learning Outcomes :

 Reading skill: Students will be able to read the poem with proper pronunciation,
intonation and accent
 Students will learn about the deep message the poet intends to give through the poem.
 Students will learn new words and their application in speaking and writing
 They will identify the tone of the poem and poetic devices in it
 They will examine and analyse the tolerance, acceptance, responsibility and other
values depicted in the poem
 Speaking skill: They will relate the loss and pain highlighted in the poem with their own
experience and will share their opinion on tackling such situations
 Developing critical analysis among the students in a collaborative manner.

Experiential Content :

Teacher will ask the students to share their experience in the situation similar to the one that the
boy in the poem has gone through.

Have you ever lost something which was very close to your heart? How did you
feel on that loss?

The students will come forward one by one to speak on their ‘Experience of Loss’.

Explanation Content :

 The teacher will ask a few questions about the loss of something in life.
Tell us about one thing which is close to your heart.
Would you be ready to replace it with something else? Why?
What would be your reaction on losing it?
 Critical Thinking : Students will share their experiences and feelings related to some
loss in life.
 Teacher will introduce the students with the central idea and theme of the poem.
 Reading skill: Students will read the poem attentively and teacher will assist in getting
the meanings of difficult words.
 The students will go through the glossary given in the textbook.
 Teacher will encourage the students understand the entire poem and the message
hidden in it.
 Writing skill: Students will write down the poetic devices applied in the poem.
 Teacher will encourage the students to attempt the questions given in ‘Thinking about
the Poem’ in the textbook in pairs and groups.

Innovative content :

Teacher, through a motivational video clip, will tell the students Albert Einstein’s experience of
loss and his reaction on it. The students will express their opinion on it after watching the video.
