Lectio Divina for the Solemnity of the Ascension

Journal no. 1/ Date: May 31, 2022

NAME :Mary Joy Ann C. Maravilla Section:3-CMC
Opening Prayer: We begin our prayer: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make
us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our
exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to
follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
I. Reading (Lectio) Read the following Scripture two or three times.
Luke 24:46-53 Jesus said to his disciples: “Thus it is written that the
Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that
repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of
these things. And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon
you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed
them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to
heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with
great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God.

II. Meditation (Meditatio) After the reading, take some time to reflect in
silence on one or more of the following questions:

1. What words in this passage caught your attention?

The words that caught my attention are “repentance” and “sins”.

These two words might be usually the words we hear in relation to
Jesus our savior but then I believe these words are powerful. These
words made me stop and think that whenever I hear them, I
immediately remember how Jesus sacrificed himself to save the
humanity from our sins. From time to time, I think it is better if as
early as now, we can show remorse to the bad things that we have
done all throughout the life that we have lived in this world and ask
for forgiveness to our Father.
2. What in this passage comforted you?

“And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but

stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” This
is the passage that comforted me among the rest. There is
something in this line that made me feel safe and secured as long
as I am under God’s guidance. For me, Jesus will never leave me
hanging even in the most difficult times of my life and He has
proven that already so many times. He will save me from the
sorrow and blessed me with His grace when the right time comes.
All I must do is strengthen my faith, hold unto the wisdom, and pray
– one day I am already clothed with His power from on high.

3. What in this passage challenged you?

The part of the passage that challenged me is along in this line:

“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the
dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of
sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning
from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” As a human
being, as a student, as a teenager – I know that I have been
educated about this already that God has saved us from our sins
before but then it is still a challenge to me to be a good person. I
think it will be forever a challenge to me because being a good
person means make no mistakes and adore Jesus. I adore Jesus and
I believe in His glorious name. However, there are times that I say
white lies or sometimes do some awful things. These are the
struggles that I am currently dealing on my own. I pray to God that
He will not forsake me and trust in me for the reason that I can and
I will fix myself. The passage made me challenge myself to do better
and be better as a person, as a kid of my parents, as a sister, as a
student and as a child of God.
III. Prayer (Oratio) Read the Scripture passage one more time.
Write your prayer (praise, petition, or thanksgiving) depending on how
the Word inspires you.

PRAYER: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, Amen.

Lord, Jesus the Son of Almighty God. Thank you for the wonderful gift
of life. Thank you for your never ending guidance, love, and protection
to me and to my loved ones. Thank you for the blessings that you have
bestowed in my life. I am glad enough to receive all the little miracles
you have shown to me. May you continue to guide me to the right path
and give me enough courage to face the difficulties in my life. I entrust
everything to you Jesus Christ.

In Jesus name, we pray – Amen.

IV. Contemplation (Contemplatio) Read the Scripture again, followed by

this reflection:
1. What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of me?
Jesus, wants the best for me. He the Son of God wants me to be
fully spiritually ready in life. I feel like Jesus wants me to be a
woman with full of hope, love, and God-centered. Jesus is telling
me it is okay to sin but it is important to learn from my sins and use
them to be my guidance and be a better person.

2. Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer.

a. What hardships am I facing?

- Family problems
- School problems.
- Financial problems.
- Life in general.

b. How can I unite my suffering to the suffering of Christ?

To unite my suffering with Christ, I believe I need to devote my
self to him and believe in His grace. Having faith in Him is enough
for me to continue living and be optimistic in my life.

3. I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.

a. On what promises of God do I most rely?

A promise made by God that He will forgive us and still accept

us as His sons and daughters.

b. How can I increase in my trust of God’s promises?

Appreciating the little things that God has given me and my
family. The unending love of God and his protection are the
things that increase my trust on Him.
4. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great
joy.
a. What about my faith brings me joy?

By simply believing and having faith in God makes me happy

because I know having Jesus in my life is a big blessing from God
the Father.

b. How can I share that joy with others?

By spreading the word of God and giving back to others the

grace that I receive from Him.

Closing Prayer: Find an appropriate Prayer from the Book of Psalms. Or compose
your own prayer appropriate for the theme.

PRAYER: Based on Psalm 119:105

Lord, your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Thank you that we
