SECTION: BSA 1-5

INSTRUCTIONS: Follow all the instructions. Make sure to photo-document every step
is done, the progress of the experiment, and the final result of the experiment. Then
attached it to this document. You may also send a video presentation instead of
photo-documentation.

Experiment 1: Types of Germination

Materials:

Soil 10 seeds of rice (Oryza sativa) or corn (Zea mays)

Marker 10 seeds of mungbean (Vigna radiata)

Ruler 2 old Rectangular plastic containers or microwaveable

plastic containers (tall)

Procedure:

1. Mark the rectangular plastic container 1inch above the base. Note that this will be
the proper positioning of the seeds (Figure 1).

2. Fill the container with soil up to the marked line.

3. Sow the five (5) mungbean seeds on one side of the container where you can
observe the seed germination and another five (5) seeds on the other side. Then
sow the rice or corn seeds on the other container same as with the mungbean
and cover the seeds with 2 cm of soil (Figure 2).

4. Water the soil with a half a cup of water and do it every time the soil is dry.
5. From the 3rd day to 7th day, measure the length of the root and shoot 2 samples
from each crop, and draw it on the space provided below.

6. After one week, observe the position of the cotyledons relative to the seed
placement and the part of the seedlings which elongated.
7. Determine the corresponding type of germination (epigeal or hypogeal) on the
table no. 1 below.
8. Document the experiment from start to finish. Present it in a video presentation or photo
documentation on the illustration table below.

EXPERIMENT 2: Individual Plant Growth

Materials:

15 seeds of mungbean (Vigna radiata)

5 pots or 500ml plastic bottles

Soil

Procedure:

1. Fill the pots with soil up to about 2 cm below the brim.

2. Plant 3 mung bean seeds in each pot and water as needed.
3. After 1 week, reduce the number of seedlings into 1 per pot.
4. Note the number of fully expanded leaves at the appearance of the first compound
leaf onwards, until the plant dies.
5. Record the data on the table below and construct a graph correspondingly.
6. Discuss the trend of the graph in relation to crop growth and yield.
7. Document the experiment from start to finish. Present it in a video presentation or
photo documentation on a separate sheet.

Figure 3. The growth curve of mungbean

Discuss the graph and relate it to crop growth and development.

From day 15 to day 39, the growth of the Mungbean seed is readily visible in the graph
above. Mungbean seeds germinated in damp soil and began to sprout. I noticed that the
seed coat split after two days, and a little root grew downwards and a shoot sprang
upwards. When the branches and leaves are fully grown, the plant begins to grow.

Furthermore, we must meet the plants' basic demands for water, moisture, sunlight, and
air in order to grow and develop.
