PROBLEM & SOLUTION

About Your Business
Commercial duck farming is a profitable livestock business in the poultry industry. Duck eggs
and meat are important sources of high quality proteins, minerals and vitamins to balance the
human diet. Duck rearing does not require elaborate housing like poultry. Ducks are hardier well
suited for a weaker section where the level of management is moderately scientific. Khaki
Campbell is the best egg-producing breed in ducks. In Uganda, a few farms are rearing ducks at
a commercial level. My parent’s farm engages in duck farming for a very long time and this has
inspired me to enter the business independently

The increasing demand for duck meat and eggs resulting from the growing population has made
it possible for different poultry units to start up. Cracking Duck Poultry Farm is one of such
small scale businesses that have ventured into duck farming.

BUSINESS PROCESS
Features & Functionalities
Cracking Duck Poultry Farm is already offering broilers at affordable rates, and the layer line will
be a welcome advantage to the farm. Our business is based on satisfying a client’s needs. We
study each one’s needs and we tailor a product in their preferences. We have introduced
deliveries and online bookings where we engage with prospective clients. We are also a business
that offers interactive farm tours to the local population thus creating a social bond.
With the arrival of funding, we expect to expand into rearing layer. They well be well fed,
medicated and hygienically catered for so as to get the best quality eggs, use of good packaging,
and making deliveries for bulky orders.

equipment

MARKET OPPORTUNITY
Target Audience/Customers
Marketing duck products (egg and meat) is very easy. People all over the country like duck egg
and meat. In some areas, people like duck eggs and meat more than chicken meat or eggs. Duck
eggs are usually larger in size than chicken eggs. In some areas duck meat is less popular than
their eggs. However, there is no tension about the marketing of ducks eggs and meat. We have
been targeting restaurants and hotels, wholesale shops, supermarkets, bakeries, confectionary
centers, schools, and households.

Marketing & Sales- Your Marketing Plan

The business has concentrated on establishing a distribution network in the local market.
Additionally, contact with the supermarkets, departmental stores, and retail chains have been
maintained. Big hotels, restaurants, and resorts are the major consumers of this item. We are also
concentrating on developing awareness for the duck meat and eggs through social media
marketing (Facebook, WhatsApp, etc) is one of the easiest ways our products’ line can be
advertised for easy visibility.

BUSINESS ANALYSIS
SWOT Analysis
Strengths: local connections, a ready market that’s ever booming
Weaknesses: inadequate nutrition, housing, and access to veterinary services and lack of
expansion capital
Opportunities:
Threats: existing poultry diseases, loss of chicks through predation, inadequate nutrition, and
environmental stress

YOUR NEEDS.
Resource Requirements
Ducks are relatively easy to feed and may be fed a wide variety of meals. Copra, cassava, corn,
rice, fruits, and other low-cost items are part of their daily diet. Ducks also have a natural
foraging preference for green legumes, algae, aquatic weeds, fungi, earthworms, maggots, snails,
and other insects. These are some of the tools needed to expand the farm; feeders, drinkers,
perches, nests, crates, lighting system, waste disposal system, incubator, heaters or brooders, egg
tray, cages and coops etc. Other items being budgeted for include land prices, housing,
compliances, purchasing ducklings, feeding, and medicines.

Building a Team
Mutibwa David is the operations manager with over ten years in the meat business. He has vast
experience coupled with exemplary work ethics. I will be heading the marketing and sales
department. I have a vast experience in the poultry business of over 8 years. We have a field
team that’s very customer and business oriented that has served the clients very professionally
for the years we have been in operation. At the moment, the existing team is going to be
maintained until we start to fully operationalize the brooder. There is need to further recruit a
well-trained veterinary to handle the ducks in their infant stage.

YOUR PLANS
Business Forecasting and Planning
We are already at the stage of setting up the farm. All the survey and pilot studies have been
done and the venture is going to start. A duck, during its young life, duck produce more eggs.
We can get good profit by selling duck eggs but after it decreases or stops giving eggs, it should
be sell for meat. All the duck houses have been set-up on the farm but we need to expand them
and add more facilities. Duck start laying eggs after 5 months of birth and continue giving for 3
months and again it makes gap of 20 days. After 20 days again it starts producing eggs.
From 2000 ducks, we can produce up to 800 eggs per day. With these figures, the farm is kick
starting with 2000 ducks.

What are the next steps for your business?

For the next full year, the business will focus all energies and strategies to create a reputable and
accountable workforce, with a trained veterinary, accountant, sales and marketing team. On top
of that, the business will have expanded to start training single mothers and the girl-child with
the necessary skills-set in poultry management; offering day-old chicks and incubation services
for the local population so that they fully engage in commercial duck forming.
