Generation Z’s Preference

It’s obvious in the title of my reflection. Today’s generation preferred readings that satisfy
their young hearts. Readings that could give them butterflies in their stomachs because they could
relate to it or they want to experience it. Books such as Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are
obsolete in their bookshelves so they don’t bother reading one. Being in the generation who mostly
preferred reading wattpad, webtoon, kindle, mangas, and jonaxx stories rather than academic and
scholarly articles about our history that could really give an impact on how we view our own
country, our own fellowmen, find our national identity, and appreciate the significance of the past
is heartbreaking.

I am a hypocrite if I say I don’t read romance, teen fiction, sci-fi, or any books that could
make me feel joyful. Of course, as a book lover, I am fond of reading from the apps indicated in
the meme, however, I also make sure to read significant books and articles that contributed to the
independence of our country, readings that made an impact to the Filipino people in the past and
opened their eyes to fight slavery. It is true that these apps give us a break to the stressful
happenings in the society or in our lives, its not wrong to read from these apps, however, we should
also make sure to be full of information with regards to the readings that truly matters. If we won’t,
then real ignorance of our own history – a grievance that we fear, will happen.

In conclusion, being able to balance academic reading and readings intended for our leisure
or entertainment should be balanced. We should be more responsible as a citizen of our country to
know the most important writings ever written by people who made a difference in our country.
Let us show nationalism through reading the Philippine history or the books that made an impact
to the lives of the 104 million Filipinos and of course, a change in our country.

Ignorance to Philippine History and the Love for Other Country

In the past years we have seen the fast growth of South Korea. We live in the neighboring
country yet we can feel its growing influence to us. Kpop and Kdrama has captured the attention
of many people, in all ages, and Filipinos are not an exemption. Philippines ranked 2nd in the
greatest number of Kpop fans in the world, just a few numbers behind Indonesia. And its sad to
say that most people know more about them rather than the people in the history, and their
significance in the independence of our country.

The meme signifies how Filipinos have become less informed or even ignorant of their
own history, even the name of our national hero has become Rizal Park which is not really his
name but rather the place dedicated to him where he was executed, sometimes other Filipinos even
made December 30 as his birthday which was actually the day he died. This may just be a meme
but it could be true, it’s never impossible. There was even a famous vlogger who did not recognize
the national hero himself, it could be true that she did not know it or maybe just denied the hero
for her content. Furthermore, we can observe in our own community how many Korean
establishments have occurred, from restaurants to Korean shops where we could buy Kpop
merchandise and things famous in Korea. We have neglected the products handcrafted or produced
in our country. It seems like, we are fonder of the culture and entertainment of Korea than in the
Philippines.

Conclusively, our fondness of other culture and ignorance of our own continuously
decreases our nationality and patriotism. What can we do about it? As a Filipino citizen, we should
encourage our fellowmen to never disregard their own country. Knowing other culture and
enjoying the entertainment they could offer is never a bad thing, however, ignoring and never
looking back to where you came from is a dreadful thing to do.

The One that Got Away

Jose Rizal has been tagged by the youngsters nowadays as the “Pambansang Chixboy ng
Laguna”. He had many affairs during his lifetime including Segunda Katigbak, Leonor Valenzuela,
Consuelo Ortiga, Oh Sei San, Gertrude Beckette, Nelly Boustead, Suzanne Jacoby, his longtime
fiancce, Leonora Rivera and of course his wife, Josephine Bracken.

Rizal met his wife Josephine Bracken in the last days of February 1895, he was still in
Dapitan when he met the 18-year-old girl. She was an Irish girl who cam to Dapitan seeking for
Rizal to seek for eye treatment. Rizal became physically attracted to the beautiful lady probably
due to the loneliness and boredom that maneuvered his feelings to fall in love again. However, we
all know whom Rizal was badly smitten into, she was named Leonor Rivera. Leonor captivated
the heart of Rizal in ways that remain immortalized through time. Leonor was Rizal’s muse. She
moved the depths of his soul with her piano playing, singing and sweet ways. The attraction went
deeper and Rizal knew Leonor was a well-read woman of great intelligence.

Their love was right but in a wrong time. Distance and family pressure broke their
engagement; however, it is certain in the writings of Jose Rizal how he was so in love with his
distant cousin, Leonor. An in Leonor, according to the article by the journalist Elizabeth Quirino,
the before Leonor died, he wished to be buried along with the ashes of the love letters that Rizal
wrote for her signifying her unending love for the hero.

It is true that Rizal has made many affairs in his lifetime, if only, her long years of
engagement to Leonor did not broke, maybe they would’ve had a beautiful family together and
probably Rizal would have never met the 6 other girls after her. She is truly the one that got away
love of Jose Rizal.
