BFC 35503 – CONTRACT & ESTIMATION

SECTION 4

CQI
SUBMISSION DATE: 20 JULY 2022

1. Chapter 1:

Explain the interaction among key stakeholders throughout the project stages. You may add suitable
figure or flow chart to make clear your explanation.

2. Chapter 2: Preliminary Cost Estimating

(a) Explain the differences in rules for calculating project cost estimate using Floor Area Method
in comparison to Building Volume Method.

(b) You are assigned with a task to estimate cost of proposed 4-storey academic office building
project, as illustrated in Figure 1. A similar building project was constructed with total cost of
RM 32,743,635.00, floor area of 23,034.38 m2 and volume of 68,527.26 m3. Based on the given
figure and data, estimate the total project cost using:

(i) Floor Area Method

(ii) Building Volume Method

3. Chapter 3 – Quantity Measurement

(a) Based on your understanding and accordance to the principles of measurement stated in the
Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (SMM2), explain with sketches, the
principles and rules of measurement for:

(i) formwork
(ii) concreting work
(ii) steel reinforcement work

(b) Based on the given figures, perform taking off to determine the quantity of the following
items:

(i) Formwork for pad footing, column stump and ground beam.
(ii) Lean concrete for pad footing and ground beam
(iii) Concrete for pad footing, column stump and ground beam
(iv) Reinforcement bars in pad footing, column stump and ground beam.
(v) Links in column stump and stirrups in ground beam.

4. Chapter 4 - Build Up Rate

Table 1 shows relevant information for mixing/preparation of reinforced concrete (1:2:4 with 25
mm aggregate) for pad foundation using concrete mixer with 7/8 capacity. Calculate build-up rate
for one (1) metre cubic of the concrete.

Table 1
Item Labour constant @ Rate @ %

Cement (1280 kg/m3) RM 220.00/tonne

Fine aggregate (1500 kg/m3) RM 35.00/tonne
Course aggregate (1600 kg/m3) RM 40.00/tonne
Rental rate of concrete mixer machine (6 days/week) RM 200.00/week
Productivity of concrete mixer machine 5m3/hour
No. of labours needed to operate concrete mixer machine 3 labours/machine
Labour constant (productivity) for concrete mixing 3 hours/m3
Concrete wastage 50%
Worker salary (8 hours working/day) RM 40.00/day
Profit and management cost 20%
