Aim: To determine the energy value in food sample.

Problem: What is the relationship between the increase of temperature per gramme of food when burnt and the energy value of the food? Hypothesis: Cashew nut has a higher energy value than groundnut and red bean. Variables: Manipulated: Type of food sample Responding: Energy value of food sample Fixed: Mass of water

Materials: Fresh cashew nut, fresh groundnut, matches, distilled water and plasticine Apparatus: Boiling tubes, thermometer, long pin, electronic weighing machine and measuring cylinder. Technique: Observe and recorded the reading of the temperature increase after the food sample burn completely. Procedure: 1. 2. 3. Weigh one fresh groundnut and record the mass. Fill one boiling tube with 20 ml of distilled water. Set up the apparatus as shown below.

4. 5. 6. 7.

Record the initial temperature of the water. Burn the groundnut and put it as near as possible to the bottom of the boiling tube. Stir the water. Read and record the temperature when the groundnut had burnt out.

Calculate the energy value of the groundnut using the following formula: Energy value = Mass of water(g) x Specific heat capacity of water(J g C ) x Rise in temperature (C) Mass of groundnut(g) Teachers signature

Results: Food sample Initial temperature of water(C) Final temperature of water(C) Difference in temperature(C) Mass of water(g) Mass of nut(g) Energy value(J g ) Groundnut 85C 100C 15C 20 ml 3.3g 381.8 Jg Cashew nut 32C 100C 68C 20 ml 1.5g 3808 Jg Red bean 33C 70C 37C 20 ml 2.2g 1412.7 Jg

Discussions: 1. State three precautions needed when carrying out this experiment. Make sure that the nut is completely burnt before reading the temperature. Make sure that the nut is put as close as possible to the bottom of the boiling tube. Make sure that the water is stirred before reading the temperature. 2. Does the mass of the nut effects energy value? No. Because the energy value is the amount of energy produced when 1g of food is completely oxidized. 3. How can we apply the knowledge of the energy value in our daily lives? To plan our diets according to our daily needs.

Conclusion: Is the hypothesis is accepted or rejected? Give your comment. Hypothesis is accepted. Cashew nuts burns with a highest increase in temperature/grammes. Therefore, it has a highest energy value.
