Welcome to the 2022-2023

School Year!!
Intermediate Team with Mrs. Veil,
Miss Commings, and Mrs. Niette
Greetings families,

We wanted to share with you some exciting news about the

upcoming school year! Starting this year, 4th and 5th
grade students at St Mary School will be the new
intermediate team. Students will be switching classrooms
within this team, separate from the middle school grades.

Teachers heading up this new team are Mrs. Veil (4th grade
homeroom), Miss. Commings (5th grade homeroom), and
Mrs. Niette. We can’t wait to begin! It will be a wonderful
year!
Blessings from the Intermediate Team Teachers!
A little about Mrs Veil…
I grew up in Lancaster County in PA and
graduated from PSU with a BS in Elem Ed
in 2000. I am currently enrolled in Ursuline
College in their MA and Licensure Program
for Educational Administration.

I’ve taught in PA, CT, MD, and MA, grades

3, 4, 5, and 6, as well as at a school for
children with special needs both physically
and academically.

I have been married for over twenty years

and have four children, ages 18, 17, 15, and
11.
A little about Mrs. Niette…
My husband and I and our dog Winston recently
moved to Ohio from Louisiana. We are really
enjoying our time here!

While in LA, I graduated from Northwestern State

University with a degree in Child Development and
Family Relations. In addition, I completed my
teaching certification through the Louisiana
Resource Center for Educators. I taught 2nd and 5th
grade. I also had the opportunity to teach English as
a second language online to students in Beijing,
China.

I had the privilege of joining the St. Mary’s team

last March as the building substitute. I am excited to
continue for the 2022-2023 school year!
A little about Miss Commings…
I graduated from The College of
Wooster in May. While at Wooster
I double majored in Elementary
Education and Psychology.
I live in Spencer with my two dogs.
I often take them hiking on the
weekends!
I am very excited to join the St.
Mary’s team!
Why are we doing things differently this year?

● We have been planning on this change for a

few years at St Mary School.
● Experts say, developmentally, fifth graders
don’t often have the executive functioning
skills necessary to be as successful as they
could be in a departmentalized setting.
Those skills develop between ages 13-18.
How will this approach help our children?

● We are planning to be very consistent with our

structure and expectations to make the transition to
middle school easier and more seamless.
● Although we will be addressing individual
grade-level standards, we will also come together to
collaborate on problem-based learning opportunities
and community outreach.
● Students who need additional support or enrichment
will have it.
Who is Teaching What?
Dr. Seifried will still be teaching 5th grade Religion, and Mr. Woods
will be visiting all classrooms to promote STEAM inclusion.

**Mrs. Nicely will continue to provide intervention services.

Classroom Economy
Students will receive a salary for a class job.

We will be using an online banking system. All class money

will be electronic.

Students can use class money to buy privileges or gifts at our

class store.

We will tie in Class DoJo. Points will translate into

additional class money deposited or withdrawn from the
online account. (student, parent)
Homework
Students will be asked to write their homework
assignments in their agendas each day.
Homework will be posted online on our class
website along with other important information.
Homework is based on previously taught skills
and should be able to be done independently by
the student.
Classwork

Students will be asked to complete classwork in a

reasonable amount of time.
If not completed, students may be asked to take
work home to finish.
Orange Tuesday Test Folders

Tests and quizzes will be sent home each

Tuesday for parents to initial or sign, so we
know you’ve seen them. Please return
everything with the folder for us to file.
