Animal Abuse

Animals are very imported in human life since they play essential roles in our lives. They

have been used in various ways for human’s beneficial purposes. Some animals are considered

as a source of income whiles some areas resource to human. However, they have been used as

means of transport, food, protection and also for hunting. Above all animals provide a

companion to human (Merck and LeCouteur 4). In research laboratories, animals like rabbits and

rats have been used in testing drugs before they are administered to human beings (Tiplady 8).

They can as well be used by astronomers during research; for example, a dog can be sent to the

rocket to find out if human beings can be posted there. The bond between animals and human

beings seems to be deteriorating as some people decide to mistreat the animals by being cruel to

them.

Cruelty to animals is also known as animal neglect, animal abuse or animal cruelty; it

takes place in different forms. This includes international and overt acts of violence against the

animals (Tiplady 11). It also entails failure or neglect to provide for the welfare of animals under

one’s control. It is important to note that animal cruelty is not that much looked into more so in

cases involving physical harm, but when one causes psychological damage in the form of

torment and distress or even through terror, contravenes the animal cruelty (Merck and

LeCouteur 6). Since there have been so many forms of animals abusing, animal welfare

legislation both at the territory and state levels have failed to define it in an elaborative and

particular manner (Merck and LeCouteur 9). But otherwise, animal abuse is described as the

general way of neglect or omission that causes unreasonable and unnecessary suffering to

animals. The following acts are considered to be cruel to the animals;

 Beating or torturing an animal

 Transporting or confining an animal in a manner that is not following the animal welfare

 Failure to provide adequate water or food for an animal

 The killing of an animal in a way that is inhumane

 Failing to provide medical services to an ailing animal

 Subjecting an animal to poor leaving condition

 Shooting, stabbing, or beating an animal or even setting them on fire

Sometimes it is not easy to recognize animals that are mistreated since the owners do pretend

to be a friend to them (Merck and LeCouteur 13). For one to know an abused animal, the

following signs are vital to note;

 Having wounds

 Patches of missing hair

 Limping

 Untreated infected eyes

 Animals that are always chained

 Skinny animals

 Animals left outside - with no shelter

 Severe infestation by ticks or fleas

Since animals play essential roles in human life, it is therefore vital to take good care of

them. It is also essential that states with no policies on animal protection should come up

with acts for the sake of saving the animals (Tiplady 14). The rules should implement to

punish those found guilty of breaching animal welfare legislation. Serious offenders should

be fined or imprisoned.
