Chapter (1)

-1- Who is the author? What is the setting of the story?

Anthony Hope. Ruritania, a fictional country in the central of Europe, in the 19 th century (1890s).

-2- How old is Rudolf when the story starts?

Rudolf is 29 years old.

-3- Why was Rose angry with Rudolf at breakfast?

Because Rudolf was Idle (jobless).

-4- How did Rudolf justify not working?

He was wealthy and he had an important position is society.

-5- Rudolf Rassendyll was skillful. Explain.

He could speak 5 languages. He was good at riding horses. He was good with the gun. He was a strong swordsman.

-6- Rudolf was multilingual. Explain.

He could speak English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

-7- According to Rose, how is Rudolf different from his brother Robert?

Robert realises that his position has responsibilities, but Rudolf only sees opportunities.

-8- What kind of work does Rose suggest Rudolf should do?

To work with Sir Jacob Borrodaile who would be an ambassador in 6 months.

-9- Why has the Rassendyll family been interested in the Elphberg family?

Countess Amelia Rassendyll married a member of the Ruritanian royal family (the Elphberg) in 1755.

-10- Where did Rassendyll decide to travel? What did he tell his family?

He decided to travel to Ruritania. He told them that he was going walking in the Alps to write a book about social
problems.

-11- Why did Rassendyll decide to go to Ruritania?

To visit his relatives there, and also to attend the coronation there.

-12- Who was Antoinette de Mauban?

She was a French woman known for her wealth and ambition. She was tall and beautiful (30 years old).

-13- Why did Antoinette de Mauban come to the embassy in Paris?

Because Michael invited her in the embassy to attend the coronation.

-14- Who did Rudolf visit in Paris?

His friends, George Featherly who worked in the embassy and Bertram Bertrand who was a journalist.

-15- How were the innkeeper and her daughter different?

The innkeeper supported Michael. Her daughter supported the king.

-16- Why did the innkeeper like Duke Michael more than the king?

As Michael lived in Ruritania and cared about the people unlike the king.

-17- Why did Rassendyll decide to walk through the forest of Zenda?

He wanted to see the forest and the castle of Zenda. He also might meet the king.

-18- Describe the castle of Zenda.

It was very old but well built. It was surrounded by a moat. It was connected to a mansion by a drawbridge.

-19- How could the castle be reached? How could the mansion be reached?

The castle could be reached by a drawbridge. The mansion could be reached by a road.

-20- Who did Rassendyll meet in the forest? Why were they surprised to see him?

He met Sapt, Fritz and the king. They were surprised because he looked exactly like the king.

Chapter (2)

-1- Why did Fritz think that Rassendyll should not visit Strelsau? What was the king’s reaction?

Because Rassendyll looked exactly like the king. The king was surprised as he was not wise.

-2- Why didn’t Sapt and Fritz eat? What advice did they give to the king? Does he listen to them?

Because they had to get up early the next day. They advised the king not to eat much. The king didn’t listen to them.

-3- What happened to the king after eating the cake?

The king was poisoned. His face was red and his breathing was slow.

-4- Who poisoned the king? Why?

Michael poisoned the king, to become the king.

-5- Why wasn’t Rassendyll as sick as the king?

Because Rassendyll only ate one piece of cake, so he ate less poison.

-6- What would happen if the real king was dead?

Michael would take the crown and be the king.

-7- What was Sapt’s plan to save the throne?

Sapt persuaded Rassendyll to replace the king at the coronation.

-8- Did Rassendyll have any choice but to pretend to be the king?

No, he didn’t. There’s nothing else they can do.

-9- Who overheard Sapt’s plan? What did they do with the person?

Johann’s mother overheard Sapt’s plan. They locked her in the cellar with the king.

-10- Where did Sapt suggest hiding the king? Why?

In the cellar to protect him from Michael’s men.

-11- Why did Fritz and Sapt lock up Johann’s mother with the king?

To stop her from telling Michael and his men about Sapt’s plan.

-12- What was colonel Sapt’s plan to get the ill king back to the palace?

They will hide the king in the cellar of the hunting lodge. Rassendyll will play the role of the king. After the
coronation, Sapt and Rassendyll will come back and get the king back to the palace. Rassendyll will leave Ruritania.

-13- Why did Sapt, Fritz and Rassendyll go to the station early instead of waiting for Michael’s guards?

Because Michael’s men would kill them if they waited.

-14- What was the first thing Rassendyll, Sapt and Fritz did when they reached the capital?

The first thing was having breakfast at the train station.

-15- There were social and local divisions in Strelsau. Explain.

The rich lived in large modern houses and supported the king. The poor lived in small old houses and supported
Duke Michael.

-16- Why was Rassendyll afraid when he saw Antoinette in a balcony?

He was afraid that she could realise that he was not the real king.

Chapter (3)

-1- Who was Marshal Strakencz?

He was an important leader in the army.

-2- When did Rassendyll think that the marshal had a plan to test him?

When the marshal told the king to enter the old part where people were loyal to Michael.

-3- Why was Sapt so anxious about Rassendyll’s decision to ride alone through the old town?

Because people there supported Michael and would hurt or kill Rassendyll.

-4- How do you know that the poor people like Duke Michael?

They had paintings of him on their windows.

-5- Did Michael realise that this was not the real king? How did you know?

Yes, Michael realised that. Because the story said, “No one else realised that I was not the real king”. This means
that only Michael realised that.

-6- Why did Michael’s face turn white when he saw the king “Rassendyll”?

Because he had poisoned the king and the king was kidnapped in Zenda.

-7- According to Flavia, how was the king’s appearance changed?

His face was thinner. He looked more serious and tired.

-8-How long did Rassendyll expect to be the king?

Only one day.

-9- What did Fritz do when Rassendyll and Sapt went to Zenda?

Fritz guarded the king’s bedroom to stop anyone from entering it.

-10- What did Rassendyll and Sapt need to leave the city “Strelsau”? Why?

They needed a permit from the king, because no one is allowed to leave or enter without a permit.

-11- How did Sapt and Rassendyll get a permit from the king?

Sapt copied the king’s signature on the form.

-12- How did Sapt and Rassendyll get out of the palace?

They went through a secret passage in the wall and out of a secret back door.

-13- Which way did Sapt and Rassendyll go at the fork?

They took the way to the hunting lodge.

-14- What do you think the message “all is well” means?

It means that the king is captured as Michael planned.

-15- What happened at the lodge during the coronation time?

The king was kidnapped and taken to the castle. Josef was killed. Johann’s mother was released.

-16- What did Rassendyll and Sapt do when they didn’t find the king in the hunting lodge?

Sapt decided that Rassendyll should continue playing the role of the king.
