EARTH AND SPACE

3RD QUARTER – WEEK 3
CLIMATE
CONTENT STANDARD
1 factors that affect climate, and
the effects of changing climate
and how to adapt accordingly
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learners shall be able to

1 participate in activities that

reduce risks and lessen
effects of climate change
DESIRABLE AND MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING

COMPETENCIES/

1 Explain how different

factors affect the climate of
an area

2 Describe certain climatic

phenomena that occur on a
global level
Global Climate Change
Phenomenon
Climate Change
Climate Change is a long-term
change in the average weather
patterns.
Global Warming
Global warming is caused by
several factors such as man-
made, anthropogenic, or
natural.
Main Indicators of
climate change
Causes of Climate Change
Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is the natural warming

process of the Earth that results
when gases in the atmosphere trap heat from
the earth that would otherwise escape
into space.

Greenhouse Gases

The different greenhouse gases are carbon

dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide,
hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs), per
fluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride, and
water vapor.
Climate Change in Focus:
Impacts and Threats
Rising of Temperature
Shringking Ice Sheets
Sea Level Rise
Biodiversity Depletion
Extreme Weather
Ways to Mitigate the
Effects of Climate Change
Increasing Carbon sequestration and
conservation

“Carbon sequestration” describes

the process of capture and long-
term storage of atmospheric
carbon dioxide (CO2) in a stable
state.
Use of Bioenergy

Bioenergy is one of many diverse

resources available to help meet
our demand for energy.
Reduced fertilizer use

Nitrogen-based fertilizers spur

greenhouse gas emissions by
stimulating microbes in the soil to
produce more nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide is the third most
important greenhouse gas, behind
carbon dioxide and methane.

Anaerobic digestion of waste

Anaerobic digestion systems capture

methane and allow us to use that
methane in a beneficial way. Capturing
methane is important because
methane is a potent greenhouse gas
that contributes to climate change if
allowed to escape to the atmosphere.
Improve energy efficacy

Energy efficiency is the workhorse of

the clean energy world.
