To ensure optimum growth and development, mental health education needs to begin during early school
years. During this time. children form their first friendships and teenagers are shaping their self-worth and self-esteem.
Growing up, youth are faced with a host of challenges including exclusion, bullying, conflict, and poor self-esteem. It
is important that we acknowledge and equip children with the tools needed to manage these challenges. In a combined
effort between mental health professionals, parents and teachers, students’ mental health can be greatly improved, thus
setting the stage for a healthier and happier future.
Schools can promote positive mental health by building self-confidence and self-esteem. It is essential that
children are taught about the importance of mental health, how to recognize signs of poor mental health, and how to
seek out assistance for any mental health challenges.
By talking about mental health, we can promote greater acceptance and understanding which will in turn
increase help-seeking behavior. Mental health education in schools is extremely valuable as it can positively impact
the lives of our children and youth. Upon finding out its importance, Colongan Elementary school allocates time and
effort to craft and produce learning materials on mental health. Each adviser makes these learning materials available
once a month to ensure students’ mental well-being, but the vast majority feel ill-prepared to respond. Mental health
training can provide an important first step to addressing student mental health issues. Teachers who receive training
learn about essential resources and develop the confidence needed to help students.

B. Introduction
Disappointed in life?
No one experiences perfect mental health or well-being all of the time. We all have to learn
how to balance the different aspects of our lives. When things in our life change, we have to re-
establish the balance. However, ongoing mental health problems can take a real toll on your well-
being.
Mental health is not the same thing as the absence of a mental illness. Mental health includes
emotional, psychological and social well-being. It can influence:
Many people take care of their physical health before they feel sick. They may eat well,
exercise and try to get enough sleep to help maintain wellness. You can take the same approach
to mental health. Just as you may work to keep your body healthy, you can also work to keep your
mind healthy.
Thoughts
The way you think about something has a big impact on your mental health. Changes in
your thoughts often go along with changes in your mental health. When you feel well, it's easier to
see life in a more balanced and constructive way. When you aren't well, it's easy to get stuck on
negative things and ignore positive things.
Body reactions
Body reactions are changes in your body functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, brain
chemicals, hormones and more. Changes in your body reactions often go along with changes in
your mental health.
Emotions
A big part of emotions is the way you feel. Emotions can be pleasant, unpleasant or blended, such
as when you have two emotions at the same time. Changes in emotions often accompany
changes in mental health.

When your mental health suffers, it can become hard to enjoy life. You may start to feel run
down, both mentally and physically. Many of these changes can make it harder to enjoy a
balanced and rewarding life. Everyone can benefit from learning how to enhance and protect their
mental health—whether or not they’ve experienced mental illness or a substance use problem.

Conclusion:
When you start having negative emotions, it is time to “RCC”: recognize, challenge and
change negative self-talk. This is one way to improve your mood, motivation and mental health!
Mental health states are not a continuum. People do not usually progress from mental
distress to illness.
People can experience one or more states at the same time.
Different mental health states should be dealt with differently. For example, daily mental
distress may not need any intervention. People are able to adapt by themselves with
support from the family or community. People with mental health problems may need extra
professional help, such as counseling, in addition to family and community support. People
with mental disorders require best evidence-based care from properly trained health care
providers.
