Critical Analysis and Applications in Organization Behavior

 Billy Beane realized at the start itself that with 1/3rd of the budget of the big teams, there is no chance of winning world
series by Oakland A if they go by traditional route. So, he defined the 3 major goals at the start: replace 3 key leaving players,
create a championship winning baseball team and make money. He later found Brand who also believed in an
unconventional and cheap way of building team and hired him to help achieve the goal.
 Billy also showed the leadership required for the changes he wanted in organization. There were a lot of people, both within
and outside team who were critical of the approach. He first tried to make them understand. Then he showed them that with
their meagre budget this is best way to go. But still when coach decided to not play the team which Billy wanted, he took
aggressive approach and traded the few first teamers forcing coach hand.
 Another important characteristic of Billy was his self-belief. Even when initially results were going against Oakland, he
believed its just a small sample size and it will turn around. He also made the owner understand his plan.
 Billy was throughout a very motivational persona for the team. He used to be young prodigy who was supposed to do great
in MBL. But contrary he failed and had a very ordinary career. He understood how it felt to not succeed. Oakland was a small
team who used to happy with just competing against big players. But when Billy saw the players happy even after loss, he
lost his temper. He decided to change the culture. He also supported the player he bought. Most of them were rejected by
others and lack confidence or lack some easily taught able skill. He made them understand what they need to do.
 Finally, Billy was quite dedicated towards Oakland. After losing final of World Series, he got an offer from Red Sox to become
their manager which would have made him highest paid manager ever but he rejected the offer. Ironically, Red Sox using
same statistical method as Billy won the world series in 2004.
