Seating nipples
• Seating nipples are landing devices
which have a slightly restricted polished
ID which prevents tools from passing

om
through.
• Seating nipples do not have locking
·
recesses. ·

l.c
• The tool locates on the shoulder ·
of the
reduced ID section and is held in place
oi
by pressure from above.
• Standing valves are an example of a
downhole tool often located in seating
nipples.

Landing nipples
• Have a locking recess and seal area and can be
placed in tubing string at various depths although

it has the same seal bore.
• Same size plug can be used in selective position

Down hole blanking plugs

• Tubing Plugs or blanking plugs
✓ Tubing plugs (blanking plugs) are flow control devices used
for isolating formation pressure as a temporary or permanent

om
bridge plug.
✓ The plug is normally used to test tubing, set hydraulic packer
or for securing the well

l.c
• Standing Valve or check valves
✓ A standing valve functions as a downhole check valve.
oi
✓ This valve allows flow in one direction and may be landed in
a seating nipple or landing nipple.
✓ The plug is normally used to test tubing, set hydraulic packer
but can not be used for securing the well as it is not holding
pressure from below

Safety valve landing nipple

• Safety valve landing nipple is normally installed near
surface (+/- 200 ft)
• Safety valve is used to close in the well incase of flow line

om
leaks or to secure the well during well head repairs or
emergency situations
• Designed to accommodate wire line retrievable subsurface
safety valve
l.c
• Has a side port to allow free passage of hydraulic oil
oi
coming from the attached control line to the safety valve
pressure chamber
• Safety valve landing nipple must withstand the reservoir
fluid corrosive environment
IV 20

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

SSSV Lock Mandrel

▪ Lock mandrel is required to fix the wireline retrievable
safety valve to the landing nipple.

om
▪ The lock is designed so that the locking dogs fit into the
locking recesses of the landing nipple which the tool is to
be run or hung from.
l.c
▪ Lock mandrel has the same bore of the safety valve ran
with
oi
▪ Lock mandrel must withstand the max anticipated closed
in pressure
▪ Lock mandrel must withstand the reservoir fluid
corrosive environment

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Wireline Retrievable SCSSV

• This type of safety valve is controlled by a
control panel located at the surface.
• Wireline retrievable valves are attached to a

om
lock mandrel which can be landed in a landing
nipple
• The valves must be landed in a hydraulic
landing nipple
l.c
• Subsurface safety valves shut off the flow of
the well completely producing a pressure tight
oi
seal.
• The valve bore is so small compared with T.R.
safety valves
• The valve must withstand the reservoir fluid
corrosive environment IV 22

T.R.Subsurface safety valve

▪ TRSV can be retrieved only with the removal of the entire
tubing string
▪ TRSV has larger bore diameter and does not restrict the flow or
cause turbulence when compared with WRSV

om
▪ Provides accessibility for wireline operations below the valve
level without wireline intervention
▪ The valve has provision for WRSV if failed

l.c
▪ No wireline related to the valve and less operating cost
▪ Premature closer during wireline and coiled tubing operations
may result in fishing operation
oi
▪ Non-equalizing TRSV is recommended for gas injectors as the
valve can be opened by gas injection should hydraulic control
pressure was lost
▪ Self-equalizing TRSV is recommended for producer wells to
avoid complications involved in opening the valve

Flapper or ball safety

• Flapper valve is more commonly used than ball

om
valve
• Injection into the well can be established with the
flapper valve closed which is not the case with
ball valve
l.c
• Ball valve may be drilled if got stuck in closed
oi
position
• In either case running wireline tool through the
valve is risky due to the possibility of premature
closure
IV 27
https://oil-com.blogspot.com/
https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Subsurface Controlled Safety Valve (SSCSV)

• This type of safety valve is controlled by well conditions.

• When the downhole pressure or velocity reaches

om
predetermined conditions the valve will close.
• The valves are activated and actuated by the ambient pressure
differential created by increased fluid velocity which occurs

l.c
when the integrity of the production string above the safety
valve is broken.
oi
• The valves are either wireline retrievable or tubing retrievable
• The valve must withstand the reservoir fluid corrosive
environment
• Hydraulic control line is not required for this valve

Sliding side door (SSD) and ported

nipples
• Provides an access from tubing to annulus and

om
vise versa to permit circulation
• Used for selective production or injection
• Opens and close by wire line shifting tool
l.c
• Can be used for well killing if bull heading is not
oi
possible
• Can be used to circulate lighter fluid to tubing for
kicking off wells in absence of coiled tubing

Expansion or travel joints

• Used to eliminate any stress resulting from tubing

om
contraction or expansion due to temperature or
pressure changes
• Prevent tubing buckling and related inaccessibility
problems
l.c
• Assist in spacing out and tubing landing on tubing

• Potential leaking tool if elastomers fail
