Brief Introduction

The Earth’s natural resources include air, water, soil,

minerals, plants, and animals. They are used to make food, fuel
and raw materials for the production of goods. Natural resources
such as coal, natural gas and oil provide heat, light and power.

To sustain Earth’s resources means the use of components of biological diversity in a way
and at a rate that does not lead to the long- term decline of biological diversity.

Maintaining its potential to meet the needs and aspirations of present and future
generations should be the responsibilities of everybody in: (a) reducing, reusing, and recycling of
whatever we utilize; (b)volunteering in community clean-up drives; (c) conserving water; (d)
avoiding the use plastic products excessively; (e) engaging in tree planting activities; (f) not
sending chemicals into our waterways.

Modifying the environment to fit the needs of society is causing severe effects. Some human
activities that cause damage (either directly or indirectly) to the environment on a global scale
includes population growth, overconsumption, overexploitation, pollution, and
deforestation.

But on a daily basis, human activities that cause destruction to the environment are:
(a) driving a car (b) throwing of food as waste (c) overconsumption of meat (d) excessive use of
plastic and paper (e) disposal of water used in washing (f) Incorrect disposal of batteries and ink
(g) boiling water with electrical appliances.

Conservation is the practice of caring for resources so all living things can benefit from
them now and in the future.

Below are suggested ideas how to reduce the effects on human activities on natural
resources.

1.) Make electricity more efficient.

2.) Use more renewable energy.
3.) Promotion of sustainable fishing rules
4.) Improve recycling systems.
5.) Minimize consumption.

Activity 1-Un-Earth the Resources!
Objective: Describe the use of the Earth’s resources.

Our planet is the source of everything that you use and make. Listed below
are the resources that the Earth provides for us, to meet our needs.

Activity 2-Objection Sustained!
Objective: Suggest ways to sustain the Earth’s resources.

Since it is humans who cause destruction of the Earth’s resources, it is also humans
who can amend their wrong actions.

Directions: Analyze the situations below, then identify the appropriate actions you can do
to sustain the resources of our planet from the given options.

plant a tree reduce conserve water reuse clean-up drive

Human Activities Needs to be Addressed Action Needed

e.g. Illegal mining. Plant a tree
1.) Illegal logging.

2.) Garbage on beaches

3.) Too much leftover foods.

4.) Excessive use of resources.

5.) Collected rainwater in the container

6.) Scheduled water interruptions

7.) Unused back portion of papers.

8.) Conversion of forests into mining fields

9.) Littered public park after a community event.

10.) Continuous flow of water while brushing and bathing.

Activity 3-Human Activities that Cause D-EARTH(death)

Objective: Identify the human activities that affect the natural resources
Directions: Identify the human activities that destroy the Earth’s resources depicted by each
image by supplying the missing letters. After that give its effects in the environment and
human lives. human lives.

Join environment-friendly groups.

Switch to non-plastic water bottles.

Plant a tree (in vacant lot /backyard).

Decrease the amount of paper you print.

Minimize the use of plastic when buying goods.

Switch off classroom lights and fans when not in use.

Switch off faucets in the school or park when not in use.

Remember

Natural resources are materials from the Earth that are used to support life and
meet people's needs. They must be conserved for future use because there is no
reasonable way for humans to produce more.
Natural resources are used to make food, fuel, and raw materials for the production of goods,
provide heat, light and power.
Human Activities that Affect the Earth Resources
• Population growth is the rate at which the number of individuals in a population
increases in a given time period.
• Overconsumption describes a situation where the use of a natural resource has
exceeded the sustainable capacity of a system.
• Overexploitation or overfishing is the removal of marine living resources to levels that
are too low for sustaining viable populations.
• Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides
forest.
• Pollution refers to the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or
thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.
Daily human activities that destroy the Earth Resources
➢ Throwing of food as waste > Overconsumption of meat
➢ Disposal of water used in washing. > Excessive use of plastic and paper
➢ Incorrect disposal of batteries and ink. > Boiling water with electrical appliances
➢ Driving a car (with limited cargo or passengers)
Ways to Mitigate the Effects of Human Activities to Natural Resources
Here are some ideas to mitigate the effects of human activities that destroy the
Earth’s resources.
Planting trees Use more renewable energy
Conserving water Reduce, reuse recycle materials
Minimize consumption Promotion of sustainable fishing rules
Don't send chemicals into our waterways
