1. IMPORTANCE OF STRUCTURE DESIGN:

The principle aim of the structural design is to prepare necessary data for the construction of the structure, which shall
possess adequate strength and stability during the action of all possible loads in its life span. The process consists of
integration of consideration of design regulation, local condition and functional need. The behaviors of the structure in
terms of stresses and strength have to be determined closer to the reality when subjected to the possible actions The
subject matter, such as, the properties and mechanics of the materials, analytical methods, design techniques and
production of the construction documents, studied in isolation to address in an integral approach to arrive at the creation of
the needful structure.

This report summarizes structural analysis and design of a building. In general, context of the country, Nepal, the building
is located in seismic zone V, with the considerable medium denseness sand. According to the seismographs and risk
zoning maps, the country lies in a very high seismically active zone.

Thus, the seismic structural design of structures is found to be very essential for countries like Nepal. The structures need
to be designed and detailed to counteract, the internal forces induce due to the earth mass shaking in base of these
structures. The design should ensure the structure against stability, strength and serviceability with acceptable levels of
seismic safety.

The probable maximum earthquake occurrences are not so frequent; it would not be economically feasible to design the
building to ensure that they remain elastic and damage-free.
Thus, it is reliable to design the ductile structure and not to
design damage free structure during the major earthquake. The
building has been designed as earthquake resistant design, i.e.
building should not be collapsed during major earthquake. The
design shall ensure the structure against stability, strength and
serviceability with acceptable levels of seismic safety.

The analysis and design has been based on IS1893-2016 and

design is based on IS800-2007 for steel and IS456:2000 for RC
members. Considering the requirements of service and seismic
loading the structure is prone to, detail structural analysis and
design is carried out.

2.4 DESIGN CODES AND STANDARDS:

 IS875 part 1, Code for design loads in building and structure
 IS 875 part 2, Code for design Imposed loads in building and
 IS1893-2002, Code of practice for design of Seismic Resistant Concrete structures.
 Design of Reinforced Concrete Structure – IS456:2000
 Ductility design for earthquake resistant structure IS13920

2.5 MATERIAL SPECIFICATION:

Considering Architectural, Economic factors and the stiffness and strength, the building demands reinforced cement
concrete (R.C.C.) structure which has been used as the major feature of the building. The selected material concrete also
confirms the availability and ease in construction. The concrete grade used is M30 and M20 as per IS Specification. This
material provides minimum grade of structural concrete and favorable for easy production and quality control as well.

In case, for the increase of the ductility, the reinforcement bars Fe 500 has been provided as longitudinal and shear
reinforcing in Beams, Columns, foundations, and slabs wherever R.C.C. is used.

Considerations of material for loading and strength parameter are as detailed below:

Material Components:
Cement: 53 or 43 Grade Ordinary Portland Cement for the main structural
elements
Steel: TMT-steel of Fe500 N/mm2
Wall: Conwood wall of 11.822KN/m3
Sand: Specification as per IS Code 383
Aggregate: Specification as per IS Code 383

2
Structural Components:
Concrete:
Grade: M20 for all Footings.
Characteristic Compressive Strength: 20N/mm2 for all RC Footings
Unit Weight: 24.5 kN/m3

Steel Reinforcement:
Grade: Fe500 (for both longitudinal and shear reinforcement)
Structural Steel
Grade: Fe250[ Fy = 250N/mm2; Fu=415N/mm2]
Non-Structural Components:

Conwood wall:
Unit Weight: 11.822 kN/m3
Finishing:
Flooring: 0.98 kN/m2
Gypsum Board: 0.223 kN/m2
Railings: 0.6 kN/m

2.6 STRUCTURAL ELEMENT DESCRIPTIONS & ASSUMPTIONS:

 The building is Residential building with spaces for residential loads.
 The Steel Section of Structural column would be Sq. Tube 100X100x3.95mm infilled with M20 concrete
 The Tie beam section are Sq. Tube of 100x50x3.65 with Top bottom plate of 6mm
 The Foundation will have the Isolated Footing type to transfer the load of building. The thickness of
Isolated mat would be 150mm to 200mm of size and two-way punching shear requirement for footing.
 All Floor Slabs are made of conwood of 25mm thickness.
 All the Columns and RCC wall are of M20 grade of Concrete and structural steel of Fe250 grade..
 Seismic loads shall be considered acting in the horizontal direction (along either of the two principal direction) and
not along the vertical direction.
 The loads distributed over the area are imposed on area element and that distributed over length are imposed on
line element whenever possible. Where such facility is not feasible, equivalent conversion to different loading
distribution is carried to apply load to the Model to reflect the real case as far as possible.

2.7 LOADING PARAMETERS:

a) Dead Load:
Comprises of all the self-weight of all the components of the building each floor wise
Average load of Exterior wall 4-inch-thick on all frame in floors = 1.12 kN/m
Average load of Internal Partition 4.5 inch wall on all frame floors = 1.0 kN/m
Unit weight of Materials:

2.9 SEISMIC LOADS:

Seismic load on the building is calculated automatically and distribute to each floor from software ETABS 2017 V 17.01
and only seismic coefficient is inputted to the software as calculated before. The seismic coefficient is calculated as
follows:
The Design base shear is calculated as follows:
Vb = Cs*W
And Cs = SDS/(R/I)
Safe Bearing Capacity: 100KN/m2 for Isolated Foundation [From Soil Test Report]

The design base shear (Vb) is distributed along the height of the building as per IS1893-2002 by the following expression:

Vb = Ah W…………………………………….……………..Eqn (1)

And

……………………………………………Eqn(2)

Similarly, for Vertical Base shear the Sa/g value is adopted as 2.5 from Eqn (2)
where
Ah = Base Shear Coefficient,
V = total design lateral force or shear at the base of the
structure (kN)
w, and w, = the portion of the total effective seismic weight
of the structure (W) located
or assigned to Level
Z =Seismic Zoning Coefficient
I = Importance factor related to the structure
R = Response Reduction factor of Building

For seismic loading, mass source is defined as below:

TABLE: Mass Source

Name Include Added Include Include Include Lump IsDefault Load Multiplier

MSD No No Yes Yes No Yes Yes Dead 1
MSD No No Yes Yes No Yes Yes Wall+Finishing load+Superimposed load 1
MSD No No Yes Yes No Yes Yes Live<3KPa 0.25

The Earthquake lateral loads were used in the combination from the seismic coefficient method based on IS1893-2016.

Modal analysis is carried out using Finite Element Methodology (F.E.M.) based three-dimensional analysis software
ETABS 2017 V17.01.

3. DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS:

The design for components like columns and beams are carried out with the help of software ETABS 2017 V17.01 and
Isolated and Strap beam foundation tools and relevant Indian Codes IS456-2000 and IS800-2007.

3.1 FOUNDATION DESIGN:

The design of the foundation is as per of IS456. The cross checked is done for punching shear, maximum moment
manually. Allowing bearing capacity of the soil has been assumed as 483 kN/m2 for Isolated Footing for 1.5~2m depth of
foundation. (Assumed)

12
3.2 COLUMNS:
Columns are designed with the help of ETABS. Each column was designed for the total vertical load coming on to the
individual column. The percentage of steel is checked as per limit governed by IS456. The stirrup area is checked for the
spacing provided. This shall enable to resist all the shear all the staircase has been governing. Apart from that this also
assisted in decreasing the percentage of rebar in the columns.

The spacing of stirrups is as per the requirement of seismic criteria given in seismic code and seismic detailing code. Also
lapping and any other detailing requirement of IS13920-2016 is followed.

3.3 BEAMS:
Beams are designed with the software ETABS considering the reversible effect due to the seismic force. The most critical
value of seismic force of all possible direction has been considered.

The shear stirrups are designed as per the requirements and instruction of code and area of the stirrups are checked for
provided spacing. The spacing of the stirrups is governed by the seismic detailing requirements.

The input loads of Columns, grade Beam and their corresponding outputs are as below with Slab calculations.

3.4 TYPICAL CALCULATION OF COLUMNS, BEAMS AND SLABS:

4 CONCLUSIONS:

The seismic design of the residential building is done as per IS1893-2016 Codes and IS. The Dead, Live Load and wind
load of the building is taken as per the IS875. The seismic load is as per IS1893 by seismic co-efficient method and the
response spectrum method is assigned to the analysis and design software ETABS.

The analysis of the 3-D model after assigning all the dead, live and seismic load is done in ETABS. And also the design of
each and every member of column and beam as well as the foundation is done from the ETABS using IS456.

The other detailing rules for column, beam, foundation and the beam column junction etc concerning the stirrups size,
spacing, lap length, confining of joints are done as per the IS139208 for ductile design.

After design of all members, the structural drawings are drawn as per design and other detailing rules for earthquake
resistant building.

Hence safe, stable and economical seismic design of the building is done.

5. STRUCTURAL NOTES:

original soil.
2. The line slope between the adjacent excavations for footing or along the steeped footing shall not exceed a rise 1
in a run of 2.
3. In case the footing is on the fill up ground, the contractor shall fill the ground or pit by the dry mixtures of stone dust and
aggregate in the specified ratio in layers by layers (not to exceed 150 mm before compaction) achieving 95% compaction
in relation to undisturbed soil with well compaction to achieve hard bed up to the soffits of the footing concrete level or as
directed.
4. Placing of foundation concrete shall be done as soon as excavations have been completed, well compacted,
leveled & written approved by the consultant.
5. The contractor shall take all the responsibility for full protection, pumping water if occur while doing excavation
until completion of the foundation work.
6. The adjacent structure, if existing any, shall be fully protected by shoring while digging and laying of foundation.

C BACK FILLING
1. Backfill to the foundation pit shall be done simultaneously on both sides.
2. Back filling shall be done in layers of not more than 150 mm. Each layer being properly compacted to at least
95% modified proctor density.
