Introduction

Story Comprehension To Go was developed for students in grades 2-5, especially those
who have difficulty with reading comprehension tasks. It includes numerous brief reading
passages with reading comprehension questions for each one. This resource does not
address decoding; it highlights essential reading comprehension tasks, including these:

Detecting the main idea


Recalling details
Vocabulary and semantics
Comparing and contrasting
Exclusion
Problem solving
Characters and actions
Figurative language
Predicting
Making inferences
Drawing conclusions
Paraphrasing
Summarizing

The readability of the passages is controlled, based on the Flesch-Kincaid readability


statistics. These statistics were revised in 2002; the new statistics yield a higher grade
level in most cases than the previous ones. The range in readability is from grade levels
2.0 through 4.9. Each section includes ten passages with the following readability ranges:

Passages 1-4 Readability 2.0-2.9

Passages 5-8 Readability 3.0-3.9

Passages 9-10 Readability 4.0-4.9

The question pages for each passage also ask students to formulate questions about what
they have read. The last task for each passage is a related writing prompt.

Use these passages for groups of students or individuals. Photocopy the material so each
student has a copy. Encourage your students to highlight or underline key information as
they read each passage and to jot down any questions they have.

Research proves that repeated readings improve reading comprehension and that three
readings are usually sufficient repetition for a student to grasp the content, assuming a
passage is at or below the student’s reading competency level. We recommend training

students to read a passage three times for adequate comprehension before trying to answer
the comprehension questions.

The reading comprehension questions are similar to those found on classroom and national
reading comprehension tests. Have your students read each possible answer for the multiple-
choice questions before they select their answers.

The answers for most of the comprehension questions are listed in the answer key in the
back of this book. In some cases, the answers are just examples of appropriate responses.
Accept all logical responses as correct.

As you present this information to your students, model your own reading comprehension
strategies. Talk about ways to rescan a passage to find key information and other tips that
will help your students improve their reading competence and confidence.

We hope you will find this book a welcome resource to help students understand and find
satisfaction in what they read.

Ice-skating and inline-skating are both sports you can enjoy all year. No
matter which one you like better, they are great exercise.

To enjoy both sports, be sure the boots fit well. If the boots are too tight or

ankles. Inline-skate boots are usually made of hard plastic, but ice-skate boots

Tyne loves to run. She runs each morning. She jumps out of bed and puts
on her running clothes and shoes. Then she stretches her legs, back, and
arms. Then she runs downstairs, gets a big drink of orange juice, and heads
out the back door.

Tyne’s favorite place to run is the bike path. She sees friends who are
running, too. They run at the same pace till they head for home. In the past,
Tyne felt as limp as a wet rag as she went home.

The track coach at Tyne’s school, Northshore Academy, wanted to get her
on the track team. Tyne said she couldn’t join because she had to work after
school. Coach Rey talked to Tyne’s mom. They worked out an agreement. If
Tyne would come practice after work, Coach would come back to school and
help her.

It’s time for Speech 101, Ling’s worst class at Bell Junior High. He despises
this class so much that he has put off taking it until now, his last year in junior
high.

Ling has tried taking Speech 101 before. Each time he starts taking the
course, he withdraws because of stage fright. He gets so nervous before a
speech that he shakes, gets chilled, and can’t seem to say a word. He knows
what he should do before he speaks, like breathe deeply, relax, or go for a long
walk. Nothing seems to help.

Now it’s time to take the plunge. Ling has no choice. He must do the
speeches and try to pass the course.

The assignment for the first speech is My Favorite Hobby. Each student
must talk with the speech teacher before presenting his speech. Ling chose his
hobby and went to see his teacher.

Mr. Gray knows Ling from all the other times he’s taken speech. He asked
Ling to sit down and tell him about his topic. Ling told him that he likes to
work out and lift weights, but he’s not sure he can talk about it. Mr. Gray got
an excited look on his face and said, “Ling, this is perfect! You can lift weights
while you give your speech. Then, you’ll breathe deeply, relax, and put all your

Dan fall. “I’d better watch where I’m skating,” Kevin thought. He began to
perspire just thinking about it.

Dan stopped skating and watched the others. Kevin and Jeff skated faster
and faster. Before long, Kevin tried his skill on the lowest ramp. Whoosh, he
landed safely and kept on skating. By the end of the afternoon, Kevin was
