1. Biag ni Lam-ang was first completed as an epic during the Spanish Colonialization. Now, what is the impact of
Christianism in this period in the creation of the epic poem, Biag ni Lam-ang and in the Ilokano culture?
The impact of Christianism in this period is that it helped the Spaniards conquer the Philippines. Moreover,
converting native Filipinos to Christianity was their aim. Then, they succeeded and converted majority of Filipinos,
83% of the population belonged to Christianity. But many natives still fought and stayed loyal to their beliefs.

The story emerged from the Ilocos region of the Philippines. Therefore, the story also emerged from Ilocano
culture. From my perspective, the Ilocano culture were very strong and fierce as the epic illustrates. Moreover,
Ilocanos are also known to be hardworking and thrifty ; The resiliency of the Ilocano people is probably the result
of their geographic location and unpredictable weather.

3. What is/are the theme/s of the epic poem, Biag ni Lam-ang? Cite some phrase/s in the text to defend your
answer.
The love for his father, who may be in danger, and his willingness to do anything to protect him are, in my opinion,
the epic poem’s theme. Since he was so furious when he dreamed of his father getting beheaded by the Igorots.
Then he rushed to the enemy and killed them all. Moreover, It’s like a love and war story.

4. If you will be given the chance to change the ending of the story, how will it end?
If I would be given the chance, I would not change the ending since his resurrection represents the Ilocanos
strong and fierce spirit. If I would change the story such as not resurrecting him then that would not have been an
epic poem. Moreover, the magical pets represents defeat, hope, and resurrection, showing that you must
experience failure in order to succeed. The ending of the story significantly symbolizes the Filipino culture which to
never give up.
