HOPE MINISTRIES UGANDA PROJECT PROPOSAL LAYERS POUTRY KEEPING.

This project proposal is about the starting of a layer POUTRY keeping scheme as to help out the vulnerable
batwa children at Hope ministries children’s village in Kanyinabulemano village in Kihiihi sub county in
Kanungu district. The chicken project is essential for generating incomes to sustain the children at the
village but also supplement their diet to reduce malnutrition and other health risks that come along with
poor feeding. Once the project is implemented, Hope ministries will sustain herself by 20 percent.

1. Introduction

With the social, political and economic changes around the globe like Covid19 pandemic and Wars, Hope
ministries Management and strategized how to sustain the children at the village home in case donations are
not coming through as expected. The proposed layer poultry project will generate income to meet 20 percent
costs of managing the children’s home.

2. Background:

Hope Ministries Uganda (HMU) is a faith based non-profit making indigenous Non-Governmental
organization initiated in 2010, and registered under the non-government organization Board of the ministry
of Internal Affair in 21st-august-2019, charitable number MIA/NB/2019/08/2740 and Registration number
3231. HMU started its operations in Kisoro district and we now operate in Kanungu, Kabale and Nyungamo
in rural poor communities occupied by the Batwa. HMU work directly with rural poor marginalized and
disadvantaged Batwa Orphans, Disabled, the aged, Women especially young-mothers, widows, displaced
persons, the illiterate and young children in communities aimed at improving rural Batwa community
livelihoods through the implementing development oriented programs including vocational training, water,
sanitation & Hygiene, maternal health, child/orphan education & scholarships. The organization cater for
over 350 Batwa children in their children’s village in Kanungu district.

HMU Mission:
Proclaiming the life changing gospel of Jesus Christ to a forgotten people, while meeting the spiritual,
physical and emotional needs of men, women, and children who are homeless or in need of hope.

3. Executive Summary:
Looking at this proposal; “Hope Ministries” we have noticed that we can tackle our financial needs to
achieve our goals as an NGO while delivering the best nutritive values to the communities through
supplying eggs and off layer chicken as well as providing good nutrition to the children through feeding on
off layer chicken and eggs as to be explained below.
We have discovered; according to research, that poultry business is profitable but needs to follow the proper
guidelines when starting. It also needs one to know how big the market around is. Our goals as a ministry
upon starting this project are as follows.

1. To reduce dependence on donor funds by 20 percent through sell of eggs and off layers.
2. To be able to fund the ministry going forward and opening more farm sections at the children’s
village.
3. To offer a way of tackling malnutrition diseases through the delights of food with high nutritive
values.
4. To have a health standard of living within the club, the community and the region at large.
5. To grow and become a stable farm brand known in the top class.

In order to achieve the above, we researched and found the following summary points as guidelines to
victory on our layer production.

8Point Summary for layers (egg production):

One can get into egg production either by starting off with day old layer chicks, and raising them through, or
by buying-in point of lay pullets which start laying immediately after. In this case we chose to deal with
fully grown up chicken ready for egg production.

• There are four main breeds of layer birds in Uganda: The H y-Line, the Novogen Brown, the Lohmann
Brown and the H & N.
• Each of these birds has been raised for egg production in Uganda and they just need to be managed well.
• Weight management is a key to producing good egg-laying birds. Weight should be monitored during
brooding, grow-out and laying.
• Bio-security is vital in managing layers because they are maintained for a longer period in one place.
• It is important to understand the vaccination required for your particular flock from your veterinarian or
hatchery partner.
• It is important to understand the standard weight pattern and the standard production graphs of layer birds
because this is important as a management tool.

• Records are important for an egg laying enterprise, and these need to be compared with the breed
standards for the bird you keep.

The above points which can help us to plan our project description and work plan;

4. Project Description:

The project is a package which requires a site for it to be conducted. As a starter, we decided a place within
the children’s home in Knyinabulemano village in Kihiihi sub county to conduct our project. This site is
installed with a good water supplying system for our project and is spacious.
Some construction may be of value stated that the type of housing used for the birds is brick walled but if n
we already have a cage for the project. Our project is expected to start with 600 mature layers ready to lay
eggs. This is due to the need to get returns as soon as possible as opposed to buying layer chicks.

5. Project Work plan:

The following section explains highlights how the project will be undertaken taking into consideration the
current situation of the pandemic of Covid-19 along with its regulations.
Firstly, we need to take into consideration of the labor issues. The workforce which will be undertaking this
project should be experienced and well trained about the project.

Secondly, a business without a good security plan is bound to failure and losses. We decided to install a
fence around our premise. We also put into our plan, the idea of installing lights in a manner which will
allow the premise keeper to notice any unlawful entry into the premise.

Thirdly, they say business is people and we cannot eliminate them from the equation. We saw it fit to find a
way to have a good relation and with the people surrounding our area as well as other communities and in
order to do this, we opt to do door to door flyer distribution telling people of our produce. We also want to
venture into finding supply contracts with shops and restaurants in order to bring into existence the issue of
quick return. A set of contact details will be in place and distributed through different platforms to allow a
two-way communication between us and the customers. This will allow enhanced participation between
both parties to make the Hope ministries a big supplier. A good water supply system should be put in place
and we find it more efficient and cost saving to install solar water pumps as well as a borehole. Still looking
at cost saving, we will need to install a solar panel for a good lighting system.
Also there is need to consider the security and safe keeping of the feed for the birds and so, a small cabin
would be needed inside the premise; both for feed keeping and for keepers housing so this cabin should be a
two roomed, one room for the safekeeping of tools and feed and the other for the worker; keeper. This might
be a temporary structure which will need to be developed as time flies when the project grows.
Customer service is keen and because of that, we will make delivery arrangements on the buyers who seem
to buy at wholesale level.
On issues of covid-19 health regulations as well as day to day good hygiene practice, we consider practicing
the following;

• Proper hygiene and good bio-security.

• Wearing of masks around and in the premises should be of great importance to everyone. No one should
get entry rights without being checked on the body temperature status.
• Always clean and sanitize before handling the birds. This applies to everyone from the keeper to the buyer.
Having a foot bath with disinfectant at the gate and door of the poultry house is keen to prevent bringing
diseases into the premise and fowl runs.
• Control rats, dogs and cats from accessing the poultry house as they may introduce different diseases.
Fumigation tablets work very well to keep rats away.

6. Project Budget:

We did our cost research for the full project package with the assistance from different layer keepers like
Biyinzika poultry farm. We compared the costs and averaged them to come up with a perfect proposal
budget plan. We included every bit and piece including the following budget assumptions such as;
• All prices are in UGX
• Mortality (death) rate of 5%
• Production period- Layers are purchased mature and ready for production of eggs.
• The poultry structures; for layers are being purchased at a known cost value of UGX 30000 per bird and
we are aiming to start with 600 birds in total.

Note that the numbers tabulated below have been crunched separately so as to clearly dispatch all expenses
clearly and analysis of the profit expectations.

Expenses to start Layer chicken project.

ITEM QUANTITY UNIT COST TOTAL COST
Layer birds 600 30000 18,000,000/$5142.86

Project coordinator time 3 300,000 900,000/$257.14
TOTAL 26,700,000/$7628.57
Also looking at the layers, we can get profits of up to around noticing that in a year one layer
produces 350-450 eggs making 600 layers to produce 240000 eggs a year selling at 500
UGX/$0.14 per egg would generate UGX120,000,000/$34,285.71. It should be noted that the
above expenses are for the first 3 months before the project stabilizes to sustain its self. In a year
we would there for invest a total of UGX 106,800,000/$30,514.29 to get a net profit of
UGX13,200,000/$3771.43 from only egg production. The off layers can be sold at UGX20,000
/$5.71 generating an income of UGX12,000,000/$3428.57. This bring us to a total of UGX
25,200,000/$7200.
Other non-monetary benefit of this project are;
Vulnerable Batwa children will gain skills in poultry keeping.
Improved Feeding in children at the village.
The chicken droppings will be used as fertilizers in the Hope ministries vegetable projects. They
can also be used for bio gas production to generate energy for cooking while sustaining the
environment.
