A. Reviewing previous
An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a
lesson or presenting the
original position / reference point.
new lesson
Motion can be described by measuring the distance between the
initial position and final position of the object.

Displacement is the distance between the object’s initial and final

position.

Velocity is a description of an object’s speed and direction.

Example
A sailboat travelling at 20 kph in a SE direction

The formula in solving:

displacement
velocity=
time

Activity
Directions: Determine the following quantities whether it is
velocity or not.
1. 2 miles per hour
2. 10 kilometers per hour South
3. 3 miles per hour East
4. 8 meters per second
5. 15 meters per second North
Activity Strategy Acceleration is defined as the rate of change in velocity.
The formula is,
change∈velocity
acceleration=
change∈time
velocity f −velocity i
acceleration=
t ime f −t ime i

The unit of acceleration is written as m/s2.

The negative acceleration is called deceleration. Deceleration is

the opposite of acceleration where the velocity of an object
decreases.

Steps in solving acceleration:

Step 1: Identify the given
Step 2: What is asked in the problem?
Step 3: What is the formula to calculate acceleration?
Step 4: Substitute / Change the given values into the formula
Step 5: Solve the problem using the formula.

Example:
A passenger vehicle with a speed of 20 m/s slowed down
to 10 m/s in 10 seconds. What is its acceleration?
Step 1: vi = 20 m/s vf = 10 m/s t = 10 s
Step 2: What is its acceleration?
⃑ ⃑
Step 3: ⃑ v f − vi
a=
t f −t i

Step 4:
m m

⃑ s s
a=

Step 5:

a=−1 m/ s 2

Another Example:

Analysis Video Presentation about Acceleration

Questions:
1. What are the objects doing? Moving
2. If an object is moving, it is called acceleration.
3. Acceleration can be change in speed, direction, or
both.
4. In solving acceleration it must have the following:
Time, Initial and Final Velocity
5. An increase acceleration is called positive acceleration
while a decrease in acceleration is called deceleration.
B. Establishing a purpose Group Activity
for the lesson Directions: Analyze and solve the problem below. Show your
solution.
Abstraction
Problem: A racehorse coming out from the gate accelerates from
rest to a velocity of 15 m/s West in 3 seconds. What is its
acceleration?
Application An object moves from 0 to 10 m/s in 1 second. What is the
acceleration of the object?
Generalization Summary
Acceleration is defined as the rate of change in velocity.
The formula is,
change∈velocity
acceleration=
change∈time
⃑ ⃑
⃑ v f − vi
a=
t f −t i
The unit of acceleration is written as m/s2.
Deceleration is the opposite of acceleration where the velocity of
an object decreases.

Assessment A. Define acceleration. (5 points)

B. Directions: Complete the table by solving the missing values

of the quantities. Write the answers in the blank.
Initial Final Time Acceler
Balls Velocity Velocity (∆t) ation
(m/s) (m/s) (s) (m/s2)
1 10 20 2
2 20 70 5

Assignment Solve for the acceleration. Write it in your science notebook. (10
points)

A motorcycle’s velocity at the top of the hill is 11.0 m/s. 4.0

seconds later it reaches the bottom of the hill with a velocity of
20.0 m/s. What is the acceleration of the motorcycle?
