CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

A cigarette is well-known narrow that contains tobacco and other psychoactive

substances and is very addictive, poisonous and contains about 4000 different chemicals,

many of which are carcinogenic, as well as oxidants like oxygen free radicals, which are

thought to be the primary causes of molecular damage. (Atalla, 2015)

Nature about smoking habits in academic performance cause more than that 7

million students have a low academic performance at 2017.20% of men aged 16 above

smokes compared with 17% of women .In 2015 ,80% of youth ages 12-19 years were

suffering exposure to second hand smoke. Finish statistical show that there are about 20%

smokes daily and 55% had tried smoke. (Gifford, 2012)

However, countries like Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Thailand,

Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Greece, The Netherlands,

New Zealand, Norway, Hungary, The United Kingdom, France, Romania, Singapore, Egypt,

Jordan, Nepal and Turkey have both graphical and text based warning label for cigarettes

(Gilman, 2011)

According to Karma (2020), white smoking rates vary by country, approximately 20%

of the Saudi population smokes. This is also true for teenagers. Tobacco use has been

linked to poor academic performance, including poor concentration and memory function.

Smoking, according to our hypothesis, may be a barrier to optimal learning. The dental

trainees in this study took part in the research. Participants had less education than those

with higher dental

2
school levels. The study discovered that smoking had a negative effect on academic

performance, which was especially strong for students who smoked cigarettes. The smoking

rate in the population was 64.36%. Smoking rates differ by gender, with men smoking more

than women. Female smokers on other hand, are in the minority.

According to Ullan (2019) it is recommended that the university should take action to

make dormitories and common areas smoke free because the growing and troubling

prevalence of smoking among boarder students. For researchers and public health

professionals working in the field of health promotion and education more specifically,

undergraduate students in a multicultural and multi-ethnic nation, this study is highly

significant. This would support the development of fresher, more potent strategies for

enhancing academic performance and quitting smoking.

We the researcher will research the impact of smoking in academic performance in

Grade 12 students. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the effect of cigarette

smoking on the academic performance among students.

3
Statement of the Problem:

This study identifies the impact of smoking to academic performance of Grade 12

students. This intends to answer the following questions.

1. What are the impact of smoking?

2. How do these affect the academic performance?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the effects of smoking to academic

performance of students?

Scope and Delimitations:

This study will be conducted at Taft National High School, students who are smoking

will be the respondents of the study. The purpose of this study is to know the impact of

smoking in student’s academic performance. This study will cover only the Grade 12

student’s participant/respondents of this study. The respondents will be the person who

smokes tobacco regularly.

Significance of the Study:

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of smoking to Grade 12 students

and to their academic performance. On the other hand, this will benefit not just the students

but other stakeholders also to find solutions and interventions to lessen and irradiate this

habit.

Listed below are the audience that could benefits from this study:

Students – They will have more knowledge on the effect of smoking to their academic

performance.

4
Researchers – So they will have an ideas on the effect or impact of smoking in the students’

academic performance.

Parents – They will have a knowledge on the effect of smoking habits on their children’s

academic performance.

Smokers – A person who smokes tobacco regularly.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researchers

considered in strengthening the claim and importance of the present study .This research

was primarily focused on impact of smoking habits in academic performance

Smoking has negative effects on a person health as well as their financial security,

personal life, and well-being of others around them .Almost all of the body organs and

causes sickness and impairment at least 30 person suffer from a major smoking related

illness for every smokers who passes away. Smoking also raises the risk of developing

cancer, heart disease, strike king conditions diabetes (CDC 2014).

The impact of smoking not only immediately affects a young person’s health, but

their future too young smokers are more likely to develop severe levels of nicotine addiction

compared to adults, which leads to continued tobacco use as they grow older nicotine

narrows blood vessels increases blood pressure and puts added strain on the heart this

means shortness of breath asthma and respiratory illnesses not to mention centre and other

chronic diseases .Aside from health effects, there are also many adverse social effects of

smoking ,it can make hair and clothes stink, stain teeth and cause bad breath ,and smokers

tobacco can lead to cracked lips, sores, and bleeding in the mouth. Tobacco (2022)

Students who smoked tend tonged lower average result compared to students who

are non-smoker students that proofs the association between the habit of smoking and the

students’ academic performance’s Atallah (2015)

6
The relationship between cigarette smoking and academic performance

achievement was investigated. It was found that non-smokers received the best grades.

However, there isn’t much evidence linking smoking to failing grades. Our findings imply that

law academic achievers may be more susceptible to smoking, but that smoking is not main

factor influencing academic success. Since there are many other factors that influence the

relationship between academic achievement and smoking. It is not surprising that smoking

behaviour was a little less severe among students with lower academic achievement. There

has to be more research done to determine the exact causes of a lower educational level.

(Mohamed Yaser Kharma et.al. 2016)

Conceptual Framework

Smoking Cigarette Academic Performance

Fig 1: Conceptual Paradigm on the Impact of Smoking Habits in Academic Performance of

Grade 12 Students in Taft National High School

Smoking is negatively associated with academic performance while smoking has

consistently stronger effect on academic performance than cannabis. Students with poorer

grades had greater tendency to smoking than those who had good grades.

7
Hypothesis of the Study:

Null Hypothesis:

There is no significant relationship of cigarette smoking to the academic

performance of the students.

Alternative Hypothesis:

There is a significant relationship of cigarette smoking to the academic

performance of the students

METHODOLOGY

This chapter concentrate on the discussion of the research method and

procedures adhered to by the researchers to answer systematically the specific

problem posed for investigation. Specifically, the research design, respondents of

the study, locale of the study, sampling procedure, instrument of the study, data

gathering procedure, data analysis and ethical consideration were explained in this

chapter.

Research Design

The quantitative research design using descriptive-correlational will be

utilized. A type of research design that aims to obtain information to systematically

describe a phenomenon, situation or population. Voxo (2021).

Respondents of the Study

The primary respondents of this research will be selected 150 grade 12

students who are officially enrolled and currently studying at Taft National High

School.

Locale of the Study

The researcher will conduct this study at Taft National High School specifically

the Senior High School Department. The school is located at Barangay 5, Veteranos

9
St. Taft, Eastern Samar, where the total enrolled student in grade 12 Humanities and

Social Sciences are more than 200 students.

Sampling Procedure

The sampling technique that the researcher used was purposive sampling. A

purposive sampling is a non-probability sampling technique in which respondents are

selected because they have characteristics that you need in your sample. In this

study, selection of participants will be based on the characteristic of the smoking

ability of student.

Instrument of the Study

The data will be collected using the self-made questionnaire that will be

distributed to 150 students. The questionnaire is conducted using statement of the

problem and observations of the researchers. The researchers made a survey

questionnaire to identify the Impact of smoking habits in academic performance in

Grade 12 students at Taft National High School.

Data Gathering Procedure

At first, the researchers made a survey questionnaire to identify the impact of

smoking habits in academic performance of Grade 12 students in Taft National High

School.

10
After the survey questionnaire and the letter approval approved, the

researchers will be conducting a survey questionnaire with the 150 students

personally. When the respondents finished answering the survey questionnaire, the

researchers then collected their finished survey. The researchers then coded the

data and analysed them.

Data Analysis

The researchers will use a descriptive and inferential statistics. As for the

descriptive statistics such as the frequency counts, mean and percentage, it will

determine the level of the variables taken in the study after the data were collected.

We will use excel for interpreting the data. Where in excel we will put table and pie

graph.

Ethical Consideration

The respondents in this study will not be pressured to participate, and the

researchers will ensure that they are fully informed about the study. The researchers will

ensure that the participant’s personal information will be kept private. And all of the data they

will share with them will be reported accurately as accuracy builds credibility. The

participants in the study were given of approval informing them of their right as respondents

in the study and the importance of maintaining confidentiality in all data they provided.
