The Bill of Rights of Filipinos

Critical Thinking

1. What rights are guaranteed (protected) as a citizen and which are important to you?

The freedom of speech and expression are the most fundamental right that all citizens must
have in a democratic state is the right to express oneself and one's opinions. This is important to me
because as a citizen of this country I have the right to tell my thoughts and opinions as long as I know my
limitations and I know that it is for the betterment of the country.

No person shall be held to answer for a criminal offense without due process of law. One of the
most fundamental and important rights that all of us have. It is the “due process” that protect any
defendants from passion and prejudice and to ensure that they are treated in a systematic and fair way
by the government.

No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof. This is important to me because everyone must be free to exercise whatever is their religion, is
free to enjoy and practice their faith without the government interference.

2. What responsibilities came with your rights?

Rights come with responsibilities. Rights do carry a certain amount of responsibility. We are
definitely responsible for our actions. It is irresponsible to say and do things merely because you have
the right to say and do them, particularly when you completely disregard the harm it causes. Rights such
our freedom of speech come along with our responsibility to know when to shut up, especially when it is
used to destroy someone’s reputation. Also, the right to follow our own religion or ideology come along
with our responsibility to use them to unite us, not divide.

3. At what point does the common good of society limit your rights?

The common good of the society, benefits the society as a whole. The “common good” aims for
the betterment of the society. For example, the President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the Philippines
under total lockdown because of the widespread of Covid-19 virus. Total lockdown sought to prevent the
spread of this deadly virus. Individual constitutional rights have been limited by lockdowns nationwide,
individual’s personal freedoms — restricting movement, erasing jobs and punishing anyone who doesn’t
comply, and anyone doesn’t have the right to complain because it is for the common good of the society.
4. Do you think you are a responsible citizen? If so, why? If not, why?

Responsible citizens show respect for the people who live in their community. By following rules
and helping others, responsible citizens make their community a good place to live. I consider myself as a
responsible citizen because I respect and follow the rules of the government. As I know that it is created
to protect the people. I also care for our environment by participating whenever there is a clean-up drive
and by keeping our surroundings clean. I also join some volunteer work in our barangay. I respect other
people’s perspective and principles and of course their religion.

4-6 points Student lists two or three criteria but does not explain accurately and/or clearly and list
one reason why being responsible citizen is necessary to live in a free society but the student does not
explain at all.

1-3 points Student lists only one or two criteria for a responsible citizen and does not explain at all
the importance of responsible citizen to a free society

0 Blank

Criteria 1: Good and Caring Citizen

Reason: A responsible citizen means to be a caring and giving citizen in the community. Being a good
citizen is important in caring for others, respecting the law, protecting the environment and improving
the community. A responsible citizen show camaraderie to those who are down by volunteering and/or
making donations to charities. A responsible citizen stands up for what they consider to wrong and
defend those who cannot defend themselves. A responsible citizen helps other people without any
hesitation. A responsible citizen responsible in paying their taxes and are always stay informed in current
events in his/her country.

Criteria 2. Honest and Trustworthy

Reason: Honesty is the foundation of any well-working relationship. Whether it’s with parents,
friends, or anyone else in the community, honesty is important. No relationship can be successful
without trust, which is gained by honesty. A responsible citizen will always choose what is right and will
always tell the whole truth. A responsible citizen treats people fairly / not taking advantage of people.
He/she will say things that are morally right, he/she will not cheat or steal. He/she will not lie, deceive or
manipulate anybody. A responsible citizen will not formulate lies against anybody, as he/she know that
this can result to destruction of one’s reputation forever. A responsible citizen is sincere and always show
pure intentions. A responsible citizen always want to live peacefully with other people.

Criteria 3. Promotes equality and patriotism

Reason: Patriotism is the feeling of attachment and love to one’s country. A patriot is one who keeps
their country’s flag flying high and showing respect. Love and dedication towards a country is an integral
part in the growth of the nation. A responsible citizen protects and honor his/her country. He/ She also
respects and abide the laws and values of his/her nation. Equality correlates to patriotism. The right to
equality is one of the basic fundamental rights that every Filipino poses. A responsible citizen respect
and treats everyone equally, and set aside their gender, religion, race or values. A responsible citizen also
promotes equal voting right, that everyone is capable of joining the election. Also, showing loyalty
towards the constitution and, donating and giving relief funds during natural disaster to help those in
need is considered as a responsible citizen.

2. Explain one (1) reason why being a responsible citizen is necessary to live in a free society.

Everyone has a duty to be a responsible citizen. But unfortunately, not everyone takes this
responsibility seriously. Many irresponsible citizens take advantage of their rights, their freedom, their
right to own, and many more. Being a responsible citizen is an obligation to every Filipino for it is
necessary to live in a free society. Being a responsible citizen is necessary because it can result into the
success of one’s country. Responsible citizens contribute to the growth and success of the country. As
responsible citizens make significantly higher contributions toward the development of the nation. As
responsible citizen makes positive contributions in the society. As responsible citizen also makes a
contribution in solving national problems. As responsible citizens care for the environment and the
people around them, which then result to happy and harmonious community.

The Basic Values of The Filipinos (Maka-Diyos Cluster)

I. Creatively draw a symbol of the EDSA People Power experience, or a symbol of the success of t EDSA.

II. Reflect further on the symbol drawn by answering the following questions:

1. What does your illustration tell you?

I choose the symbol of a dove as the symbol of the success of EDSA People Power Evolution. As dove
represents peace, the people resort to peaceful way of protest movement to end the Marcos regime.
The great success of EDSA Revolution is that it is a bloodless revolution by non-violent, passive resistance
and mass movement. It was a day that gathered all Filipinos in unity with courage and faith to prevail
democracy in the country. Many people were present, man, woman at any age or religion or jobs
gathered in EDSA. It was the power of the people, who assembled in EDSA, that restored the democratic
Philippines, ending the oppressive Marcos regime.
2. What qualities emerged when we united as a people during our EDSA People Power experience?

EDSA People Power Revolution sure is one of the most unforgettable events in the lives of every
Filipino people. Many years has passed but it is still being celebrated as one of the most significant
events that molded our country into what it is today. The qualities that emerged during the EDSA People
Power Revolution are unity, calmness and faithfulness. Unity, in such a way that every Filipinos who were
looking for change banded together, supported each other and acted as one in order to achieve a
common goal which is to free the country from dictatorship and also to force Marcos out of his seat.
Calmness, people fought for their freedom in a nonviolent and peaceful way. Most especially
faithfulness, this event shows Filipino faith and spirituality when different religions in the country united
in prayer for the success of the revolution.

3. What are effects of faith and prayer in our lives?

Faith and prayers are very essential during these days where all of us are experience
uncertainties. We woke up each day filled with negative emotions; frightened, nervous, worried and
lonely. But because of our faith and prayers we are able to survive each day. Faith and prayers give us
strength and confidence to face our daily challenges, it makes us stronger and also draws us closer to
God.

Do not underestimate the power of prayers. Prayers brings hope that every problem, no matter
how hard it is as long as you surrender it to God, nothing impossible. It is only through prayers and the
faith in God, miracles are possible. Prayers and our faith strengthen our whole wellbeing, giving us the
courage to continue fight for our lives no matter what situation we are in.

4. Do we continue to profess the same faith in God and in appreciate the value of prayer in ordinary
times when there is no conflict or imminent danger to our lives and nation? Explain briefly.

There is this quotation saying, “Pray every day, not only when there is a crisis”. Meaning every
day is considered as a blessing, each morning when we wake up is a blessing, many died during their
sleep, many are sick but God has given us another chance to live so we must be thankful for that. We
should, everyday keep our faith in God for He is our protector, we may not know it but there are times
where He distances us from any harm. Let ’s appreciate and continue our prayers because it is our
only way to communicate with Him. As we pray every day, God will keep us from everything that is bad
and can harm us.

5. Do we give enough time each day to thank God for being faithful to us despite of our unfaithfulness to
Him? Explain briefly.

Yes, because He comforts me during the hardest times in my life and gave the strength and
courage to face every day trial, and despite of my unfaithfulness to Him, I know that God is still faithful to
me and I trust him with my life. He’s the only one who never leave me, listen to my problem, He is
always there to guide me in the right path, always keep my family from any harm and sickness. For these
reasons I thank Him and forever be thankful to Him. Prayers is the only way I can to Him that’s why day
shall pass without me talking and thanking to Him for my everyday blessing, which I am very thankful for,
it is the chance He gave to live another day.

The Basic Values the Filipinos (Maka-kalikasan)

Identify three (3) environmental issues or concerns in your community and determine how NSTP and
student-trainees could address solutions to each.

Environmental issue/concern No1: Waste Segregation and Disposal

Poor knowledge in waste segregation and disposal is a common problem in every community.
This can result to clogged drainage canal, which then result to flooding in low lying areas every rainy
season. Some vendors in our public market dispose their trash in an empty lot or in an abandon house
near the market, and even dispose the fish intestine in the drainage canal. The smell of rotten vegetable,
fish intestines and other biodegradable waste affects the health of many households near the public
market. Poor knowledge and implementation of the Solid Waste Management Act is seen as the reason
behind this.

Proposed Solutions: As a NSTP student, I will make myself as an example, I will start waste management
in our home. I will start with the separation of biodegradable, non-biodegradable, then the hazards and
the ones that can be recycled. I will also create a compost pit. If I have the chance to talk to the Mayor, I
will suggest that he should require business establishments to have 3 dustbins, should also conduct
seminar regarding the implementation of Solid Waste Management to every barangay, the presence of
Material Recovery Facility and engage every people to do recycling and composting in their houses. As of
the problem in our public market, the garbage collectors should collect the waste every 2 days to avoid
the trash being piled up, also the vendors should be responsible of their own garbage, they should close
it tightly in order for it not to be scattered by dogs.

Environmental issue/concern No2: Open Burning and burning of waste in public place (like in school,
public market etc.)

The open burning of household trash directly affects the health and welfare of the people.
Backyard trash burning can trigger certain respiratory ailments, and it is very dangerous to one’s health.
It also produces toxic air directly into the atmosphere that can cause air pollution. This pollution is tough
to track since it is unmonitored and unregulated. Many households in our Barangay sort to this activity
because sometimes garbage collectors are not available. Public places like school and public market
sometimes burn their trash. Many people in our community are not aware that this activity would cause
harm to their health.

Proposed Solutions: As a NSTP student, I would suggest to our local authorities to engage their
constituents to practice recycling and home composting since many household wastes like shampoo
bottles are recyclable. Also, the presence of recycling facilities in our area is also a solution to this issue.
Conducting seminar about the law that prohibits open burning, the effects of open burning on human
health and the environment and the penalties to the violators of this law. Creating an ordinance
regarding the violation of open burning and should impose penalties to the violators, violator should be
given at least 3 warnings. A violator will be fined or charged, be in jail, or do community work.

Environmental issue/concern No3: Smoke Belching

One environmental issue in our barangay is smoke belching. I’ve seen many motors, tricycles,
and other public transport vehicle emit black smoke. Majority of the smoke belchers are the old tricycles
especially those without good maintenance. This is dangerous to health of families living near the public
market since this tricycles park along the pedestrian lane. The smoke was directly inhaled by the families
and the public.

Proposed Solutions: Since, many drivers are unaware of the law that deals with smoke belching, which is
the Republic Act No. 8749, or also known as the Philippine Clean Air Act, I would suggest that the LGU
should strictly implement this law. Also, conducting seminars or information drive (with the help of the
LGU and the department responsible for this) regarding the possible causes and effects of smoke
belching is necessary. I would also them (the tricycle drivers) to perform regular maintenance to their
tricycle as it is seen as one of the causes of smoke belching.

Principles of Leadership

The “Where Am I” tree exercise serves as a guide in determining one’s levels a leader. To choose
one’s desired position will mean how he/she works in order to become very effective in the
implementation of a certain duty. Your location in the tree may help you realize that your potentials may
be enhanced or improved.

As a servant leader, select and color one number that best describes your position. Explain your
answer why you choose such.

As a servant leader, I think I would be in the 5 th stage/position. A servant leader is someone who
is selfless, understanding, is considerate, someone who respect and appreciate his/her subordinates. A
servant leader’s obligation is to help and serve other. I considered myself a leader but not that much of a
servant leader. I experience being a leader when I was elected as one of the officers in our school. I must
say that I enjoyed it, especially when I was able to serve my school and my fellow student by keeping our
school clean, maintaining the peace and order within the campus. Though it is stressful I feel like it is
truly fulfilling. I do believe that I poses some of the characteristics of a servant leader, like I treat my
members equally, I am committed to what I’m doing and I enjoy helping and serving my school. I also
listen to the other officers about their thoughts and suggestions and supports them in decision making. I
choose the fifth stage because I have so many things to work with myself. I choose it because as to what
it seen in the picture the person was climbing the tree in order for him to go up higher, meaning he still
seek for improvements, he works hard for it, and is sure of what he is doing, just like me.
