• It is the art of informing and persuading people through the use of public
speaking skills.
• It means speaking in front of an audience and using high level language skills to
inform, educate and persuade the audience.
• It is defined as a short narrative speech given for a specific audience or event.
• It includes formal speeches such as eulogies, graduation speeches and
inaugural addresses.
Discussion:
Oratorical speech is a short narrative speech which includes the viewpoint of the
speaker given to the audience. It is composed information about the topic and some
persuading words.
Oratorical speech is considered more formal because it includes eulogies, graduation
speech inaugural addresses which are considered as formal events. This speech can
also be informal if it is done in some casual occasions like a toast at a wedding or
parties.
Roles:
• It aims to inform or persuade an audience, in support of a particular viewpoint.
The topic of an oratorical speech can be anything, so long as you are passionate
about it.
Responsibilities:
• As a public speaker, you will be responsible for conducting pre-speech research,
writing and outlining speech scripts, and delivering high-quality speeches to
audiences across the state. You may also be required to answer audience
questions and interact with members of the public.
• To ensure success, you should have excellent verbal communication skills, a
talent for public speaking, and the ability to travel extensively.
Discussion:
Since oratorical speech is all about speaking in public which aims to inform and
persuade its audience, its roles and responsibility should be accordance to the proper
way of giving oratorical speeches. As a public speaker, you need to do your research
before disclosing your viewpoint to the public, it is very important to spice your speech
with facts. In delivering your speech it should be done smoothly from the transition of
words and the words must be spoken clearly.
Importance:
• Oratory skill improves communication skills with others and it also increases skill
at perceiving people’s reactions to your message.
• It helps to make more confident around people automatically and makes them
more comfortable around other people.

skills. Speakers will also gain more confidence in taking in front of an audience.

• Show Respect for Your Audience. If you will be given a chance to speak in
public you will encounter various types of audience, may it be their beliefs,
culture, gender, status, etc., in this cases you need to be cautious of the words
that you will be using to avoid miscommunication to your audience and aside
from this it also shows respect to the diversity of your audience.
• Respect Your Audience’s Time. Follow an outline so that only the most
relevant topic will be tackled to avoid mishaps with the time.
• Prepare Your Speech. One of the way to deliver your speech is to prepared it
beforehand, understand and memorize if possible the highlights of your topic.
• Be Honest and Don’t Mislead Your Audience. In giving your speech you need
to be honest about the information that you will disseminate. Fake news or fake
information can mislead your audience.
• Avoid Plagiarism. Plagiarism is a crime. You need to make of your own speech
to educate or inform or persuade your audience and your need to give proper
credits for references to some of your ideas and words.
• Ensure Your Objective Is Ethical. In planning a speech you need to ensure that
the objectives of your speech are considered ethical.
• Be Yourself. In giving your speech you need to always remember to be more
relax and being true to yourself.
III. Importance of Confidence

 Confidence may help you speak with more clarity and authority.
 Confidence reflects on how you carry yourself, body posture, gestures, eye
contact, etc.
Note: It’s important to be confident during a presentation to ensure you give the best
presentation possible.

Having a confidence in delivering speeches plays a vital role in the whole performance.

audiences better understand and respond to your message. You can enhance your
confidence by practicing and having a long preparation before delivering your speech.

IV. Preparing and Delivering a Speech Student Checklist

1. Choose a topic both you and your audience will like. Make sure that it fits to
the theme or the occasion where you will deliver the speech. You also need to
consider your audience since the main purpose of delivering your speech is to
inform, persuade or inspire your listeners.
2. Make sure your topic fits the assignment and time limit. You don’t need to
make you’re a speech a very long, that your listeners will be bored while listening
to you.
3. Do a good job of thinking about and researching your topic. You have to find
many sources of information for you to have many bases. Research in different
online platforms.
4. Think about the topic information you have gathered and use only the
details which will work well for you. Filter out the gathered information and
include only the relevant to your topic.
5. Write an introduction which will gain the interest of your audience as well
as introduce your topic. Develop a strong opening to get your audience’s
attention immediately and make a good first impression. Consider opening with a
personal story, startling statistic or a funny quotation or joke.
6. Don’t rush! Make sure everything you say is clear and understandable.
Pronounce every word clearly and precisely so that all the audiences can
understand you.
7. Speak loudly enough so that everyone can hear you.
8. Keep proper posture; hand gestures, feet on the floor, eye contact, etc.
9. Look at your audience as you speak. Maintain eye contact the whole time so
you can connect with your audience.
10. End with a strong, interesting idea. You can highlight the important ideas or
lessons in your speech and state a quotes before you finish
