RAIN ON THE ROOF -Coates Kinney

THEME
The theme of the poem is the healing power of rain. The musical sound of raindrops falling on the
rooftop at night has the ability to revive sweet memories and rouse fancies in an otherwise busy
mind. The rain thus soothes and comforts an overworked mind by taking it back to its lovely past.
Some of our best memories in life are associated with rain.
POETIC DEVICES
STANZA 1
1. Alliteration: The repetition of a consonant sound in two or more consecutive words.
* Humid Hover, starry spheres, press pillow, lie listening
2. Onomatopoeia: The use of sound words to create a dramatic effect and auditory imagery.
‘Patter’ is the use of sound word. It is the sound made by the rain drops falling on the roof top.
3. Personification: Treating a non – living thing as a living being.
‘Darkness’ has been personified when he says that it is sad.
4. Transferred Epithet: The use of an adjective with a noun when it refers to another noun.
In ‘melancholy darkness’, the darkness is not melancholy, but it refers to the sad people.

STANZA 2

2. Onomatopoeia:  The use of sound words to create a dramatic effect and auditory imagery.
‘tinkle’, ‘patter’ – sounds made by the raindrops

‘Recollection’ is personified when he says that they weave dreams.
4. Transferred Epithet: The use of an adjective with a noun when it refers to another noun.
‘dreamy fancies’ – it does not mean that the fancies are dreamy but refers to  the people who
have dreams

‘patter’ – sound of raindrops falling on the shingles of the roof

listening to the music of the rain. The music stirs - corresponding echo in the heart of the poet
-rhythmic throbbing- gets engrossed in fanciful, dreamy thoughts-rain awakens many memories of
the past- revives the memory of his mother as she looked at her children very
affectionately-recollects the fond, affectionate look of his mother which she cast on him- poet’s
mind and heart respond sensitively to the soft pattering sound of the rain falling on the roof.
