Statement of Purpose

Self Introduction:
I began treading the road toward attainting my goals when I joined a law school, about five years
ago. Studying law and eventually practising it is my only and ultimate aim, my passion. To
successfully realise my ambitions, I believe there is no better way than enriching my knowledge
by pursuing an advanced or higher degree in law.

Coming from a family steeped in law, with the majority of my family members either practising
law or engaged as legal experts, I sincerely believe that law runs in my blood. With an
overwhelming exposure to this fascinating and interesting field since childhood, my only
ambition has been to study law, make a niche for myself, and overhaul the benchmark set by my
father in this competitive field.

I am not someone who takes or accepts things as they come; rather I belong to the school of
thought that has taught me to believe that everyone has a unique attribute that helps us foresee
what destiny has in store for us, so that we can make the necessary changes when it matters and,
in the process of doing so, attain our goals and be at the place where we have always wanted to
be.

I have always been interested in business laws, which include the Indian Contract and
Companies Act, among others, and I have gained knowledge and conducted in-depth research on
these topics. Hence, I want to pursue an advanced degree in international business law.

I am an effective, dedicated, and cooperative team member, and have always worked in
conjunction, building productive relationships, with my team members—be it for a moot court
competition or a non-governmental social services campaign representing our law school—
which has always helped making our projects a success.

Family Background:
As already aforementioned, I come from a family of eminent lawyers and judges and I draw a
great deal of inspiration from my grandfather who was the acting Chief Justice of the Orissa
High Court and my father who is, at present, a designated Senior Advocate of the Orissa High
Court, Orissa.

My father, particularly, has been my role model, playing a powerful and influential role in my
life, since my childhood. Hardworking, dedicated, ethical, principled, a thorough professional
and perfectionist, he is an epitome of success and my constant source of support and strength, a
person who I admire, revere, and relentlessly depended on for every dilemma I have encountered
in my life, academically and otherwise.

Educational background/English proficiency:

I have demonstrated my excellent English skills, oral and written, both as a student and a
professional. English has been and is the only official language used by all academic institutions
and professional bodies. This factor coupled with my love for the language has helped me in
grasping a strong command over it. I have always taken the podium in essay writings and
debates and possess a keen never-ending appetite for the language and vocabulary.

I completed my I.C.S.E (The Council for Indian School Certificate Examination) from Stewart
School, Orissa in 2002 and my C.H.S.E (The Council for Higher Secondary Education) from
Ravenshaw Junior College, Orissa in 2004. Thereafter, I successfully completed my B.A.LL.B
(Honours) at Madhusudan Law College, a premier law institution in Orissa, in 2009. It is
pertinent to clarify that the medium of instruction at all the aforementioned educational
institutions is only English.

Though it is normal to be confused and face indecisiveness with regard to taking up decisions in
the academic life, I can sincerely state that I have always been extremely focussed, undeterred,
and clear regarding what I wanted in life. I have always wanted to study law and establish myself
as a competent and successful lawyer like my father.

The only instance of a weak academic performance is my C.H.S.E, where I secured a second
division. However, at the end of the day, I believe what matters is how well we learn from our
mistakes and try making things better from that point. This was my stepping stone to success. I
learned from my mistake and today, I can proudly state that this weak performance transformed
me into a determined, dedicated, and ambitious person and motivated me to attain outstanding
academic results in my law school.

Besides, as a student, I have actively participated and have won many awards for outstanding
performances and achievements in moot courts and projects during the last five years at the law
school. Some of the awards I was honoured with include ‘the best debutant mooter of the
college’, ‘the best mooter of the college’ on two occasions, ‘the best memorial submitted’, and
‘the best researcher’. In addition, I have been awarded runners up awards and participation
certificates for my ability to work in a team of mooters at the state and inter-college moot courts.

Further, I have also volunteered and worked as research agents of my professors at the law
college, finding out important and relevant case laws and Supreme Court’s findings on their
subjects of expertise.

I have also interned at one of the country’s best law firms K.K. Venugopal, Senior Advocate,
Supreme Court of India and Associates, where I earned praises for my research abilities and
undying dedication and passion toward my work. In addition, I have been a regular intern in my
father’s firm as well, which has helped me in successfully completing many my important
projects at law school.

I have also undertaken research work on projects relating to topics covered under the
Constitution of India, Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, Indian Contract,
Companies Act, and Code of Civil Procedure, which has helped me gain considerable knowledge
and skills of interpretation and implementation of the provisions in Statutes.
Employment History:
After enrolling myself as an Advocate at the Orissa High Court Bar Association (which is a
mandatory requirement before a fresh graduate can begin work) in September 2009, I began
work in a litigation firm Surya Prasad Misra, Senior Advocate and Associates, a firm owned by
my father, as an Associate.

Since associates are chosen after meeting certain compulsory guidelines and requirements as
outlined by the firm, I could get into the firm only after satisfactorily completing the
requirements of Surya Prasad Misra, Senior Advocate and Associates firm. This firm,
spearheaded by Mr. Surya Prasad Misra, Senior Advocate, boasts of a team of highly capable
advocates of the Orissa High Court Bar Association. The firm also has alliance with eminent
Advocates on records and Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court of India for casework and
argumentation purposes.

As an associate, I deal and liaise with clients, attend conferences, make notes of the important
points in a specific case before the same can be forwarded to my Senior, and drafting and
arguing cases in the High Court and the various Tribunals.

During my short span as an associate at the aforementioned firm, I have earned a few credentials.
In recognition of my earning an almost 90% success rate in admitting fresh cases in the High
Court of Orissa, I have been entrusted with work relating to cases that require an immense and
in-depth knowledge on the subject and intelligence to implement the correct provisions as
outlined in the Statutes. I also have assisted my senior in various Arbitration matters and cases
relating to Companies, where I have had to deal with the point of laws, which also require a
detailed research.

I want to pursue a master’s degree, as it will not only widen my scope on the subject of law but
also give me a more detailed knowledge and expertise relating to a particular field of law, that is,
business law.

Career Goals:
A multitude of factors have influenced my decision to pursue higher education in the UK.

First, I believe the expertise of the excellent academic faculty is perfectly suited to the nature of
the course that I propose to study. Pursuing a higher or advanced degree in law is challenging
and difficult, taking into account the vastness of the program, and hence, I want to study under
the supervision and expertise of the expert law faculty members who will help me to gain an
international perspective, besides broadening and enriching my knowledge in law.

Second, the duration of the course in India and the UK is different. Although the program I want
to apply for is available in India, its duration is two years instead of a year as in the UK. I believe
that in today’s world, time is precious as gold, and no one can ill afford to let it go waste. I would
rather undertake a more intensive program, study, and successfully complete it in a year’s time
and enter the professional arena of law than study the same program for two years.
Third, I sincerely think that the idea of being ‘a big fish in a small pond’ has died since long and
I want to further this concept by setting an ambitious yet realistic goal in expanding my father’s
law firm on a national scale across the country of India and thereby, increasing our alliances with
advocates and firms dealing in different fields of law. Working together with their expertise will
not only result in giving our clients efficacious forms of remedies but will also help in our firm
gaining a wider perspective.

I realise the nature of my aims and goals requires me to equip myself very well with the subject
as a whole and I strongly believe that my choice to pursue LLM in the UK will put in a very
good stead for my future endeavours.

I want to return to my country of origin, India, upon the completion of my studies, to work in my
father’s litigation firm as an Advocate in order to accomplish my established and definite goals
as elaborated in the previous paragraphs.

Conclusion: You can conclude by stating that you are confident that you met all the pre-
requisites to complete the course successfully in UK and you are looking forward to a
bright future if given the opportunity to study at their university

I am hardworking, dedicated, and very passionate toward my studies and work, striving for
achieving success in all projects I undertake. My commitment, strong research skills, ability to
grasp new information, high proficiency in English, both oral and written skills, ability to work
as an effective team player together with my desire to broaden my knowledge in a world-
renowned university will definitely help me in being an excellent student in the UK.

Hence, I believe I possess the pre-requisites to complete the law course in the UK, and am
certain that I will gain a truly exceptional, excellent, and first-class educational experience and a
bright future if I am given the opportunity to study at a university in the UK.
