1. SCOPE
Marking of parts made for automotive is defined by this specification.
On the basis of homogeneous material, plastic parts having a weight of more than 50 grams and
rubber parts having a weight of more than 100 grams must be marked and those below 50 grams and
100 grams are marked if possible.

2. PURPOSE
The purpose of this specification is to avoid different material designation for same materials, to
facilitate separation of materials intended for recycling and disposal by enlarging identification of
materials at the stage of end of life vehicle treatment and to promote effectiveness of material
treatment process.

3. APPLICATION
This specification is used as marking method of parts of materials for

manufacturing automotive components or as specified on Engineering Drawings.

4. MARKING METHOD

4.1 Construction of Marking (See Table 1)

SYMBOL : See 4.4 ① , ② : See 5.8

4.2 Location and Methods of Marking

4.2.1 The designation should be placed in such a way that it can easily be read from
a removed part and separated materials.
4.2.2 When parts consist of several pieces, each piece separable from parts should be
marked.
4.2.3 In case of compound assemblies, the individual designation of parts should be
located in front of the material symbols (see 4.4) and markings are located all
together at the place where is easy to identify. Example of compound assemblies :
INSTRUMENT PANEL, DOOR TRIM PANEL, HEAD & REAR COMBINATION LAMP, FLOOR
CARPET, HEAD
LINING, LUGGAGE SIDE TRIM, TRUNK MAT, COVERING SHELF, REAR PACKAGE TRAY
etc.
4.2.4 In case of parts consist of more than two materials, all plastics above 50 grams
and all rubbers above 100 grams must be marked individually.
4.2.5 In case of long or wide parts same as WEATHER STRIP or BUMPER COVER, markings are
located on many places to facilitate identification.
4.2.6 Marking must be located suitable place using optimum methods to avoid difficulties
for identification by friction, contamination.
Marking must be easily identified at the stage of end of life vehicle.
4.2.7 Marking, principally, should be carved (embossment, intaglio) on mold. If not
possible, it could be replaced with printing(including laser point print), seal
adhesion, tag attachment and so forth.
4.2.8 Marking shall be used in conjunction with other part identifications, i.e., part
number, maker, date of manufacture, etc.

4.3.4 For large parts, it is acceptable to use a larger symbol than preferred size up to
5 times.
