material is used for the accessories? A diamond

may crack ( though this is the hardest mineral
and very difficult to crack) while silver and gold
will not. Gold and silver are malleable. Recall
the properties of metals
Metals - what properties are common to the
metals iron , copper, aluminum silver and gold?
All metals are solid at room temperature except
are solid at room temperature except mercury,
which is a liquid. Gold, silver, and platinum are
made into jewelry because of their luster,
ductility, and malleability.cooking wares are
made from metals because they are malleable
and are good conductors of heat. Copper is made
into electrical wire because it is ductile and a
materials made of metals are shown

Non metals - what happens when you hammer

charcoal? It breaks charcoal is a non metal and
all metals in solid from break or are brittle. Non
metals exist in three phases: solid like iodine and
sulfur, liquid like bromine and gas like hydrogen
and oxygen. Do you know why pot and pan
handles are made either thermoset plastic or
wood ? they are not conductor of heat they are
made of metals.

Metalloid - sometimes an elements may

behave like a metal and at times like non meta. It
could be described as a semi - metal. We refer to
this element as a metalloid look at the periodic
table. The metalloid metals are located along the
line between the metals and non metals. The
metalloid are boron, silicon germanium , arsenic,
antimony, and tellurium. Polonium is often
considered a metalloid too. The metalloid exhibit
characteristics of both metals and non metals,.
silicon for example posses a metallic luster yet it
is an inefficient conductor and is brittle. The
reactivity of the metalloid depends on the
elements with which they are reacting. For

example, boron acts as a nonmetal when reacting

fluorine. The boiling point, melting points, and
densities of the metalloid they tend to make good
semiconductors. The more popular examples of a
metalloid is silicon. On earths crust silicon of the
second most abundant element after oxygen
making up 28% of the crust by mass. Silicon
forms useful glasses, cement and ceramics in the
form of silica and silicates found in sand. It is
also a consistent of silicon a class name for
various synthetic plastics substances made of
silicon, oxygen, carbon and hydrogen.

A metal is a kind of element that is shiny solid,

malleable, ductile and a good conductor of heat
and electricity,
A metalloid is a kind of element that behaves
like a metal and sometimes a non metal
depending on the condition
Non metals is a kind of element that is usually
dull, brittle, non a nonconductor of heat and
electricity.

ELABORATE Teacher give another activity about metal and

non metals. The students will complete the table
below.

What are the importance of metals and non Some importance of

metals? metals in our daily life
are: Due to their thermal
and electrical
conductivity, metals are
use to make utensils,
cooking vessels, wires
and appliances. For
example, copper and
aluminium are mainly
used for these purposes.
EVALUATION

aluminium are responsible for the same?

A. Good thermal conductivity
B. Good electrical conductivity
C. Ductility
D. High melting point

2. Due to their semiconductor properties the non-

metals used in computers, T.V. etc. are
A. Carbon C. Silicon
B. Bromine D. Fluorine
 3. An alloy reacted with dilute hydrochloric acid
to produce a gas which ‘pops’ a lighted splint.
The residue reacted with dilute nitric acid to
form a blue solution. Which one of the following
pairs of metals is present in the alloy?
A. Copper and lead
B. Lead and magnesium
C. Lead and zinc

4. The most abundant metal in the earth’s crust is
A. Aluminium C. Calcium
B. Iron D. Sodium
5. Amalgam is an alloy of
A. Mercury
B. Copper and Tin
C. Lead and Tin

EXTEND Show on your vlog some examples of metals,
non metal and metalloid that you may found in
your home.
