1ST QUARTER
DATE:
TEACHER:
TIME:
GRADE AND SECTION:

I. OBJECTIVE
Content Standard : The relationship among the locations of volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and mountain ranges
Learning Competency: Describe and relate the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters and major mountain belts to Plate Tectonic Theory
At the end of the lesson, all of the learners should be able to:
1. Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake epicenter and major mountain
belts; and
2. Determine the scientific basis for dividing the lithospheric plates.
3. Generalize the importance for us to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Quarter 1 – PLATE TECTONICS | Plate Boundaries

KBI: Generalize the importance for us to identify areas which are prone
III. to earthquakes LEARNING

Good afternoon class
Checking of Cleanliness and Attendance
Before you take your sit, please pick up the pieces of papers on the floor.
Is there any absent for today’s class?
DRILL/ELICIT
Students will present their assignment “jingle” about their learnings of the theories discussed
namely the continental drift theory, the seafloor spreading and the plate tectonics theory.
ENGAGE
They will guess the word and describe what it is.
1. Plee ate tiktok knicks
2. Sea flour spray ding

Students will be group into 6. Afterwards, they are to answer the guide questions provided.
Two groups will work for each tracing activity.
ACTIVITY: Let’s Mark the Boundaries
Tracing a map of earthquake distribution
Guide Questions:
1. How are earthquakes distributed on the map?
2. Where are they located?
3. Where are there no earthquakes?
4. Why is it important for us to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes?
Tracing a map of active volcanoes
Guide Questions:
1. How are volcanoes distributed?
2. Where are they located?
3. Based on the map, mention a country that is unlikely to experience a volcanic eruption.
4. Compare the location of majority of earthquake epicenters with the location of volcanoes
around the world.
Tracing a map of the mountain ranges of the world
Guide Question:
1. How are mountain ranges distributed?
2. Mention a country where mountain ranges are dominated.
3. How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the distribution of
earthquake epicenters and volcanoes?
4. What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing Earth’s lithosphere into several
plates?

EXPLAIN
1. How are earthquake’s epicenter, volcano and mountain ranges distributed?
2. What do you think is the basis of scientists in dividing Earth’s lithosphere into several
plates?
3. How are we going to relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the distribution of
earthquake epicenters and volcanoes?
ELABORATE
After the discussion relate the lesson to real life situations and ask if what other areas can the
learners apply their learnings.
1. How are you going to apply your knowledge about plate tectonics and the boundaries to
other subject or learning area?
EVALUATE
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answers on a separate
sheet of paper.
1. Why do earthquakes usually occur at plate boundaries?
a. The rock on the edges of tectonic plates is soft and gives in easily to various pressures
b. Rock in environments near tectonic plate boundaries experience great stress
c. The boundaries between tectonic plates have been seismically active for millions of years
d. Rocking environments near tectonic plate boundaries experience little stress
2. A break in the rock of the crust where rock surfaces slip past each other; usually occur

3. A map of global earthquakes and volcanoes tells you.
a. Where the edges of the continents are. b. Where the earth is the hottest.
c. Where the plate boundaries are. d. Nothing, it looks random.
4. If you visit a place in the Pacific known to be along convergent plates, which of these should
you NOT expect to see?
a. Active volcanoes b. Mountain ranges
c. Rift valleys d. Volcanic islands
5. When two continental plates pull apart, a is formed.
a. Subduction Zone b. Mountain Range
c. Earthquake d. Rift Valley
EXTEND
Write a 150-word story about describing the disaster that would occur in the aftermath of a
fictitious volcanic eruption. Make your story as descriptive as you can.
Use a separate sheet of paper for your story.
