OLD DOMINION ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Co-host of the 2011 NCAA Division III Softball Championship finals

urrently celebrating its 35th year of operation, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nations largest
Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC,
including Catholic U niversitys associate status,
stands as the second-largest multi-spor t N CAA
Division III conference in the country.
The league was formed May 18, 1975, as the
Virginia College Conference and began operations
in September 1976. (The name change to ODAC
became effective January 1, 1976.) Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of
Virginia: Bridgewater College (Virginia), Eastern
Mennonite University, Emory and Henry College,
Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College,

Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and

Washington and Lee University.
From its initial year of operation through the
1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored
competition in 10 mens varsity sports, including
football, soccer and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the
winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track
and field in the spring. Womens sports were added
before the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC
has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports.
The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early
1990s, and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan College became the 13th ODAC member in
1988 and began full-scale competition in the league

in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College,

voted into the conference in the spring of 1990,
began competing for conference championships in
the 1991-92 season. Catholic University was
accepted for football-only membership by the
league in January 1999 and won the conference
championship that fall.
In the past 19 years, the conference and the city of
Salem, Virginia, have gained national attention
through hosting Division III championships in football, mens basketball, baseball, softball, womens
lacrosse and womens volleyball. The 1993 Division
III Football Championship was the first title passed
out in Salem. That event marked the first of more than
60 NCAA championships awarded in Salem to date.

CAA President Mark A. Emmert assumed his new duties October 1. Before that, he most recently served as the president of the University of Washington. A career educator, the NCAAs fifth
chief executive said protecting the collegiate model of athletics in financially challenging times
and making sure the NCAA is student-centered will be among his immediate areas of focus. He also plans
to rely heavily on campus presidential leadership to help him achieve his goals.

Q:
A:

As the NCAAs new president, what are your

priorities for the organization?
Collegiate athletics must r emain an integral
part of higher education. We shouldnt talk
about athletics and academics as separate
entities but rather as par t of the whole academic experience. This means focusing on

the holistic development of our student-athletes and making their well-being a top priority. From a r evenue perspective, we need to
find the right balance of generating the necessary dollars and being diligent about the r ole
commercialism plays. We also must make
sure we spend the dollars for the benefit of

the student-athlete. Finally, we have to reinforce that fairness and integrity form the
bedrock of the enterprise.

Q:
A:

How are student-athletes doing in the

classroom?
First, let me say everything we do in intercollegiate athletics must be driven by an overriding commitment to the academic success of
our student-athletes. I n the end, ev eryone
wins if w e educate student-athletes to the
point that they ar e successful in life. With
that, I am happy to report student-athletes do
an outstanding job in the classr oom. For
example, the 2010 D ivision I multiy ear
Academic Performance Rate of 967 is thr ee
points higher than the 2009 figur
es.
Statistically, that is an amazing jump and took

a lot of hard work by everyone involved, especially our student-athletes. It proves how seriously our members take their commitment to
academics. And it is a tribute to my predecessor, Myles Brand, who did so much to change
the culture surrounding the educational
aspects of college sports.

Q:
A:

Can you elaborate a little more on the concept

of student-athlete well-being?
Student-athlete well-being is at the cor e of
our mission. We are charged to ensur e
intercollegiate athletics is conducted in
ways that protect and enhance the physical,
educational and social characteristics of our
student-athletes. We need to dev elop student-athletes for success. We do that b y
helping them earn a worthwhile education,
compete safely, and grow holistically while
on campus.

Q:
A:

What are your thoughts on the rising costs of

college sports and the role of commercialism?
College sports cannot operate without
commercial support. The N CAA has 25
years of data pr oving athletics self-sustainment is vir tually impossible for the v ast
majority of its schools. In fact, only about a
dozen or so D ivision I athletics pr ograms
are self-sustaining. The truth is it is a good
thing to hav e more resources, if y ou are
using them corr ectly. Most athletics business plans closely mirr or the business
model of the univ ersity. Every university
seeks to maximize revenue before redistrib-

uting it to support its educational mission.
Putting it all together , we have multiple
challenges. First, we have to make sur e
enough is generated. N ext, we have to
make sure it is used to complement the
overall educational mission of inter collegiate athletics. Finally, we need to be mindful of the impact that r evenue generation
can have on competitive equity.

Q:
A:

What does the N CAA do with the mone y it

generates?
Approximately 96 per cent of our generated
revenue supports student-athletes thr ough
distributions, programs or championships.
Since signing our ne w media rights contract
with Turner Broadcasting and CBS, w e have
established a committee to review the current
model and make recommended changes.

ELITE 88
Honoring exceptional student-athletes

88

NCAAs elite
elicit academic
accolades

By Michelle Brutlag Hosick

Reprinted from Champion Magazine

essica Ubanyionwu is nothing like the caricature of a single-minded, focused-on-athletics Division I student- athlete. Invited to
the Division I 2010 I ndoor Track and F ield
Championships (where she placed 16th in the
triple jump), U banyionwu views her athletics
participation as simply a vehicle to get her where
she really wants to go: medical school.
Im so into my academics, I try to deal with
the fact that Im in sports, too, said the Baylor
student-athlete. My academics are a big focus
in my life. I m not going to go pr o in spor ts.
Academics is my Plan A, not sports.
Ubanyionwus dedication to her schoolwor k
and talent in the triple jump combined to earn
her one of the first N CAA E lite 88 A wards.
Created to recognize student-athletes who reach
the national championship in their spor t while
also achieving the highest academic standar d
among their peers, the awards honored 88 individuals one at ev ery N CAA championship
for the first time in 2009-10.
These exceptional young men and women
come from diverse backgrounds, but they all
have one thing in common: a commitment to
excellence in the classr oom and in competition, said Joni Comstock, N CAA senior vice
president for championships.
The Elite 88 Award program worked just as
Erin OConnell, athletics dir ector at S eattle
Pacific and a member of the committee that
helped create the award, planned especially
since Seattle Pacifics Suzie Strickler won the

NCAA.com

award at the D ivision II

Womens Cross Country
Championships.
Shes a great depiction of
somebody who should be winning the awar d,
OConnell said of Strickler. Shes a very intelligent, driven individual. Its prestigious for any
institution and individual to win.
Strickler said her secret to being successful in
academics and athletics is to enjo y what she s
doing while shes doing it.
An exercise science major with a 4.0 gradepoint average, Strickler isnt sure what she s
going to do after graduation, though the medical field appeals to her.
Igor Martinez, a civil engineering major with
a 4.0 GPA at Norwich, isnt sure what hes going
to do when he graduates, either . Martinez won
the Elite 88 Award at the Division III Mens Ice
Hockey Championship.
I was more shocked than anything else, he
said. I didnt think it would be me.
Martinezs secret?
You can always wor k hard and be serious,
he said. But youve got to take time to have fun
with your teammates.
Getting to the championship was an enormous accomplishment, but sharing it with his
teammates was what made it special.
The Elite 88 was a bonus, as it was for most
of the r ecipients in the awar ds inaugural y ear
who happen to be going pro in something other
than sports.
