Bibliomaniacs, c/o Anthony Zhang, Papplewick, Ascot, as well as in person. Orders
will be prioritised strictly by time of receipt. Books remain the property of the Bib-
liomaniacs until the full amount is paid.

SUPPLY AND RETURN


Books reserved will be posted the day after full payment is processed. The Pap-
plewick Bibliomaniacs have the right to withdraw books from sale without any giv-
en reason. Sales are non-refundable, unless the book is proved to be otherwise as
described. The code name for this catalogue is Pirates, thus Pirates 3, would mean
“please reserve for me item 3 from the Gilbert and Sullivan catalogue”.
DELIVERY OF GOODS
Books should preferably be collected in person at a time
mutually agreed. Postage and packing will be at cost.

PAYMENT
Goods should preferably be paid for by bank transfer with details provided
with invoice. Personal UK cheques made out to Jonathan Cooper will also
be accepted. Proceeds will benefit the Bibliomaniac Society. The Biblioma-
niacs support the Woodland Trust and are trustees of three quarters of an
acre of Bisham Woods, Berkshire. They also raise money for the Oxford
Children’s Hospice.

The Bibliomaniacs are the youngest


antiquarian booksellers in the world. We meet
every Thursday to discuss recent book sales, and
to discover more about the history of literature,
books and printing. The Bibliomaniacs feel
honoured to have been elected members of the
PBFA in 2016, and have exhibited at the London
International Premier Book Fair in 2016, 2017,
2018 and 2019.

found]. 30 pp., with drawings by Anne and Janet Grahame Johnstone,
black hardback, with white lettering. Picture of ‘The Pirate King’ on front
middle cover. This book has numerous great illustrations and story telling
of the story, and is very engaging as well.

of Sir William Gilbert as the frontispiece. Sticker of ‘Foyles’ on first page,
as well as some writing from ‘20/9/14’. This is the copy on the right. Very
Good condition

1914. 443 pp. Green cloth, indented lettering with no colour to front cover,
gold lettering to spine. (Symbol of something) to middle front cover. Spine
faded. Marks on front and rear boards, as well as spine. Pages very lightly
foxed. Also has 63 portrait and other illustrations and 6 facsimile letters
contained within it. Good condition.

A rather controversial book among G and S fans when it came out.

cover and spine. Slight damage to corners and spine, light foxing light
markings to cover and back.

Written not long after Sullivan’s death by a great admirer.

Very nice period-style illustrations throughout.

1947. 1st edition Dust jacket. Bound in red cloth on red boards. 21 illustra-
tions. Black writing to spine 160pp 129x191mm. Good condition. Damaged
corners of dust jacket, light foxing.

11. Gilbert, W. S. and Arthur Sullivan. Poor Wand’ring
One, Song, in the Comic Opera The Pirates of Penzance.
Chappell, [1904], 305 x 247mm., 8pp. plus wrappers, spine
taped, edges ragged with small tears.
Provenance: Elgar & Co., piano sellers, High Street, Worces-
ter. The future composer, Edward Elgar, as a young man, was
an apprentice in this shop. This was all well before the printing
of this particular copy of Poor W and’ring One, but 1904 was
auspicious for Elgar as it was in this year that he was knighted
A very rare survival. An individual song from The Pirates of
Penzance designed for performance in a domestic environment
or in small-scale amateur concerts. Most of such items were
ultimately worn out and discarded. Some were bound up into
volumes of miscellaneous songs but Gilbert and Sullivan
items, always popular, rarely made it so far.

CA company in association with the D’Oyly Carte compa-
ny[1950]. 33 1/2 RPM long playing. Cover slightly dam-
aged at corner. A classic recording from 1949 with Martyn
Green as The Major General and Darrell Fancourt as The
Pirate King. For the set. £5.00

Faber and Faber, 2000. Bound in purple card illustrations
to front board and white lettering to cover, illustration to
cover and photograph to back. Very good condition, scuf-
fling on cover 189x245mm 153 photos throughout the book
including letters and art. Inside book contain many pieces
of newspaper cuttings about Gilbert and Sullivan predating
the book. £6.00

A collection of numerous Victorian songs in sheet mu-
sic form. Numbers include ‘The Perfect Life’ and

A RARE ORIGINAL ADVERTISINBG POSTER
27. THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Stafford & Co., [1920s], single pr inted sheet c. 760 x 510mm. in excel-
lent condition, framed and glazed.
A fine example of what is known as a “stock poster”. For the most popular G & S operas, Stafford produced one or
two images which could then be printed upon again by different amateur companies giving details of their specific
productions. This is the finer of the two images from Pirates with an evocative image of the Sergeant of Police with
“danger near” in the forms of the Pirate King and Samuel.
