WEEK 11

DEFINE WHAT ENVIRONMENT HAZARD IS

• Environmental Hazard-It is a substance that has the ability to cause an adverse health event.
Physical and chemical factors- It can be natural and human-made
• e.g
• 1. Natural Disasters
• 2. Synthetic chemicals we produce
• 3. Pollutions
• 4. Climate change
• 5. Contamination
8 ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT HEALTH
1.Chemical safety
2.Air pollution
3.Climate change and natural disasters
4.Diseases caused by microbes
5.Lack of access to health care
6.Infrastructure issues
7.Poor water quality
8.Global environmental issues
DESCRIBE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GROWING
POPULATION WITH THE INCREASING THREATS OF
HEALTH, BIOLOGICAL,AND CHEMICAL HAZARDS.
• Like water and air pollution, extreme weather, or chemical exposures—can affect human health in a number of ways,
from contributing to chronic diseases like cancer or to acute illnesses like heat exhaustion. Human exposure to
hazardous chemicals can occur at the source or the chemical could move to a place where people can come into
contact with it. Chemicals can move through air, soil, and water. They can also be on plants or animals, and can get into
the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink.
• organ damage

• weakening of the immune system

• development of allergies or asthma

• reproductive problems and birth defects

• effects on the mental, intellectual or physical development of children

• cancer
Health hazards associated with population growth include emerging and re-emerging diseases,
poor vector control, poor sanitation, water and food contamination, air pollution, and natural
disasters
IDENTIFY THE RISKS POSED BY HEALTH,
BIOLOGICAL, AND CHEMICAL HAZARDS
• Biological Health Hazards
Biological health hazards include bacteria, viruses, parasites and moulds or fungi. They can pose a
threat to human health when they are inhaled, eaten or come in contact with skin. They can
cause illness such as food poisoning, tetanus, respiratory infections or parasite infection. We
provide expertise and resources on monitoring and controlling biological hazards that are
transmitted through food, air or water.
• Exposure and health effects of chemicals
Every day, we are exposed to chemicals and pollutants – in our air, food and water. There are
chemicals in everyday products we use at work, at home and at play. While some chemicals may
be beneficial to our health, others may pose a health risk if they’re not handled properly.
IDENTIFY THE VARIOUS HEALTH, BIOLOGICAL AND
CHEMICAL HAZARD THAT HUMAN FACED IN CURRENT
TIMES.
HEALTH HAZARD- Include bio and CHEMICAL HAZARD- It can harm health
chemical hazard of a person who is exposed to it
BIOLOGICAL HAZARD- Harmful micro • Paints
organisms such as
• Drugs
• Bacteria • Gases
• Viruses • Fuel
• Parasites
• Molds
• Yeast

Human health and well-being are intimately linked to the state of the environment. Good
quality natural environments provide basic needs, in terms of clean air and water, fertile
land for food production, and energy and material inputs for production.
DISCUSS METHODS FOR REDUCING THE EFFECTS
OF HEALTH, BIOLOGICAL, AND CHEMICAL
HAZARDS ON HUMANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
• To lessen the effects of these hazards, there are the following ways that need to be applied:
1.Before eating, wash everything properly, such as raw foods and vegetables.

2.Use natural products or ingredients for pesticides.

3.Less toxic waste and common materials such as paints ,batteries , pesticides, and solvents because
they create toxic waste during manufacture or when these products are thrown out.

4.Avoid cloning of humans and animals. It can increase the risk of increasing allergens ,
uncontrollable population growth , and raise potentially serious health issues for animals and
humans.

5.Maintaining cleanliness and proper hygiene is especially important in processing foods and
working with live animals or animal products such as blood , tissue, and milk.
6.Proper waste disposal will reduce the need to extract resources and lower the potential
for contamination.
7.Disinfection and sterilization of hospital and health-care equipment and tools to ensure
that medical and surgical instruments do not transmit infectious pathogens to patients.
8.Wear of safety equipment to reduce the health-related risk associated with handling
infectious agents, toxins and chemicals.
9.Conducting research and educating people on how to take care of themselves and the
environment .
