Understanding Culture,
Society, and Politics
This module helps you become aware of your role, and
OVERVIEW how you are going to function in accordance with the
culture of your society leading towards nation-building,
and respecting human cultural variation in your
community, country, and the whole world. However, to
have a dynamic society, politics is also needed, for this
affects the life of every individual on how you are going
to behave as a member of the group, so with your
relationship with other people.

Culture
Culture refers to that
complex whole that
includes knowledge,
beliefs, arts, morals,
laws, customs, and any
other capabilities and
habits acquired by man
as a member of society.

Two types of Culture:

1. Material culture – is composed of tangible


things like food, tools, dress, accessories, and
others.
2. Non-material culture – composed of
intangible things such as habits, ideas, religion,
language, and behavior

SOCIAL DIFFERENCES

➢refers to the situation where


people are discriminated
against based on economic
status, social characteristics,
and qualities. These may
include race, ethnicity, gender,
and professions.
Common social differences among people in the world;

1. Gender – refers to the biological characteristics that


distinguish a male from a female
2. Gender Roles -refers to attitudes and behaviors that society
expects a person based on his/her sex
3. Socio-economic class - the high income, the middle income,
and the low-income class
4. Ethnicity - which refers to the ethnic group who have a
common culture, language and history
5. Race – which refers to the group of people who shared
inherited physical characteristics such as skin color, facial
features, and body structure
SOCIAL CHANGE
➢ refers to any significant alteration over
time in behavior patterns and cultural
values and norms. This change is
brought about by modernization and the
impact of globalization results in cultural
change among Filipino people.

The Significance of Culture:

• Makes it possible for a man to adopt and integrate himself to


his environment
• Establish patterns of acceptable social behavior such as good
manners and right conduct
• It conveys and facilitates meaning
• It produces man-made things such as clothing, tools, and others
• It contributes an overall human satisfaction like arts,
recreational activities, etc.
The Significance of Society:

• It is an avenue for economic inter-

anthropology, sociology, and politics:

Anthropology
- is a branch of knowledge that deals with the scientific study of man, his
works, his body, his behavior, and values in time and space (Palispis,
2007)
- from the New Latin word anthropologia (“the study of humanity”)
and shares its ultimate root in Greek, anthrōpos (“human being”),
with a number of other words in English, such as anthropomorphize,
philanthropy, and misanthrope
Political Science
▪ is a systematic study of a state and its government, with the
relationships of men in the community, with relations to groups,
to the state itself, and to other sovereign counties.
▪ a study of the state in the past, present, and future; of political
organization, political processes, and political functions; of
political institutions and political theories
▪ The term `politics‟, is derived from the Greek word `Polis‟, which
means the city-state According to Greek Philosophers, Politics
was a subject that dealt with all the activities and affairs of the
city-state
Sociology

▪is the scientific study of patterned, shared human


behavior, it analysis human interaction which is
essential in understanding man’s cultural make-up
▪The word sociology comes from the suffix "-logy"
which means "study of," derived from Greek, and
the stem "socio-" which is from the Latin word
socius, meaning member, friend, or ally, thus
referring to people in general.
