UNISON WORLD SCHOOL, DEHRADUN

WINTER HOLIDAY ASSIGNMENT, 2022-23

GRADE - IX SUBJECT - Physics
General Instructions:
 Read the questions carefully before attempting.
 Take a printout of this assignment and paste it in the thin notebook.
 Write the answers in neat, legible handwriting in a thin notebook or in filed A4 sheets.
 Attempt all the questions.

1. An object is kept within the focus of a concave mirror, an enlarged image is formed
behind the mirror. Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image and mention the
nature of image formed.
2. Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the path of the reflected ray corresponding to an
incident ray of light parallel to the principal axis of a convex mirror. Mark the angle of
incidence and angle of reflection on it.
3. An object is placed at a distance of 30 cm in front of a convex mirror of focal length 15
cm. Find the image distance. Write four characteristics of the image formed by the
mirror.
4. Why do water pipelines often burst in winters?
5. If the radius of curvature of a spherical mirror is 30cm, calculate its focal length.
6. Why are convex mirrors used as rear view mirrors in automobiles?
7. A plastic ball is released under water. It comes to the surface of the water and doesn’t
sinks in it. Explain the reason.
8. The magnification “m” for a mirror is +1. What does this signify?
9. The diagram shows the main scale and vernier scale of a calliper, which is used to
measure the diameter of a metal ball (sphere). Find the radius of the ball.

10. Find out the acceleration of the graph line AC, given below.

11. Define a physical balance and a beam balance with the help of a clear diagram.
12. Determine the force of gravitational attraction between the earth of mass 6 x 10 24 kg
and a physics student having mass 60-kg, if the student is standing at sea level at a
distance of 6.4 x 106 m from the earth’s centre.
13. State Newton’s second law of motion. Calculate the force required to impart a velocity
of 20 m/s in 5 s to a car at rest. The mass of the car is 1500 kg.
14. A cylindrical shaped object of cross-sectional area 0.0004 m2 and length 0.30 m is
immersed completely in water. Determine
a. Weight of the solid in SI system.
b. Upthrust acting on solid in SI system.
c. Apparent weight of solid in water.
[Take g = 10ms-2; density of water = 1000 kgm-3, density of solid = 1500 kgm-3]
15. A person planned to design an air-bag system in car that can protect the driver in a head-
on collision at a speed of 37.0 m/s. Can you estimate how much time will the air bag
take to inflate to protect the driver? Assume that the car crumples on impact over a
distance of about 2.0 m.
16. On a hot summer day, the water in a swimming pool remains comfortably cool. Explain.
