INTRODUCTION
Level 1 laboratory activity refers to condition where the problem and ways & means are guided
and given to the students. However the answers to the assignment are left to the students to
solve using the group creativity and innovativeness. It is hoped that the activity will slowly
introduce and inculcate independent learning amongst students and prepare them for a much
harder task of open-ended laboratory activities.
In this laboratory activity students will be exposed to the usage of sieving tests to determine
the particle size distribution of soil. Dry sieving was used to determine the size of cohesive less
soil containing sand and gravel only.
OBJECTIVES
• to determine the percentage of different grain sizes contained within a soil
• to determine the distribution of the coarser, larger-sized particles
• to determine the distribution of the finer particles
APPARATUS
• Balance
• Set of sieves (2 mm, 1.18 mm, 0.6 mm, 0.425mm, 0.3 mm, 0.212 mm, 0.15 mm,
0.063mm)
• Cleaning brush
• Mechanical sieve shaker
• Lid and pan
PROCEDURES
1. Soil sample prepared.
2. Dry soil sample weight recorded.
3. Each of sieve cleaned and weighted.
4. The sieves arranged in order with largest opening on top to smallest opening at the
bottom.
5. Sieve stack placed in mechanical shaker and shake for 15 minutes.
6. Stack removed from the shaker.
7. Weight of each sieve recorded with the retained soil.
8. Retained soil in the bottom pan weighed and recorded.

CONCLUSION
We as a group can achieve all the objective of this laboratory. Firstly, we can determine the
percentage of different grain sizes contained within a soil. After that, by using we know how
to use mechanical and sieve analysis to determine the distribution of the larger sized particles
and coarser particles. We also know how to determine the distribution of the finer particles by
using hydrometer method. The possible error that can possible happen is weighing error. So,
we can overcome it by set the weighing scale to zero before taking the reading. After that, the
other error is calculation error because of wrong data and others. So, we can overcome that
error by carefully putting all the data into our calculation and checking all the data after we
calculate it.
