3 phases of english evolution; old english, middle english, and modern english.

~ Old english 500 BC - 1100 AD


~ Middle english 1100 AD - 1500 AD
~ Modern english 1500 AD - 2000 AD

OLD ENGLISH (BEOWULF)


1. CELTS
- before the arrival of the romans in 55 BC, Britain's inhabitants spoke a Celtic
language. not many Celtic words were left in the present day.
2. ROMANS
- the romans arrived and ruled the country for close to 400 years. Even with the
length of the Roman's rules in the britain, there are only about 200 words with
roman origin that are left
in the modern day.

3. GERMANIC TRIBES
- The last of the roman legions left Britain and without the defensive forces the
roman provided, the country was gradually invaded. The arrival of three germanic
tribes started the
english history. the three tribes were the Jutes, The Angles, and The Saxon who
later joined forces to form the Anglo-Saxon.

4. ANGLO-SAXON
- With The Jutes, The Saxon and The Angles joining forces, creating a new germanic
language using their different dialects; now referred to as Anglo-Saxon or Old
English.

5. VIKINGS
- The vikings came and took control for more than 100 years of a najor part of
Scotland. They stayed until the 11th century but during the last years of their
reign they were pushed back
by King Alfred to develop a feeling of national identity.

MIDDLE ENGLISH (CHAUCER)


1. NORMAN CONQUEST - 1066
- in 1066 William the Conqueror invaded Great Britain during the Battle of
Hastings. as a new king took the throne, Anglo-Norman became the dominant language
of the royal goverment.
the inlfuence of french on the english language was clear with french words
replacing english.

2. 100 YEARS WAR - 1300


- many of the british viewed french as the enemy leading to a shift in the
language. english was starting to rise in status with universities such as
cambridge and oxford and is also
starting to be used more in literatures.

3. CHAUCER - 1343 - 1400


- Chaucer had one of the buggest impact on the english language and is most famous
for his creation of the Canterbury Tales. Moat literature the time was still being
written in french,
however Chaucer decided to write in english.

4. ENGLISH IN GOVERMENT - 1362


- This was the first time that english was seen as the language of status and
power.
5. HENRY V - 1419
- Henry V was the first king since Anglo - Saxon times to use english as his main
form written language, solidifying English as the language of power in Great
Britain.

6. GUTENBERG BIBLE - 1455


- Johannes Gutenberg had invented the printing press. The Gutenberg bible was the
first huge text to be printed with this new technology.

MODERN ENGLISH
1. MODERN ENGLISH - 1500
- whe william caxton first introduced the printing press to Britain, he printed
many texts that would help standarized the English language.

2. FIRST BIBLE IN ENGLISH - 1526


- With the printing press being introduced to Britain, William Tyndale's Bible
became the first to be printed in the english language.

3. WILLIAM SHALESPEAR - 1564 -1616


- William Shakespear would be another person to have a massive impact on english
language and it's acceptance as a language of power. Shakespear is given credit by
oxford english
dictionary for the creation of over 1,800 words.

4. FIRST ENGLISH DICTIONARY - 1613


- Robert Crawdely's table alphabeticall, consists of around 3,000 words and their
definitions. this book was meant to help explain new "hard" words to the masses.

5. THE ENGLISH GRAMMAR - 1640


- Ben jonson wrote the english grammar hoping to explain foreigners syntax,
spelling and pronunciation of english.

6. ALPHABET BOOKS - 1815


- it was during this time the alphabet books were written to help children learn
the english alphabet.

7. GRAMMAR FOR CHILDREN - 1824


- people were constantly trying to invent new ways to teach grammar top children
since they would become bored with just learning rule after rule.

8. INVENTION OF COMPUTER - 1946


- The invention of the computer would revolutionize the way that people would write
and spread language.

9. INVENTION OF FACEBOOK - 2004


- facebook had a large impact on language because it was a way for people to
connect with others and exchange words and language from different dialects.
