Andres Bonifacio, through Dr.

Pio Valenzuela, sought Rizal’s opinion and approval in launching an armed

rebellion against the Spanish administration. Rizal staunchly opposed the rebellion saying that the Filipinos
were not yet fully ready for the independence.
Instruction: Write a hand written 500-word essay about your reaction opinion of Rizal’s rejection of the
Katipunan’s intent to stage an armed rebellion. Be guided in grading the essay using the rubric below.

Andres Bonifacio, head of the Katipunan sent his emissary by the name of Dr. Pio Valenzuela to
Dapitan informing Rizal of the Katipunan’s plan to launch a revolution. Rizal objected to Bonifacio’s bold
project the country was not ready, lacked money, armaments, and would be suicidal. Dr. Valenzuela
informed that inevitably break out if the plot would be discovered. Rizal suggested soliciting the support of
the rich and influential people of Manila to strengthen their cause. He recommended Antonio Luna be made
to direct the military operations of the Katipunan citing his knowledge of military science and tactics!
Sensing that the revolutionary leaders were dead set on launching their audacious project, Rizal
instructed Valenzuela that it would be for the best interests of the Katipunan to get first the support of the
rich and influential people of Manila to strengthen their cause. He further suggested that Antonio Luna with
his knowledge of military science and tactics, be made to direct the military operations of the Revolution.
At that point, Rizal was not ready to advocate a bloody revolution. He was hoping that the colonist
will listen to his peaceful clamor for freedom through his writings. It was his good faith & belief that the
Spaniards will listen & provide the Filipino people their freedom & self government as he believed that the
people can do it with his guidance. And he strongly believed the Filipino people will do good with their own
governance. By the time Rizal was a teenager, the Filipinos already had been stirred in discontent before
Rizal even first spoke against the Church (the true goverment of colonial philippines). By the time Bonifacio
joined La Liga Filipina in 1892, Filipinos were already fed up. So many and extreme discontent that he
found other members in the La Liga Filipina as radical as evrn thinking of separation. Rizal was never really
“diplomatic”. In fact, Rizal was a sharp shooter and a swordsman. In Europe, he almost shot or sliced Luna
in a duel had one of their friends nit stopped them. It was Pardo de Tavera I believe. He knew those books
would lead to violence. On the other hand, if there was no Rizal or Del Pilar inciting discontent among the
people, would Bonifacio have an army to begin with? Andres Bonifacio was a member of Rizal’s La Liga
Filipina. Bonifacio simply raised Rizal’s rebellion to the next level, and that is breaking away from Spain and
my means of war.

Rizal was truly a person for his countrymen. He’s a patriot and nationalistic for he never wantedto
see his fellow countrymen being oppressed and being exploited. He’s a man of action. However, I view him
as still an ordinary man in the sense that he had also his flaws when hewas still alive. He is still like us--
human, whose curiosity is sometimes awakened which mightresult to a mistake. Now, I believe that Rizal
was not always thinking of what he can do for his countrymen.
