Diversity Statement

Dr. Mohammad Boshir Ahmed

Being a science-based person, in the world of scientific evolution has allowed me to see real-world
problems in unique ways. While I was a Ph.D. student at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), I
worked as a “Technical Assistant”, where my role was to focus on environmental safety issues and
monitor undergraduate students’ activities at the laboratory. This led me to work with different classes of
students. Hence, I have built an academic career integrating my research and my wide ‐reaching public
service, while engaging with communities, particularly communities of color and other priority
populations. I have spent countless hours advocating for policies.

I am well aware that being a scientist or researcher does not mean just being successful in research. At the
same time, one should be excellent in his/her interactions with the community and the students, in his/her
role to lead the academic society, and in responsibilities to transform the community. To this end, I have
been engaged in several volunteer activities, such as teaching and tutoring high school students (mostly
female students) in Bangladesh and undergraduate students in Australia to attract students’ attention to
science; chemistry, and math, guiding and encouraging students from my undergraduate school, to apply
to graduate school. At UTS, I mentored one Chinese student for his undergraduate research project. I
trained him on building and characterizing for studying and also for research activities leading to a
journal publication. In early 2022, I visited UTS. I found that that student now is a Ph.D. student at UTS.
Hopefully, his research experience will carry him to one of the top graduate schools at UTS.

Diversity, to me, is not just something to be achieved or talked about, or theorized about; it is the source
of life for me. Also, I come to know that “The Australian National University” is committed to increasing
diversity, which is expressed in myriad forms, including race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic status, language, culture, national origin, religious commitments, age, (dis)ability status
and political perspective. Hence, my plans for promoting diversity and inclusion in the context of a
Research and Teaching Professor position include:

Research:
• Publishing the results of the “Creating an Inclusive Classroom” and actively doing research.
• Studying and publishing the effects of study group interventions.

Teaching:
• Employing the teaching methods described above to ensure equity and inclusion in my classrooms.

Service:
• Continuing my involvement with organizations that promote diversity in the STEM field.
• Engaging in community outreach by teaching.
• Helping recruit underrepresented minority students

I have also come to know that “The Australian National University” is committed to working actively to
challenge and respond to bias, harassment, and discrimination. “The Australian National University” is
also committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate based on race,
color, national origin, age, material status, gender expression, disability, religion, height, or veteran status.
“The Australian National University” is committed to pursuing deliberate efforts to ensure that its campus
is a place where differences are welcome, different perspectives are respectfully heard, and where every
individual feels a sense of belonging and inclusion. Looking ahead to my new roles at the University, I
intend to use my training, skills, and position to ensure excellence and increase equity and diversity at my
University and in society. Hence, my ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is solid.
